This is a near-perfect encapsulation of Back Issues: Recognizable character, cool moments, dumb moments, weird usage of art (the covers), melodrama ripe for ridicule, great background info about the making of the book... just wonderful.
I'm so exhausted today, I literally thought this was a Batman / Venom crossover. I was waiting for 17 minutes for Eddie Brock to show up. I didn't even realize you guys were talking about the drug until you showed the cover for the book. Goddamn, I am so out of it right now.
There is a drug called Venom that Bane, the Batman villain uses, and I rember the first time hearing about this story I thought for a good while Bats was going to get on that. So same but slightly different bout lol
When they're talking near the end about how they wish Batman would have failed again or something of the like, I think the best thing that could have happened was we see Batman in a tank of water with a boulder in it, and he pulls something out of his belt and it's that thermite Sal talked about near the beginning. Just have Bats melt the rock at the end of the book, "Next time I'll be ready" kinda of deal.
It's Over 9000 Productions You and Mustache are welcome to chill up here with me in Canada if shit hits the fan. Should ComicPOP fall we shall tell tales of the daring trio (and occasionally tiffany)
At first i was super excited, i thought you guys were doing another venom book! while i'm disappointed that i wont be seeing my favorite character on todays episode, seeing a new installment of back issues in my sub box is still the highlight of my week, keep it up sal & gang!
Oh I loved this! I never realized Venom was a Denny O'Neil invention! He's such an interesting creator. Crazy man. Great intentions, but some of his stuff does not age well. Maybe not his fault, as times were weird. (My Ward is a Junkie makes me want to punch Green Arrow in the teeth... SO SO much. Poor Roy. Though it took reading about three times to decipher the period-appropriate slang dialogue to figure out what the heck was going on.) I've got a love/hate thing with him, like some sort of old uncle who occasionally says weird things I disagree with. He participated in the Telephone to Kill Jason Todd Robin event, MY HEART! But it honestly did great things for the growth of the Batman and Batfamily mythos. Took away Wonder Woman's powers and put her in sexy clothes! But I get what he was going for, and besides I own that "The New Wonder Woman is Here" issue as my only vintage comic... sooo.... :cough: all's well that ends well...? Love you, you crazy old man! You're the best! And you, too, ComicPop dudes!
I should've posted my thoughts since I read this comic many months ago, but it's such a striking story. It's difficult to wotness Batman acting like a drug addict, constantly needing fixes from a psychotic doctor to become a "more effective" crimefighter just for failing to save a little girl from drowning. At the same time, I thought the antagonists were too two-dimensional. You have a belligerent general who mind controls his soldiers and doesn't care for his own son's life and you have the doctor who wants to create superstrong rapists for shits and giggles.
StanWilks Yeah, but then it's gonna be easier for people to figure out who Batman is. They'd be all like "Look at his beard! That's look very Bruce Wayne-ish."
Sal I'd like to thank you and the rest of the ComicPOP team, I look forward to Back Issues every week and it is one of my favorite shows tv or online. You guys and gals are great.
Great episode of back issues. Batman: Venom is one of my favorite Batman stories, because it deals with Bruce's limitations and getting passed his addiction. My paperback copy has that awesome cover you guys mentioned but its missing some parts like the part with Superman turning to Sissy Porter.
Maybe my favorite Non- Canon OR. Canon. Batman/Alfred exchange: *Batman:* _"Alfred! I failed! *Alfred:* _"Well yeah man, that kind of shit happens all the time... If you didn't think you'd ever fail, then your are more arrogant than I ever imagined..."_ *Batman:* _"I don't have to listen to this!"_ *Alfred:* _"Why don't you change your clothes and fuckin'take a bath...?"_ *Batman:* _"Aaaaahhhhhrrrrg!"_ Thank you Sal! 😂😂😂😂
also as a colombian i can honestly say that there is actually not that many palm trees, palm trees exist mostly in the coast but most of the country is hills , mountains, meadows, jungles and rainforest but all beautiful ;)
I would love a story where batman is trying to go into a construction zone and a construction worker tells Batman hey you can't go in there it's dangerous and then Batman is like screw you and then Batman fights the construction worker and loses and the construction worker is like hey I should be Batman.
