- Blue Crabs, in this video we'll be crabbing in the Tomoka Basin area, using handlines, ring traps and box style traps. We'll be crabbing along the road and off a bridge. The crabbing was good with a lot of crabs but not a lot of large Blue Crabs, the ones we kept were full of meat. It was a nice day and we had a great time. Wings are crazy now. A dozen Perdue wings were $17+. Back in the late ‘80s, Monday night football you’d get $0.15 wings and $1.00 Bud longnecks.
Those days are gone. Back in New York we would buy monster slices of delicious pizza for 45 cents each during the mid 70's. Today that same slice will cost you $5
Right, legs are the least expensive around here.
I love when Joyce says it’s a keeper.
Joyce thinks they're all keepers lol. Thanks again for Watching
This TEXAS LADY LOVE'S WATCHING Y'ALL CATCH COOK AND EAT ..THANK YOU SO MUCH 🇨🇱
Thanks for Watching Charlene, we love Texas
Why do you guys hurt my stomach like that 🤣🤣🤣!!! First you go out and have fun, then you cook these wonderful meals. Maybe one day a tv network will pick you guys up. But as for now, your all ours.😄
That's good enough for us. Thanks a lot for Watching our videos
The snow will be flying Sunday and Monday and I will be missing Florida all the more. Thanks for the entertaining videos I really enjoy them.
John, I remember those days when I lived in New Jersey
Back in the 80s I paid about 10¢ a pound for wings and necks for baiting my leech traps but later started using fish heads or cut up crappies which I could catch a bucket full for free at a secret little lake in Minnesota in less than a hour. I could then go about another 1/4 mile and put them directly into my leech traps. Win win 👍
We use the carcasses from the fish we catch a lot but we sometimes run out. Thanks again for Watching
You guys have to much fun and the reward after is soooo delicious 🦀Aloha uncle Sam n aunty Joyce 🌺🤙🌺
You're right, hope things are okay in Hawaii
Glad to see you guys again. Love watching you guys so much. This is a great hobby and great for the stomach. LOL😀
Thanks Debbie, your right about it being a great hobby
What a great idea to pour in a good salsa for a tomatoey crab broth! And so simple, I love that.
Lucia, those crabs were great, we had them 2 days in a row. Thanks again for Watching
Love these two
Thanks William
Nice lil catch Sam and Joyce! Another recipe to try yay 😘😘😘
Thanks Alice
Hope your getting this. Its late but I just found you yesterday. We have binge watched all y’all’s videos. We are so trying to retire and begin the life. Y’all make it look so fun. Your ol’girl pulling pot is something. I promise you mine will not. But it still looks fun. Bless y’all. Give all us old peeps the want toooo
We really appreciate you watching. We do have a lot of fun and it makes us feel young even though we're both 76.
You all are the best, for you do stay busy and that is for sure. I can not pass by and not watch you both, for the both are the best thing since slice bread. Old Master Gunnery SGT USMC.
We try to keep busy SGT it helps us feel young
Hey hey, most of all enjoy the beautiful day & scenery and enjoy each other
You're right Deloris
Fun & good food. Nothing better❤️
You're right Toni
I can’t get enough of y’all crabbing. It makes me want to drive north to your area so much, since we don’t have many down here by Fort Lauderdale. And all of those little baby crabs aren’t doing any good for dinner right now, but they sure will make a whole mess of keepers by the fall or so!
Hey Steve, it's some good crabbing around the Tarpon River near Andrew's Ave and Davie road I hear.
Steve, that's what we were talking about those small crabs, there's a lot of them
Another nice recipe. I missed this one dome how. Always a great great video and recipe y’all’s ✨✌️💜👍😋
Thanks Lisa
Great seeing you guys again!!! Keep up the good "crab-in":)
Thanks Mike
Sam, cut a 11 inch piece of 1/2 inch pvc, and a 8 inch piece of pool noodle.
Insert pvc thru hole in noodle. It wlll be a tight fit. Now you have something to tie your nets to that floats. You can quickly wind the line up in figure eights around the pvc ends. You can take your nets on the water to test new spots quickly to find where the crabs are.
Never had salsa crabs, Joyce is pushing the outer limits with that one. Always a pleasure to watch your videos, and also to see crabbing done in the Winter months in Florida.
Thanks for the tip, the crabs and salsa were great, we had them 2 nights in a row.
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors I had something similar called Chili crab, an asian dish. I could almost endure that long plane ride back to Singapore to eat it again.
Great video guys, sure good to see all those little ones, looks like great crabbing in the future! Tasty looking plate of crabs and fried rice Joyce! Be happy, have fun!
