I'd like to thank my parents for introducing me to ELO, not only is this one of my all time top songs, it also got me introduced to Anime and the beautiful work of Hideaki Anno and the absolute master-piece that is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
I bought this album when it came out on vinyl. I was immediately blown away by this song and everything that's going on in it vocally and instrumentally. One of ELO's most underrated songs and one that everyone should check out. I'm a High School band teach and played it for my kids. Ten minutes ago 5 of them said they couldn't stop singing it! Me too...for the last 40 years. :)
I've been listening to classic rock for my whole short life now, but my biggest mistake was only listening to the mainstream hits of the bands I love. Ever since I began listening to and understanding ELO's more obscure and less popular songs and albums, my love for the band and Jeff Lynne has grown beyond the stars.
So many memorable track: Rain Is Falling, Ticket To The Moon, Is This The Way Life's Meant To Be, 21st Century Man, Here Is The News, Sent A Dream, Truly 2095, Light Go Down, Another Heart Breaks. Wait. I think I just listed the entire album.
Right here. I had heard of ELO before that though from an old friend and then heard some more on a plane Journey from Japan to L.A. I did not seek out albums from that point, but I will now.
This song has brought so many people together.... It brings tears to my eyes that so many people young and old can come together in order to appreciate this masterpiece... those that heard it when it first came out and those that found it more recently, we can all jam together. I hope whoever reads this far into the future even after I’ve grown old and passed away can use this song as I and many others have to get through everything that life has to throw at them. You’ve got this! Memento Mori, and live your life to the fullest possibility!
My reason for discovering the band is quite stupid I'll say. It was from hear the mr blue sky among us meme too many times, and deciding to listen to the whole song. Fell in love with the song. Didn't want to taint my love by listening to more of their music. Watched a video where a guy explains the writing of mr blue sky, and in the video he talks about the rest of the concerto for a rainy day. I decided one day to listen to it. Eventually I moved from listening to thr concerto to listening to the whole album. Then, I listened to a new world record. I bought a new world record on vinyl. Then out of the blue. I Got into some of there more popular songs. I got their first album on vinyl. Then listening to them sprouted into a rabbit whole of 1970s rock and disco. I got into the bee gees, klaatu, and even the beatles later albums from the late 1960s. Then, I started listening to the album this song is off of, and it changed my view of elo. I got it on vinyl too, along with sgt pepper and spirits having flown on unrelated notes. I got their greatest hits record, got a cassette of the classics, and started listening to their new stuff. I've even grown to appreciate balance of power. Anyway the point of all this is to show that some one can relatively naturally come to liking such an underrated band. Oh and the stupid amongbus memes weren't entirely the reason. I had heard mr blue sky on the radio a multitude of times, as well as don't bring me down.
ELO was my Dad's generation. I grew up in the 80's & 90's and found them on my own (and claimed them as my favorite band), now my kids listen to them and love them as well. Timelessness can never die.
According to the Rock and Roll Encyclopedia, this album was the start of the major decline in album sales for ELO. Their massive appeal hey-day was over. The foolish general public! The next two albums, Time and Secret Messages were total masterpieces! The masses truly missed out on absolute gems.
I have no idea how people didn't buy this album. Time, in my opinion, is one of the all-time great albums -- there's very few theme albums that work half as well, and even fewer that have _every_ song on them be worth listening to on its own. I can't think of a single song on this album that I wouldn't listen to all the way through to the end.
@@InchonDM the album came out in 1981 when I was in the 8th grade it sure takes me back to junior high and everything a 14 year old boy goes through at that age.10 years later I had a 77 Camaro and l loved playing this tape while I drove my Camaro

Elo's albums are great. unfortunately a Lot of the pop tracks are the ones that get played on the radio. In my opinion the really good tracks get overlooked. For those interested, listen to Elo's third album " On the third day". It's a masterpiece. Love you Jeff!
I agree. They had a peak period in the On The Third Day, Eldorado, Face the Music period, and I kind of lost it with Disco?-Very and Out of the Blue, but I think Time was a late flowering where things came together again. I also quite liked Secret Messages.

It's kind of bittersweet: old fans of ELO back in the day are being reunited with their favorite music through the internet, and the younger generations that would never give their old folks the time of day are picking up the bits and pieces of the 80's through AMVs. the whole album's main theme is the passage of time and nostalgia
It's classic rock, it should make you feel human, we haven't been human for a while, we've lost the human spirit and this brings it back
