  • Tablo's over-the-air DVR boxes have long been the easiest way to record OTA TV. And the new Tablo Quad is just about perfect. It's got FOUR tuners. And instead of an external hard drive, it takes in internal SATA drive. So crisp. So clean. Check it out!!!

    I love my Tablo, I only have the 2 tuner model but that's enough for me. The picture quality is great, still much better than cable. Plus you can use it on all the devices, not just Amazon. Commercial skipping works well and the guide and recording works great. Only thing I need is to invest in an an outside attenna, I get most channels but their are a couple that don't come in and thanks to one being an old school VHF channel I need an old school monster antenna and a professional installer.

    I've considered upgrading to this one, although I already have the Tablo 4, which also has four tuners. One of the nice things about the Tablo is not only being able to record something while watching another channel, it can stream recorded content to two devices while using the four tuners (so you could have 6 streams going at once).

    I own a house in San Francisco, CA and Bend, Oregon. I want to be able to watch my SF over the air TV shows on my 43 inch Samsung TV while in Bend, Oregon. Will this device allow me to do that? I tested the Tablo app (without buying the Tablo) it kept searching my network for a Tablo, which obviously I had not purchased yet so it did not find...

    • @robohead521
      @robohead521 3 года назад

      Yes. You can watch your Tablo from pretty much anywhere with the app on pretty much any device.

    The gold standard for guides and, more importantly, the advanced functions with the guide, is also on the best recorder with the best operating system and that is TiVo, both for OTA, cable TV, and finding what programs to stream. Some pay TV providers pay TiVo licensing fees to incorporate some of those patented functions in their recorders and some providers even offer TiVo recorders for rent. However, dedicated streaming boxes usually beat TiVo’s built-in apps because the apps in those are better designed and kept up to date. And, of course, just like Apple’s premium products, TiVos and its service is expensive until the use of their product is amortized over a long period of use.

    • @Moderndad

      I really do need to try TiVo, I guess, eh?

    Someone help me out. I've just discovered this and the HD Homerun. How is this any different than just running a splitter from the antenna to all the tvs? Does it just provide a guide for $200? Or is there something I'm drastically missing?

    • @robertcoups3918
      @robertcoups3918 5 лет назад

      I trust you have found the answer in the last 5 months, but if not. ....... I tried using coaxial cable and splitters, but there is just too much signal loss. These devices let you connect your antenna coax to them, connect them to your wifi network and broadcast the signal to any device on your network with no loss. I have an HD Quatro for sale if you are interested since I switched to the Tablo Quad DVR to get recording capability.

    • @Embattled5211
      @Embattled5211 4 года назад

      This device has an amp, so that reduces signal loss. It also provides recording and uses a "commercial skip" feature. The ability to watch 4 channels instead of just 2. HDHomerunner also costs more, with $179 for 2 tuner instead of $149 (Both Tablo have transcoders built in).
      Not to mention, the HD Homerun DVR options require you to set up a dedicated PC for the recordings to go to. So unless you already have a HTPC, it's impractical.

    • @robohead521
      @robohead521 3 года назад

      Splitting your antenna to all of your TV's lets you watch TV and nothing else. Using this lets you watch TV on your TV's and also lets you watch TV on your mobile devices (phone, tablet, laptop) through an app even if you are away from home. You can also record your TV channels to watch later and it has a nice TV guide and commercial skipping.

  • @kenjohnson6365
    @kenjohnson6365 5 лет назад +2

    I have long cable runs to get the antenna signal to three TV’s in my house. I’m using a pre-amp at the antenna and a splitter amp in the basement where it splits off. If is switch to a Tablo and put it close to the antenna so it is a short run do you think I will get better signal quality and more channels?

  • @WaywardWaggs

    Do you recommend for full time RVers? We are using our unlimited Verizon Jetpack for Wifi. Sounds like we would have to reprogram every time we move to another location but it wouldn't be terrible. We are looking for DVR options while on the road without getting Dish or Direct TV.

  • @creepygnome
    @creepygnome 5 лет назад +4

    Did you try an a SATA SSD to compare it with the standard HDs at 5400 and 7200 rpms? It would be nice to know if anything is noticably different/better like the transcoding, streaming to 1,2,3, and 4 devices at the same time. Perfemance test and results like this would be great additions when applicable.

    I think the OTA DVR to beat is the Tivo Bolt OTA. I like the Tablo stuff but Tivo has a 4 tuner DVR with 1TB HDD built in sitting on Best Buy shelves right now for less than 250 dollars.

    • @robkonz
      @robkonz 5 лет назад +1

      Problem with that is its a set top box. In my opinion the Tablo is way better because it sits behind the scenes connected to the network and I can watch it on all my TVs in the house.