The crabs turned out great so did the rice Thanks again for Watching our videos
You’re such a cool couple. God bless you
Thanks for the nice Comment and Thanks for Watching our videos
Nice outing, but the traffic makes me nervous. Glad you're safe. Definitely better crabbing than sitting at home. Thanks for sharing your fun & yum with us.
I have been doing roadside crabbing for 40 years. If you stay in the area around your vehicle you should be fine.
You have to be careful, just like Rob said when you're not pulling your traps stay by your vehicle. It's not a place for young kids.
i think i would rather have your Florida ' cold ' instead of the Chicago ' cold '......you really came up with some nice crabs....good imagination Ms. Joyce, for making a side dishes to go along with the crab, on its journey to the center of your stomach. Thanks to both of you👋🦀
You're right about that, you can have that Chicago cold lol.
I’m pretty sure that second spot is the first place I went crabbing with my family growing up! Thanks for the videos!
It probably was, it's a popular spot. Thanks again for Watching
Another great video. I like the ones where you crab from the shore, and the cooking at the end is the perfect finish. I never knew there was so many ways to prepare crab. Tomoka Basin! I'll be there next week! Weather forecast is perfect. Hope I can catch a few blue claws.
You should do good, keep trying different places until you find some.
That’s awesome good for you two living life to the fullest!!! I’m almost jelly, but no happy for you guys.
Live it up!!!!
Thanks Jeff
Great video guys always look forward to seeing a new video each week. I like how you crab all winter in Florida.
It's a lot harder to find big ones in the winter but it's still fun.
The crab looked great.
Thanks
So funny you sound in the background all the waves and it's like you're fishing in a still pond
Oh fun crabbing. Have fun you two. ♥️🦀
Thanks Diane
I love y'alls videos! My husband doesn't watch utube but when he hears y'all talking he wants me to turn up the sound and here he comes over to watch your video with me lol. I like that you had fun catching the small crabs as well as the big ones, just having a good time together ❤
Thanks Denise and tell your husband we said hello.
Another great video! Thank You Sam & Joyce
Thanks a lot for Watching
Wonderful job . Nice video. Good Bless you both and keep you both safe
Thanks Sandra we're glad you enjoyed the video
I'm here watching. Yes wings are really high.
In our area necks are more expensive than legs.
Nice...love you guys
Thanks for Watching our videos
The salsa looks really good those were some little crabs I would need two dozen just to get full 😊😊.Love the video Sam and Joyce as always please stay safe🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕🦀🦀🦀
We went from catching 8 inch crabs to trying to get 5 inch crabs, I hope the big ones come back in the spring.
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors Hopefully they do more meat😀😀
That looks delicious. Good job guys. Love your videos.
Thanks again
you eat such a healthy diet and you have such fun together cheers from loki and me Australia
We really have a lot of fun together, Always nice hearing from you in Australia
Mrs Joyce I’ve been wondering how a shrimp and crab with elbow noodles and tomatoes would taste together it would be a form of goulash I guess. I enjoyed y’all’s video very much thank you ❤
We'll have to try it. Thanks again for Watching
Enjoyed the video, you two.
Thanks Blake
We always used chicken necks that used to be cheap. However, I heard the comment in your video that they're more expensive than chicken legs -- all I can say is wow.
It's true in our area legs are cheaper than necks and necks are hard to find. Thanks for Watching
Started fishing as a hobby with our youngest. We catch more blue crabs than fish so we are getting into crabbing. 😊
Great idea, you can fish while crabbing, we do that a lot.
Love your videos! As a teenager my Mom would send me to the butcher shop to get chicken necks and backs. I asked for them and the butcher gave them to me for free because he said he threw them away anyway. We caught lots of crabs😄 We used the box traps with 4 doors that opened, never saw the basket ones you use. Anyway, thanks for another great video and I love the way Sam always let you try everything before he even eats, it's so cute. Love you guys!
Diane, nothing is free any more is it. I used to use the same type of box traps when I was a kid, I miss the old days. Thanks for Watching our videos
It’s fun to crab off the side of the road. You gotta be careful though when I was a kid, a trailer and boat came unhitched from a truck and hit the wall about 10 feet from us. Lol good video!!
Kelly
You're right, it seems that the more traffic the better the crabbing. We're careful as we can be on a road like that. Thanks again for Watching
Looked delicious!