My copy of Venom actually has the cover you prefer...the one from issue two. It also just has solid white helvetica font saying "Batman Venom" and then the creators. The cover of your trade is really weird.
I swear I thought exactly the same thing as Tiffany when I started this video. I was like,"DId I miss a Venom/Batman crossover at some point.". Great discussion, as always.
Superhero comics and PSA messages. These always turn out well. I think there's a spider-man comic out there where he comes to my hometown up here in Manitoba.
If I remember correctly, Batman's beard didn't actually grow that long in one month. I thought he decided he needed more time, and stayed in the Batcave for a few more months.
Just checked my copy of #18 and you're absolutely right. That makes the issue even better. Not sure why I thought he was there longer; maybe just because that amount of hair growth is absurd for a month. By the way, thanks for replying on a 2 month old video! I'm a new subscriber here and I love that you guys continue the discussion in the comments section, even on older videos.
Michael Mann did the same thing with Heat lol, L.A. Takedown was the first one but it was a TV movie with a limited budget and only half the story Mann wanted to tell, and 10 years later a producer said how much he loved LA Takedown, and Mann was like you've only seen half the film and gave Mann the budget he wanted
LOL, commenting on a six year old video... Re: directors redoing the same movie multiple times w different casts etc. this actually happens, great example would be Howard Hawks basically rebooting Rio Bravo twice. Hawks' biggest fan ever, John Carpenter, rebooted his own homage to Rio Bravo, Assault On Precinct 13, as Ghosts of Mars. It's a great story frame, what can you say. Artists redoing the same pieces multiple times are actually fairly common in all fields. Anyway, love your recaps, read a bunch of stuff I'd skipped lately because of them.
Oh and, LOL: after Waterworld failed, somebody really did have the great idea of putting him in basically the same 300 million dollar postapocalyptic epic, only setting and details tweaked. That movie is called The Postman. It also bombed.
Fantastic show guys! I had some pretty good laughs from this one. Any chance for Batman the Cult, Batman The Black Mirror, or one of my personal favorites Batman Gothic? Again great show!
Didn't Michael Mann do that with Heat too..? Can't remember the name of the previous film or actors, though. Also, I think they do call the drug Venom in Arkham Asylum..?
SPOILER: You forgot to mention what I think is the most controversial event in this book: Batman does kill people. Two people, in fact. After repelling the first shark attack and untying Alfred from the poles, Batman knocks over a raft with two guys on it for the sharks to eat them, thus letting Alfred and him scape. That's completely out of character and, I think, an unforgivable flaw in an otherwise decent book.
This is a near-perfect encapsulation of Back Issues: Recognizable character, cool moments, dumb moments, weird usage of art (the covers), melodrama ripe for ridicule, great background info about the making of the book... just wonderful.
Batman needed a suuper cheesy line at the end, something like "the only fix I need is Justice"
Chill That would have been puuurrrrrfect.
The only line I’m trying to get is the straight and narrow
LMAOOO underrated
I'm so exhausted today, I literally thought this was a Batman / Venom crossover. I was waiting for 17 minutes for Eddie Brock to show up. I didn't even realize you guys were talking about the drug until you showed the cover for the book. Goddamn, I am so out of it right now.
Dylan Barrick don't feel bad I thought the same thing. my brain just said "oh, it's another marvel/dc crossover, right?" LOL
joe mcnoe lmao
There is a drug called Venom that Bane, the Batman villain uses, and I rember the first time hearing about this story I thought for a good while Bats was going to get on that. So same but slightly different bout lol
I thought it was Eddy Brock and Bruce Wayne going to the chiropractor for their back issues
Haha "Is this where he says I don't have to kill you, but I don't have to save you either?" That's a classic Back Issues line now Ben 😂
THWOOOM
*inserts Waterworld poster*
my new favorite moment from this show
"Im NOT gunna take your dick pills"
HHAHA I listen to this at work in a quiet office, just randomly started cracking up
When they're talking near the end about how they wish Batman would have failed again or something of the like, I think the best thing that could have happened was we see Batman in a tank of water with a boulder in it, and he pulls something out of his belt and it's that thermite Sal talked about near the beginning. [2008s The Dark Knight, Alternate Take]
THUG: What's the big difference between you and me, huh?!
