    Hehe, I'm a little late to the game for this video, but I have a few things to share, from an old salt. The device in question is an air idle control stepper motor. ISCs actually predate fuel injection in American cars, they were standardized with TBI (throttle body injection) systems. If I recall, I saw some fitted as an idle bypass (on the baseplate) with carbureted systems. They are a true stepper motor. Note that the device has four electrical terminals.
    In the 80s, I had a cool device, an ISC test module. We would plug this into the stepper, and I could manually operate the motor open and closed, it would advance or retreat into the housing.
    Why is this important? If you have the stepper sitting unmounted, and you turn on the key, after a second or two, that spring loaded pintle will zing across the room! The computer operates the stepper motor until it is seated against the throttle body's seating bore. The computer will then retreat or retract the pintle a few steps in preparation for starting! High idle. If unmounted, it keeps on advancing the pintle until the internal screw runs out of thread, and the internal spring will fly for freedom!
    This process varies depending on the manufacturer of the engine control unit. I have one in my 2002 Aprilia Futura. Yes, no choke, no idle issues, dual throttle bodies, fuel injection. On a motorcycle, no less.
    Today, I installed a new timing belt on a Jeep, with the 2.4, for my neighbors. The belt had failed catastrophically. Well, on restart, no idle control! Camshaft timing is correct, I just set it. Prior to finalizing the install, I temporarily installed the new belt, old tensioner and rollers, to do a quick compression test. All was fantastic. Today, I fitted a new water pump, cleaned the timing covers and the aluminum bracket for the alternator and power steering, and started her up. Smooth, but not chooching at idle, exactly the same sound as in this video. I had already pulled the ISC stepper, no fault codes, but holding the throttle plate open a few degrees, all was perfect.
    Thought I'd have some fun. "Come over here and check out this motorcycle. It has the same idle system." Turned on the key, then off. I did not start it. "Hear that sound?" What she could hear was the stepper whirring, stopping, then whirring again.
    What is happening on that one, it has a Sagem ECU, is the stepper closes, the ECU senses this, then it opens the ISC for the next start. On the Jeep? Absolute silence. Simple fix. The stepper is dead on the Jeep. I might have killed it, being the last one to touch it. Mechanic's cooties, I explained. When the timing belt died, they tried repeatedly to restart it, and there were really nasty fumes and pops coming from the intake snorkel. This pressure was hammering the ISC and the bore was nasty with fresh carbon. I sprayed Berryman's B12 through the bore to clear it on reassembly, and commented that this may have an unintended consequence, if I loosen carbon in that bore, the ISC can jam. Yes, it did.
    With that manual tool I had decades ago, I could remove the pintle and clean it properly. Today, you can buy a handful of ISCs for what it costs.

    Sounds exactly like the issue I've been trying to diagnose. Thank you for the great vid!

    This may have come too late, but at least now maybe my mechanic can get things right. Just paid over $800 (that we shouldn't have had to spend) for a new AC compressor. Car is still idling rough, nearly stalling, and still no AC. What you describe sounds like where my problem is. Thank you for this!

      @@Voltzaps It was never fully fixed, and so many issues kept cropping up that I finally got rid of the car.

    I’m having the same issue on my 2009 PT Cruiser, I thought it was the A/C low pressure switch which I replaced but it’s still rough idling and the ac shuts off. I figured it was the idle air control since reading the repair manual. The part is inexpensive on Amazon, I’m going to replace asap.

    My sisters car is running rough at idle and dies at times while in idle in gear or in park. when driving up to speed under load it runs fine. has codes P0103,P0340,P0300. I was told it does not have a maf sensor??? does not show one available at autozone either..

    • @bessemer-tech5579
      @bessemer-tech5579 4 года назад

      Chrysler??The generic codes are 103 maf or vaf ( volume air flow)high voltage. check wiring or alternator over charging,the sensor is most common. 340 is generally cam sensor circuit problem or sensor, 300 is" random "missfire. I would start with basics, clear codes see which code presents first. Any of those can cause a rough idle, miss fire would be noticed under load also. If the missfire can eventually be specific to a cylinder, example, po 301-302 303-304..
      .that can cause a lot of other codes.good luck

    Alredy spent in a new fan , a new low pressure swicht and I want to be sore before if I have to bay one.

      Sorry sir, been out of town. If it's an internal electrical issue with the solenoid, cleaning won't help.

    My 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan seems to run fine at idle with minor rpm
    drops. My main issue is when the rpms drop around 800- 900 going between
    25-40mph at a steady pace slight uphill or on level road. Could replacing the Idle Control Valve help this also? maybe changing spark plugs and or injector cleaner too?

    I have a 2015 Dodge Dart SXT 2.4 that has a rough idle and when i stop at a stop sign/light sometimes, my rpms drop down to and below 500 nearly shutting off. Thought it was a vaccuum leak but it wasnt. Sometimes i smell antifreeze pretty strongly from the outside of the vehicle but not losing any coolant. AC/Heat work fine however when i turn it off after it has been off for a while, the fan hesitates for a good 30-45 seconds before coming on. Any ideas?

    • @bessemer-tech5579
      @bessemer-tech5579 4 года назад

      That is a much more sophisticated vehicle. I would start with a thorough computer diagnostic test.the parts store freebie test will not be sufficient to test all modules. May just need idle re- learn procedure. The coolant smell is concerning, may not be connected to idle issue.

    I have a rough low idle but runs smooth off idle. Seems to lack a little power though. Would this make it detonate?

    • @bessemer-tech5579
      @bessemer-tech5579 5 лет назад

      It only controls idle speed through all load conditions.. not acceleration. If no codes are showing,it may be difficult. Cam sensor usually controls ign. timing sync., But detonation isn't very common,as computer usually changes things to avoid damage.could possibly be missfire under load? good luck thanks