Thanks Troy
Great day of 🦀
Thanks Kenneth ok day for winter
Hi Sam & Joyce, Good morning to you. Wow this video came up after 4am this morning!! Looks like was cold there yesterday. It's 42 degrees here in New Orleans this morning, but l was up on youtube just surfing the net & found you. I'm so glad you got enough crabs for dinner!! I haven't tried Joyce's Salsa Crabs yet & good thing cause now l can take her fried rice reciepe too. Ha Ha. Ok my friends I'll see you on your next trip to grab up some seafood. Thanks for the video. 🌴🌹 🦀🦀
My mistake I scheduled it for am instead of pm and Thanks for Watching
Hey Sam. You should keep a few of those smaller ones to do some redfish fishing. They love those smaller crabs. I usually brake them in half.
Nice day out...
Tight lines.....
Ed we sometimes keep them but it's all catch and release now at Oak Hill where we go.
Real,Reel Living.
Rusty Barnacle Jimmy With Green Belly To Ya!!!
Thanks for Watching John
Sam and Joyce, I tried a shrimp and corn chowder from the grocery store this week. Legal Seafood brand. Red bell pepper and corn gave it a sweetness, and chunks of shrimp were delicious. The 😢potato chunks made it hearty. It would be just as good with crab instead. I hope you might make one for us sometime 😊.
We'll try it Lucia
Enjoyed,want to go crabbing
Thanks Eva, crabbing is a lot of fun and they're good eating
Love what you guys do. Q: is it better to discard the bait, or to feed what's in the waters? For instance in Crappie fishing if you had "Live" minnows left over at the end of the day you would leave them on the banks never add it to the lake. It hurts future bites.
We usually dump it in the water, it's such a large area I don't think it matters there. Thanks for Watching
At least your willing to try different flavor sauces, can't get my family to even try.
We try anything, even cooking crabs in some crazy way instead of just steaming them. Thanks again for Watching
Catching one I missed.
Thanks a lot for Watching
Nice
Thanks
Good morning from Central Alabama. This is the first time I've seen one of your videos, and I absolutely loved it. I noticed you both have a bit of a southern accent. So I would guess you guys are in Florida (my home away from home).
I look forward to watching more awesome videos. Until then take care and God bless. ☺️
We're glad you found us Jade, your right we're from Florida and Thanks a lot for Watching
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors The pleasure is all mine. ☺️
I just bought the cheap cotton nets now wishing I had the metal ones.
Do you weight the nets?
What is the yellow on the pull strings?
Nice to see u guys again, l lost my phone😘
Glad you got it back so you can Watch our videos Mayra lol. Nice hearing from you
Where did you guys purchase those crab traps? I usually only see the cloth ones.
Everything looks delish as always. Can you do a video of making your fried rice? Thank You
We'll do it with a fishing video. Thanks again for Watching
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors Thank you so much 😊
Hi Sam and Joyce,
What about your secret handline spot where the really big crabs are? Is that spot not good during the winter time? A good sign to see a lot of juvenile crabs around, next year will be plentiful with big ones
The crabs left the secret spot I hope they come back in the spring
Awesome. I have a couple of questions. I actually live in New Zealand and it says crabs are everywhere throughout NZ. However I find it difficult to catch them.
So i guess
In order to catch some crabs,
I have to find some spots where there are abundant crabs such as estuaries, mud flats, sandy beaches etc.
Also using the right tool is critical. Square type of crab pot, ring type, collapsible one, light one etc.
What do you think the most effective one for crabbing based on your experience over 50 years?
Do you prefer daytime to nighttime?
River is better than sea?
Cloudy is better than sunny?
Looking forward to hearing from you
God bless your family
If you have a boat and if it's legal where you are, the easiest way is to set the square type commercial traps and leave them out for two days. For crabbing from shore or a pier just a plain handline and a net with a fish carcass for bait works best to find crabs. The ring style traps also work well. The main thing is to keep trying new spots and don't give up. Yesterday we went to 5 spots before we found any crabs, They're not always there. Thanks a lot for Watching our videos.
Also we do most of our crabbing during the day.
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors thanks for your prompt reply. I don't have a boat unfortunately. All i do is just cast my collapsible crab pot off the shore about 5 - 10 meters using a bait. If lucky, there's one or two crabs trapped. Yes you are right. Finding a spot is the key to success. I know where to go, but it takes at least 2 hours by car to get decent amount of crabs. Here in NZ, there's no size limit for crabs, only matters are to the number up to 50 crabs per active fisher. I think i may try with chicken neck in daytime, with 1.5 m depth of water. Every time i cast land based (without dipping my legs into water) from the rocks or bridge
99% fail because of casting distance. I feel confident to throw a light crab pot over 20 m as i used to play baseball as non professional outfielder few years back, (recorded about 70 m direct throw from centre fielder to 3rd basement back in 2006), so im thinking of buying that light crab pot, but again my wife says don't blame the tools. And my neighbor says just buy crabs from the supermarket, why bother driving faraway wasting petrol etc. Lol
Scratching for numbers & size. Still...a day out having fun & catching dinner is worth it. Thanx for posting. 4/0 vid again folks.
