Mr Trebus R.I.P , I seen a lot of comments on this video , people say Council did the wrong thing , and its was the council fault he died. Lets start from the beginning , Mr Trebus was trapped in the home because he had made tunnel`s in his home , one of the tunnels came down on him and he was trapped for 2 days, it was lucky someone heard him calling for help , question is what would of happened if no one found him , then emergency services report it back to environmental health, When Mike turn up to Mr Trebus house look the way he trying to hold on to a ladder water bottle and walk across all the rubbish , one slip, and it could of put Mr trebus in hospital with head injury , or broken leg or arm, SO I TOTAL AGREE THAT THE COUNCIL DID THE RIGHT THING , IT NOT ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY , THERE THINKING OF HIM , NO WATER NO HEATING NO ELETRIC , then i watch the video of MR TREBUS IN THE CARE HOME , MARIA HIS CARER DID A FANTASTIC JOB , MR TREBUS WAS THE MAN WHO HE SHOULD BE , WHEN I SEE MR TREBUS GETTING OF THE MINI BUS FROM HIS CARER`S HOME TO HIS LUNCH TIME MEAL WHAT A SMILE HE HAD ON HIS FACE, WE LOOKED SO HAPPY , THE CARE HOME MADE HIM SAFE , WARM , SECURITY , AND HIS HEALTH WAS BETTER AND HE LOOKED MORE HAPPY , so at the end of the day the Council did the right thing , as a Carer my self i would of done the same for MR TREBUS taken him out of the home and put him into a care home. watch the last video and see the diffrence A Life of Grime/Edmund Zygfryd Trebus/Eccentric Extraordinaire.
Think I was about 12 when this came out and for some reason I've always remembered Mr Trebus. I couldn't understand why he wanted to live in those conditions but his fighting spirit stuck with me. Turns out I used to drive right past his house on my commute to work for nearly ten years and never knew. Sad to see how much distress it caused him but it really needed doing. Still love him sticking it to the man though haha
Technically he was sticking it to his neighbors! You can’t blame them for not wanting to be surrounded by trash site with rats and vermin everywhere, not to mention the smell.
This was truly heartbreaking especially as Mr Trebus had had such a life and also being in a concentration camp. I felt the police and all the others really tried to help him and I am sure they to felt sad to see it end this way again very sad.
81 year old man climbing scaffolding & trying to dismantle it, this was in 1999, in 2015 the most climbing kids do these days is climb on their bed so they can use IPhone, Ipad & play video games! I am ashamed of my generation! kudos Mr Trebus.
The pathologist who features in this series Vesna Djurovic is highly renowned in her field. Most significantly she was the pathologist in the Sarah Payne case
I feel so sorry for that old guy he was probably suffering from PTSD seeing as he was in the war, he probably feels safe having loads of stuff around him
LIfe Of Grime was great, Mr Trebus what a character and a very brave man, watch,, A Life of Grime/Edmund Zygfryd Trebus/Eccentric Extraordinaire. very interesting story and a roller coaster ride of emotions.
Each of us can relate to him a bit, let's face it. I also used to collect different useless stuff, and felt OK, though. But now I tend to get rid of things I don't need. Once a month I get round to throwing the stuff. I don't want to end up like poor Mr Trebus.
They should send a women to deal with poor Mr. Trebus. One cannot apply logic to an emotional problem (= feeling old, neglected, not being taken seriously ...)
Such people should be provided with medical care. They should not become an occasion for discussions of other people. This is a difficult situation in which the person, his relatives and neighbors found themselves.
RIP Mr Trebus. No one should live like that. Brilliant guy but clearly some mental health issues. I remember a follow up and he was all cleaned up and in a home and was much happier. Can’t believe it was 22 years ago. Anyone know where Mike the council guy is now. He was a nice guy too and so calm.
To be honest, I feel that this video is controversial. On the one hand, I can understand people who were suffering from infestation of rats, but on the other hand, it seemed to me that Mr. Trebus had some mental health problems. Otherwise, why didn't he realise that everything what he was doing led to a health hazard? He needed help.
Late 90s - seem to remember 98/99 - Edmund Trebus died in 2002 - I saw him outside his house on Crouch Hill about a year before he died, poking around some rubbish in the gutter with his walking stick
Its Haringey's councils fault that they would allow matters to get to such a state in the first place. They need to care more about their residents than they do about themselves but we know they spend more time working out their overtime that they do actually working for the people of the nation.
Mr Trebus son is a good friend of mine. Mr Trebus served with the Polish army during the war. Apparently he got reprimanded for crashing his tank during the Italian campaign. He was a tough guy who had lots of gruesome experience. Probably what he did then was the by-product of the war. I can still remember my friend R. Trebus (SON) harsh experience from some of our ex-coworker when BBC released this documentary. It was really awful on his side. His son was the most nicest and intelligent person I've ever met. He really did not deserve the bullying he had from some dickheads ex-coworkers of ours. I think in the end it broke him. I really miss my friend. I hope I will see him again and spend some wonderful chat about anything and everything.
That's a really shitty thing to say Matt. You don't know the situation and from what I understand people with this problem are mentally sound for the most part and are extremely resistant to being helped. Look up Diogenes syndrome and that's one of the defining characteristics.
As per Franticks suggestion- Diogenes syndrome aka as Senile Squalor Syndrome, is a disorder characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, social withdrawal, apathy, compulsive hoarding of garbage or animals, and lack of shame. Sufferers may also display symptoms of catatonia.
but they are trying to help him, living in squalor is not healthy for a old man! so think before you judge people! just before he died, he finally agreed to move out there! :)
The fact this guy is in his 80s and he's luggin' shit about and trash talkin' henched guys on scaffolding is pretty amazing. I don't think he's crazy at all; he's just pissed off.
I remember this as one of those late 90's shows I watched with my parents and brother when I was still at school along with Paddington Green narrated by Todd Carty, Ground Force, Changing rooms, Eastenders when it was still watchable and Grant was still in it, and the Brian Park era of Coronation street with the Battersby's.
Well, He seems like a nice and kind man who had gone through really tough time like war. However, I also can relate to his neighbours. They also want to live their life without health hazard. We need to respect other people. Our rights end when the other ones start.
Good old Mr Terbus! Climbing on to & talking down that scaffolding alone & with seemingly effortless ease. He was not going to let authority get the better of him.
holy shit, i CANNOT believe they fucking arrested him, OMFG watching tem handle him like a criminal made me feel so bad, this is ridiculous, that poor man, this is what will have killed him, we are all equal on this planet, life is supposed to be a special thing and who says we should be controlled by another, we are all human and we share the planet, nobody fucking owns it, this shit pisses me off
I remember when I used to watch this when I was younger, RIP MR Trebus! :(
Love Mr Trebus. Rest in Peace, you fiesty warrior.

@@diarmuidreidy3708 yeah he passed away in 2002 at aged 83.

Very True. He was cared for, and did seem happier.
Thank you, I have been wanting to see this episode for a long time
I still remember him after all these years. Rip
HEY ONE OF THOSE SCAFFOLDERS WAS MY DAD
I always come back to watch this show every now and then. Mr Trebus was a warrior. Needed support but stood his ground for his beliefs.
Trebus fought the allies when he was in the Wehrmacht, was captured and switched sides, what hope did the council have.