    • @fantom0369
      @fantom0369 5 лет назад +2

      Bolt is a single TV ota device with the ability to upgrade to more than one but you have to have a TiVO specific device to do that right now. Tivo has said they plan to change that but we have seen nothing released as of yet. Tivo and Tablo are not competing for the same market either. if you have a single TV and don't care about streaming to other devices sure the bolt is a good buy for you but not if you plan to use it on more than one device. besides it is likely sometime after it's release we will see the quad go on sale quite often. get what is right for you but remember something. newer tech always costs more and the Tablo Quad is much newer than the Bolt is

    Hi, I canceled cable a few months ago, and set up AirTV, but they're garbage. Continuous problems. But they do kind of integrate local channels and SlingTV channels, which is what I was after. I don't think Tablo is the answer, is there another system that could achieve this reliably? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    I’m moving into a new condo and have ordered the 2 antennas I plan on putting in the attic along with the needed combiner and powered 4 way splitter. I have not purchased the Tablo yet because I’m not sure ot what kind of reception I’m going to get. If it is good, I plan on buying the Tablo Quad. All that said, my question is should I send the powered splitter back and stream using the Quad, or, should I run coax to all the TVs in the condo and use the Tablo just for the DVR functionality?
    Thank you for any help you could offer.

    • @fantom0369
      @fantom0369 5 лет назад

      you could use an SSD but I would not recommend it if you use the tablo often, SSDs still have a far less read/writes than physical platter hard drives right now. that is changing but it still isnt there yet and on something like the tablo a HDD isn't terribly loud at all. you would have to get really close to it to hear it. you can put the tablo anywhere you want as long as it can connect to your local network and your antenna and watch it wherever you have a device that has tablo on it. the list can be found at their website here www.tablotv.com/apps-compatible-devices/

      I had been using the Tablo app on my Samsung smart TV but recently started using it through the Apple TV app. Apple TV Functionality is better allowing you to pause and rewind live TV streams where you can old play back live TV in the Samsung app.

      It's even better than that. There is a 30 second skip when you watch via a web browser, and the remote has a fast-forward button that displays snapshots of the video above the progress bar. But, there is also automatic commercial skipping for Roku and other playback devices - no action needed on your part! Have a look on Tablo's website for more details.

Also, Alexa integration is important to our family...looks like the recast will play well with Alexa.

    I am considering purchasing a Tablo Quad to replace my Tivo Bolt (which died prematurely) primarily based on this and some other reviews and articles. I am a bit concerned that no one is selling the Tablo Quad other than the Tablo store itself. Best Buy has posted a notice saying the Tablo Quad is no longer available.

      DaveInTrinity , hey Dave. Yeah I love our Tablo Quad. It’s probably not as slick as our TiVo was but the streaming from devices works way better. It has commercial skip which mostly works great.
      I did think I would save a few bucks with the Tablo but then they started charging for the commercial skip feature, I think it’s an extra twenty bucks a year.

I would think this would generate a lot of talk in forums, but it almost feels dead in the water or it is so good that no one has any complaints . I only found a few youtube videos and what's on the Tablo website itself. And, no one sells it except Tablotv.com and that worries me.
      Finally, how are the Tablo tuners? My Tivo couldn't pick up about 3 channels and subs that my TV's own tuner had no problem receiving. I suspect it's the signal loss within the 4-tuner splitter. Wondering if the Tablo tuners are as good as a TV's tuner. Thanks again for your input. It really helps.

      Shyam Devadas yeah I’d say that’s an argument for keeping basic cable if it’s still offered in your area, if they can’t live without C-Span and the other cable channels. A lot of people realize that there’s plenty OTA in their area that they don’t really miss the few cable only channels and those few channels aren’t worth $50+ per month. But everyone has their own priorities and desires. To each their own! One thing you could try is just buy a basic antenna and hook it up to one of their TVs and see if they are okay with it. Then you can suggest investing in a large attic or roof antenna.

      Sounds like the throughput on your local network is acting as a bottleneck. Try turning off the setting called 'Fast Live TV startup'. You'll get a bit more buffer at when loading a channel, but it'll help avoid pausing during playback. Option B is reducing the Live TV quality which will send less data through your network.

It looks like in your video it's much quicker than that, but who would know for sure because I just don't trust any of these paid reviews that don't specifically mention this and just gloss over it with statements like "it's slow just because of what's going on inside, mmmkay?"

      That’s a very strange take. Most cable companies will charge about $20/mo for two TVs on DVR, plus a monthly fee to operate it. That’s $240 a year just for renting the hardware. A 1TB 2.5” HD will run $50, so $250 for Quad with 1TB drive is essentially the same cost of renting the hardware for one year from the cable company. In addition, you own the recordings on Tablo, but lose them when you cancel your Charter/Comcast/Directv service. The monthly fee for their DVR service is usually between $10and $20/mo, depending upon the number of TVs connected to the DVR, so the small fee for Tablo guide access is still much less. We paid for the “lifetime” fee and that amortized out many, many months ago.
      I’ve used the “old” 4-tuner model and it has been a rock, this has been for the last 3+ years. A 1TB external drive (WD Passport) provides more storage than we can use.
      If you prefer to keep your DVR with your cable or satellite company, that’s your call, but your cost analysts doesn’t square with the real world costs at all. Tablo is a solid, dependable product who can save a family a lot of $$$ over time.