BATMAN: I'm not taking penis pills.
Back Issues uploaded. ComicPOP gang is still here. You guys are still here. Looks like the world isn't over after all.
I think they're close enough to the border that the fallout damage might not have reached them anyways.
In the middle of building my boat guys.
It's Over 9000 Productions
You and Mustache are welcome to chill up here with me in Canada if shit hits the fan. Should ComicPOP fall we shall tell tales of the daring trio (and occasionally tiffany)
Grievousish
The epic of Comicpop shall be told down through the ages by the bards Rob and Joel, becoming ever more fantastical and physical.
Don't forget Danielle guys!!
At first i was super excited, i thought you guys were doing another venom book! while i'm disappointed that i wont be seeing my favorite character on todays episode, seeing a new installment of back issues in my sub box is still the highlight of my week, keep it up sal & gang!
+Dükkan It's always possible!
Dükkan thank god it's not a venom book. That would mean it would of been another terrible crossover.
Dükkan I feel the same way
Soooo, the word "Batman" (and the logo) somehow did NOT give away that this was not, in fact, a Venom book? To MULTIPLE people? Got it
Ive been binge watching back issues all week
Oh I loved this! I never realized Venom was a Denny O'Neil invention! He's such an interesting creator. Crazy man. Great intentions, but some of his stuff does not age well. I think he also suggested that Jason gets AIDS when DC was planning to make a story about AIDS.

I need more of Bruce Wayne donning the facial hair.
StanWilks Yeah, but then it's gonna be easier for people to figure out who Batman is. They'd be all like "Look at his beard! That's look very Bruce Wayne-ish."
Ethan seems to know a lot about drug dealers... Getting chemical with Ethan?
BREAKING ETHAN!!!!!!
Getting high with Ethan?
Denton Films Is there something Ethan isn't telling us about.
My Chemical Ethan
a breaking bad parody with ethan as walter and ben as jesse
Holy Bat-Beard!

I love how long they talk about that one guy. This is why I love this channel
I think this is my favorite batman story.
also as a colombian i can honestly say that there is actually not that many palm trees, palm trees exist mostly in the coast but most of the country is hills , mountains, meadows, jungles and rainforest but all beautiful ;)
there is also a lot of cold regions because of the mountains
the fact my birthday this year fell on new back issues day, is one of the reasons why its been such a good birthday for me :D
I would love a story where batman is trying to go into a construction zone and a construction worker tells Batman hey you can't go in there it's dangerous and then Batman is like screw you and then Batman fights the construction worker and loses and the construction worker is like hey I should be Batman.
Nobody would do that
That can only happen if its earth one batman
It happened once in Earth 616
@@trebot9292266 Not to Batman.
@@mitchmac1235 yeah that's... that's the joke.
My copy of Venom actually has the cover you prefer...the one from issue two. It also just has solid white helvetica font saying "Batman Venom" and then the creators. The cover of your trade is really weird.
28:38 so fucking funny Sal pretending to pull out drawings from his pocket sent me into a laughing fit for a while lol
I was Hoping for President Lex, but
Maybe that's a little too much on the nose...
*slow clap*
joe mcnoe That's like that line from God in Futurama:
"You were doing very well until everyone died."
Does Batman eats people in this comic?...No wait...
Soooo when is the Holy Terror Back Issues coming out? And I'm not talking about the Batman: Holy Terror!
0:26 This is your batman on drugs
i would like ethan and Sal discussing the sewer sistem :) (you could call it random chats with ethan and Sal or stll not getting physical with ethan )
I half expected a crisis (*cough* future's end *cough*), although this is Batman having a mid-life crisis
Been hoping you'd do this story for a while, THANKS!
'Alfred, the bad man punted Baxter.'
The more I stare at Ethan, the more I see Martin Shkreli
Kei Kurono Dude, no.
Kei I used to think you were cool as a kid too.
Zachary Goodrich Cooler than Kenshiro?
Realer than Kenshiro.
I swear I thought exactly the same thing as Tiffany when I started this video. I was like,"DId I miss a Venom/Batman crossover at some point.". Great discussion, as always.
As cheesy as this book is, it was the first comics I ever purchased, so this brings back good memories. Thanks Sal!
