I remember as a student, I one night got home after some drinking and decided to fire up the x-box. I heard some rummaging outside and went to check, and found a hedgehog covered in ticks wandering trough the garden. I took it inside, put it in a cardboard box with a towel, grabbed the tweezers from my pocket knife and pulled out some vodka. I bare-handedly removed the ticks by rubbing some vodka on em with a paper towel, and then carefully twisting them off with the tweezers. Like how we used to do with my dog. Took me about an hour at 3.00AM in the morning. Put the hedgehog back where I found her after. One of the proudest moments in my life.

Great video! Just so you know, I studied Lyme disease and ticks at university. It is unlikely you would be able to contract lymes disease from touching a tick. Lymes disease is only ever transferred to humans via the blood. Hence it can only really be passed to you if the tick is latched on to you. Also, the tick would need to have been latched on for a minimum of 24hours before there is a chance you have contracted. The tick would also have to be latched on to you during its nymph phase.. so those big fully grown adults pretty safe.. just very gross 🤣. And finally even if you have a nymph phase tick attached to your skin for over 24 hours, you may still not get the disease because they don't all carry it.
That being said, the risks of lymes disease is very real and good to warn people. At the size in the video you would think they are very easy to spot on your own skin. I can tell you from personal experience.. they are TINY when they first bite, like smaller than a flea, so its very hard to spot them. They grow quick tho so usually you spot them within a few days.. this unfortunatly can be enough time to contracts. I know two people that have got contracted lymes disease from a tick, so it can happen. I have had 3 tick bites myself in the last two years. -luckly I spotted them quickly (because I know to check) and removed before I had any reason to worry! Good to do a full body check after every walk of you live in the country xx

    • @kathygilmartin6897
      @kathygilmartin6897 2 года назад

So much of what you commented is untrue.
A tick can regurgitate the contents of its stomach immediately after attaching to you.
The gentleman in the video is correct ,you should never touch a tick, these little B sterds are toxic !.
I have also studied Lyme (not lymes) disease for almost 10 yrs.
I have Lyme disease and multiple Co infections which I have passed in utero to my 2 sons.
Lyme disease is also sexually transmitted.
Much of the information online or what's taught is utter rubbish as anyone living with Lyme will tell you.
It will not be cured with 6 weeks of Doxycycline either.
Most LLMD's ( Lyme Literate medical Drs) will treat with a combo of 2 or more antibiotics.
My boys had 3 1/2 years straight no break of a 3 antibiotic combo, starting when they were 5 and 7yrs old.
      I had 5 1/2yrs straight no break of a 3 antibiotic combo.
Are we fixed ? Hell the fk no !, you can only hope to suppress Lyme once you are chronic.
There is no cure for Lyme, living with a weakened immune system also makes you more susceptible to any bug, germ that's doing the rounds.
Sometimes Lyme can do damage to internal organs that can not be reversed.
If you are in the medical field please join a Lyme group so you can learn some facts from the people themselves that are living with Lyme disease, if you become Lyme literate your waiting room will be jam packed.x.

My understanding is that you have to be BITTEN by an infected tick in order to get the bacteria into your system. If caught early, antibiotics will cure. I believe you when you say you checked her 3 weeks prior, if she was infested much longer she would have lost any will to fight but I saw none of that. poor girl was so infested..

How fantastic of you to provide this service to these little guys!! 👍🏽 I once saved a hedgehog that was all balled up and sitting in the middle of traffic so I took my work trousers out of my bag, bundled him up and took him to the nearest grassy canal. Don't see hedgehogs at all where I am so felt quite special to find him, let alone save him.

I rescued a hedgehog that was very underweight and was found in day time. Its been doing very well. That had a lot of ticks around his ears. I couldn't really get them off as the hedgehog was very nervous and would roll up but strangely after a few weeks on feeding it cat food biscuits the ticks disappeared.

I think for the ones in the spines, you might just want to use the tweezers and grab them by the proboscis. Getting that big tool in between the spines looks uncomfortable. Thanks for doing this.