Right, we just like the outdoors. Thanks again for Watching
Hello Sam where did you get the metal collapsible ring traps. Mine are old and rotten I can't find them anywhere?
I got some at Dick's Sporting Goods and Amazon the nylon mesh ring traps came from Wayne Lee's in Pascagoula Mississippi. Thanks again for Watching our videos
I didn't catch any crabs when I went to Tomeka Basin, next time I'm gonna try the side of the road
We catch the most there but it's so noisy and dangerous but that's where the crabs seem to be. Thanks again for Watching
Just had lunch on the river by the bridge back west few miles of where we shad fish, just a heads up saw the biggest school of shad flipping and sunshine striking i think I've ever seen. The river was solid strikes just ahead of this front today, we were just having lunch so no boat, no rods. Let me know how you guys do.
We'll be going later this week we're in Mississippi now thanks again for the tip, I'll let you know.
Yall be careful sitting on the side of the road. I love your videos by the way.
We're as careful as we can be, we stay on the wide side of the road by the truck. Thanks for Watching our videos
🦀🦀🦀 Ft. Pierce
Thanks Bob
Any interest on those crab 🦀 spike extensions? We can make any crab legal
🙂.
Where is this bridge?
In the Tomoka area
were you on old dixie highway
Yes
So, are these traps and box traps legal considering the new regulations?
If you mean the new regulations for turtle excluders, that's just for the larger traps we leave out for a day or two, not the hand traps. Thanks for Watching
@The Old Couple Outdoors awesome, yeah I was referring to that. Do you label your traps? Or is it not needed since you're always with them?
OMG guys! I understand why your truck has to be on the other side, but....why aren't your chairs and cooler on the water side? Scares me to death that you are crossing that crazy road so much!! 😲 Please be safe!! 🙏👍😏
The side the truck is on is a lot wider, we're patient crossing the road but it's not for young kids. Thanks again for Watching
I know the price of fuel is going up again. Also the price of eggs and everything else. I wonder if you bought the chicken necks inland if they would be cheaper? I catch them like that for Drum bait.
You should have had a second sea food cooking channel.
They're perfect Redfish bait but it's catch and release only where we fish the flats. Thanks again for Watching our videos
Well even if you don’t catch anything today you guys are well exceeded the amount of crabs that could be eaten by any two people You guys are down there where you can basically eat free off the fat of the land off the side of the road well up North we pay an arm and a leg and a A limb just to be able to eat 1 crab leg much less a whole crab
You're right, we do eat a lot of seafood. Thanks again for Watching
Chicken or any other land animal is not allowed where I am, we can only use bait that came from the sea.
We use the carcasses from the fish we catch.when we go fishing but if you don't fish chicken is the favorite bait around here. Thanks for the information it's very interesting. Always nice to hear from Australia
I BUY THHHE DICOUNTED CHICKEN OR TURKEY LEGS BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO EXPIRE TALK TO A BUTCHER IN YOUR LOCAL SUPERMARKET AND HE WILL TELL YOU WHEN MUCH CHEAPER YOU TWO ARE MAKING ME THINKING ABOUT ORDERING 2 DOZEN WE CANT GET NOTHING IN NEWYORK AFTER OCTOBER CRABS UP HERE PROBABLY COME FROM DOWN SOUTH EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY MARYLAND I THINK THEY ARE FULL OF CRAP VERY EXPENSIVE GOD BLESS YOU BOTH
We also buy expired chicken when we can get it. Thanks again for Watching
I always use chicken backs very cheap around here
Dennis, we use backs also but we always find good deals on legs.
Not sure if it’s worth being run over folks
We're careful, after totaling our truck when someone came in our lane and pushed us off the road we realized you can't predict what's going to happen, there is a picture on the community page. Thanks a lot for Watching
@@TheOldCoupleOutdoors glad your safe, I'd miss these video's, you have a following
They love chicken one of my secrets I season chicken raw before putting on line old bay Adobe and chili powder they love it season 2hrs before going you will be surprised I increase catch this way works well in ct waters
We'll have to try it, thanks for the tip
Ct can't use pots but seasoned chicken brings them in only bridge open baskets and hand lines
That works
Aren't we the early bird!!!
Hehe... Don't you know the early bird catches the worm. 😁
Sorry, I scheduled AM instead of PM I'm getting old lol. Thanks for Watching so early
