Hi Praveen! I’m an American girl who has been in awe of Indian architecture ever since learning about the Taj Mahal when I was in the 3rd grade. Your videos always inspire me. Even from afar, these temples ignite a visceral sense of spirituality and connection to ancient humans within me. Even though I am not of Indian descent, I feel a sense of pride in these ancient builders. Thanks to your work, I dream of visiting India. I can tell that these ancient builders felt connected to their ancestors just as viewing these temples today makes us feel connected to the ancient builders that carved/erected them. Even if this temple is 1400 years old, it was inspired by much older ideas. Since there is so much continuity in how figures are shown in ancient Indian temples (like how you said the door guards always have fangs), I always wonder what temples or what art these builders looked at to model their own carvings after.

Ancient Indian temples are more beautiful than Taj Mahal frankly. The architectures and sculptures have always wooed me whenever I visited any ancient temple. They still do. Have a wonderful time in India when you visit Her. But before that study or else find a really good guide who will explain everything in details here.

Another fantastic video. And to have Hugh Newman as a guest with you was great. I am looking forward to seeing the temple that rates a 100. I did not know that the structures were carved out of granite. From my understanding of granite is it is one of, if not the hardest stones to cut or sculpt from. And the accoustic properties on the temple is incredible. MR. Mohan you have definitely found another fan of India the History and the many beautiful temples there are beyond words. I'd love to see the golden temple, but my understanding is, we would never be allowed inside that temple. I remember reading about the vaults being opened. One vault they could not open. No, those three compartments belongs to Brahma, Vishnu (Krishna) and Shiv.
And lingams only refers for Shiv, not for Vishnu (Krishna) and Brahma. So, there is not any possibility that there would be three of lingams. Yeah there could be three different statues or something.

    1) The doors too may be meant to be invisible. Invisible doors for invisible (formless) Gods
    2) The dwarapalaka (door keeper) on the left looks like Garuda, the vahana or the carrier of Vishnu, but the right one is undecipherable, may be related to Siva
    3) There is no lingam in one of the Chidambaram shrines (Chidambara Rahasya). So the concept of worshipping formless God predates this temple and lends support to your theory.

nothing was added to it, but the architect could have easily carved out a block and made the three gods and then put in chambers, same could be said about the gates. so if the door and gods were made of blocks cut out of the rock. the inscription could be said true. they could be destroyed by invaders later and if the doors and gods were detachable they could be easily destroyed and removed from the temple without leaving any sign of destruction. the hole in the chambers indicates the statues of gods could be detachble.

Starting construction in the middle, the Mandagapattu temple could be symbolizing man being between heaven and earth or as a place for the Gods to come down to?
Maybe it was more a stage than a temple for people to walk in.
Stairs are practical but maybe obscuring something?
Like false doors to other places in other temples, these doors are useable.
Imagine three monks chanting a different sound at the same time?
Praveen, you need to try to get three people to chant inside.
Simple site that quickly got a little complicated. This was another good one Praveen!
It's crazy to think that negative space building techniques were used in many places in earlier times rather than later.

It is very close to my village and its a monolithic temple as well but has more rock paintings than sculptures. The watchman assigned to this temple demonstrated the reverberations of AUM inside the samathi without even opening his mouth and what really blew my mind was he stepped out side the temple a couple of feets away and was still able to create the vibrations inside the samathi.

      @@NikhileshSurve 🙏 I’m sorry, thank you so much…
I wasn't specific in explaining myself and above all I’m really not an expert (And I’m Italian, sorry if I have a strange English) but just recently approached…
I meant exactly the inscription and to me visually it didn’t seem like any classical alphabet script used for Sanskrit (Deva, Guja, Bangla, Sara etc) even if the Tamil and Grantha script is (Especially was) used for writing Sanskrit texts.
I did a bit of confusion, I just wanted to say that in my opinion I see some Vettelettu alphabet, clearly… Assuming what alphabet it could be…
I thought say Sanskrit was reductive.
      A better explanation.
Probably I would like to see something I’m not ready to see clear, so I appreciate so much your comment and have a discussion about it ‘coz I need to do better and have bigger motivation!

@@NikhileshSurveThanks for your answer! This meant a lot to me!
I’m self taught in many things, so having someone who knows helping me understand and teach me more is like a dream!
Thank you, you’re English is very fine too! (Where are you from?)
No, I’m not using a translator, this is my (Bad) English!
Sometimes I don’t know if I have to be much “spoken English” or grammatically correct!
Yeah I mean Devanagari, Gujarati, Sharada and Bengali. I didn’t mean to sound offensive, they’re diminutive.
My Vettelettu alphabet connection came from the rounded design but I thought was Grantha.
In South India it was used until 6th century AD or a little later to write Sanskrit (But also Dravidian language) and if I’m not wrong Madagapattu is a Pallava Trimurti tribute of early 7th…
Aesthetically speaking the inscription to me seems more like Malayalam script or Tigalari than old Tamil Brahmi script, but I’m doing some visual consideration as a person who notice especially this part and I’m studying by myself.
In this case I'm mostly focused on alphabets and I definitely need more study of languages and language sound (Sorry if sometimes I get confused between alphabet and language) but I think Praaven is Tamil too.

Fantastic treatment to every aspect of the architecture, Praveen.
The nothingness in the temple is symbolic of the unrealistic realm we live in, derived from Advaitha philosophy.
Temples are always above ground level so the vichitra architect would have thought of cutting out from the middle. Indeed a crazy idea!
Another thing worth noticing is there are 3 doors and 3 layers of entrance, typical of Hindu temple sanctum.
What I’m amazed with these ancient builders is that they never intended to name these architecture after themselves. Imagine that in contrast with today where everything is patented, named and watermarked.
    Enjoyed the journey.