Superhero comics and PSA messages. These always turn out well. I think there's a spider-man comic out there where he comes to my hometown up here in Manitoba.
Just finished the book, instantly one of my favourites staight away. Thanks for talking it through.
First The Nostalgia Critic, and now a new comic pop vid
perfect. damn. timing! great vid, guys.
HvnlyDaze I know right?
What is a Nostalgia Critic?
If I remember correctly, Batman's beard didn't actually grow that long in one month. I thought he decided he needed more time, and stayed in the Batcave for a few more months.
Nope, just the full month.
I like how I get my notification after I'm already watching the episode lol.
31:36 was hilarious

Forget Mad Max, he’s old news- let’s introduce: “Aquatic Arthur!”, and Wild Wayne!”… both set in depressing dystopian futures 😂
27:37 lmao 😂
58:45 the story from the past
At first I thought this was a batman vs marvel's venom book the I actually realised what it was
Thomas Agar lol me too
In Tiffany's defense, that was my immediate reaction as well. "They crossed over?..."
This is the first back issues that I've read before you've done it as a video.
After seeing Batman very curious to see how they take this inspiration for the next movie.
More Batman. MOAR.
LOL, commenting on a six year old video...

Great episode as usual. You guys are the best!
"something here can kill a shark?fuck that shit"
no, im just gonna hurt you for a while- the passage that sticks with me from this comic
Fantastic show guys! I had some pretty good laughs from this one. Any chance for Batman the Cult, Batman The Black Mirror, or one of my personal favorites Batman Gothic? Again great show!
I hope we get pieces of this is Battinsons' second outing.
I read this book at my local library a few years ago.
I think the cover was that awesome one, but I can't quite remember.
I love Batman Venom so much, such a great book and story which means a lot to my list of comics I own
Comicatorian an comicsexplained needs to plug y'all more . FACTS!!!
This intro is HILARIOUS relating to Zack Snyder's work
You guys should do a Back Issues on Nextwave.
My cat loves the intro music.
i didnt read this story, but excellent oportunity to know about it right now
Is that grizzlyshark framed? If so nice
Nathan Berg I was starring at it behind Ethan all along
So, President Lex next week?
The general reminds me of the same general from justice league unlimited. The general that is with Waller.
One question: what the heck is GRIZZLY SHARK,sea of fear????
ok so I was looking for a DC marvel cross over with bat man with the venom symbiote and he can control it because he's a good guy at heart
i laugh a lot with you guys, you Just get so excited that make the same face as batman in the front art jajajaja very funny review
...so there IS such a thing as shark repellent?
I thought the same thing. *stats adapting zombie apocalypse plans to include great white bat shark repellent. patent pending* lol
thank you guys
24:00
Silly old Batman comics, some are a laugh and few are masterpieces!
Didn't Michael Mann do that with Heat too..? Can't remember the name of the previous film or actors, though.
Also, I think they do call the drug Venom in Arkham Asylum..?
there's a grizzilyshark comic in the background...i don't know what that is but i am very enticed to find out
LOL - @37:15
“Muh pills!”
Can you do futures end for one of the back issues. It sucks but it could be fun making fun of it
Great episode !!
Reviewing MADMAN is something you could consider? I really wanna hear your thoughts on it, especially Vol 1, thanks! :D
I know of this book, but when you guys mentioned it on the Weekly pull i thought it was a Marvel Venom book too lol
The RED Samurai same
Can you guys do another X-Men back issues soon? New x-men, perhaps? Maybe endsong?
NICE ONE
Thank u for making the video
wood in water becomes hard as stone because of deprivation of air

batman also fights a shark in joker's five way revenge.
It just hit me...what are the other comics that this story first appeared in? I think you mentioned 2, but Im not sure if you said the titles..
What Sal means is a story with the same premise, which is essentially an anti-drug/steroid comic featuring Batman.
ohhh....thanks! I thought he meant it was altered and used previously in say for example, Spider-Man and some other hero.
ahhhhh.....duh. now I get it lol, thanks!
What are the other two Denny O'Neil stories called?
does denny o neil have a thing for bare chested batman he also wrote that ras al gul story
I got this back then just for the cool covers, in hindsigh it was a good investment...
Venom is a hell of a drug.
Grizzlyshark vs Seabear?
