@TheDemouchetsREACT yes, we put any food that might drip from the bottom in cups as @CJJ2201 mentioned for spillage purposes.
They really didn’t explain what a Hotteok is in the video but they are delicious! A Hotteok is a yeast risen sweet bread filled with cinnamon sugar and nuts (if you are experiencing a sweet version). When they fry the dough in that little bit of oil, it gets a nice crispy exterior. They press it flat which allows the mixture in the middle to get hot and fully melted. If you have a chance to get a fresh one, eat it! 😅
Yeah the sugar might seem weird in toast but its kinda like a doughnut in that sense. This version they had in the video is the most basic og version but there are lots of variations that include bacon, ham, hash brown, patties, etc. The 2 things that might seem a bit weird but is very common is Sugar & cabbage in the toast.
The reason its served in cups is to prevent spilling but also these are street food items so youre usually walking around eating

I think the only way I'll ever get to have hotteok is if I go to the effort of making them myself. I'm, uh, unlikely to do that, but I know that Maangchi has recipes for both a sweet version and a version stuffed with veggies and noodles.
I’ve made the Maangchi Hotteok recipe and it is great. You can also sometimes find Hotteok in the frozen section of International markets that can be heated in an oven or air fryer. I think the freshly made one was better but as you said you have to put more effort into making a fresh one.
I think it would be good for you folks to visit Korea someday.
