Not allowing someone to get a credit card or access to their own income is a glaring example of coercive control. I personally don’t like the excuse people give for being in debt by saying they are not good with numbers. The financial math is actually very simple. The problem is that most of the time people spend more than what they have. This is no judgment whatsoever, but I think it’s important for people to understand that financial mismanagement is not a math problem, it’s a personal disposition and should be addressed as such. To me, taking personal responsibility is crucial in dealing with finances.

It’s fine to make judgments. We do it all time, and this is what helps us be better people. If no judgments were made, their would be no need for the Law. The father in law while being horrifically burned attempted to save his wife and dogs. For anyone interested the Hamilton Spec has extensive reporting in their newspaper of the trial and evidence. The Tim Horton connection is irrelevant to the actual background of this crime. While I understand Grande's need of a tag line to this case it is misleading and frankly somewhat belittling and offensive in making light of a horrific crime.

If Richard Taylor is reading this in prison I say it’s best you stay there indefinitely and shame on you. Thank you Dr Grande for this in-depth look into this tragic crime.

The nature of the crime looks like something straight of GamerFromMars' Internet Mysterious as it's crazy Richard loved Tim Horton's so much, his willing to commit arson to get those precious Timbits. This is reminding me so much of the Kenneth Lamar Noid case (one you should cover, Dr Grande) where a man thought he was being stalked because the Domino's Pizza mascot had his name to where he held an Albany, Georgia Domino's at gunpoint for the perceived stalking.

Dr. Grande, why are you doing ad-reads for scammers (in my opinion). The reason I say they're scammers is that Scotland doesn't allow you to sell tiny plots of land legally. You don't actually receive title to a plot of land. Instead, you just get a piece of paper that says you own a plot, but you don't really own anything. You couldn't, for example, buy a bunch of these plots, put them all together and build something on it, because you never actually get legal title to any land.

I wonder if Richard was ever taught the value of a dollar. When I was a child, my father took me to the bank and I opened up my first savings account and I put six dollars in that account (this was in the 1960's). There's a lot of insecurity today with reality TV and social media. Some people don't feel okay unless they're living like these reality "stars." In an early episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey (yes, NJ), one of the "housewives" went shopping with her daughter and when she went to pay, she opened her wallet and pulled out a bunch of hundred dollar bills. I can imagine some people thinking that was something to aspire to be.

This story will help remind me to cook more and eat out less. Even cheaper restraunts like Tim Hortons can sure add up when you rely on them often, although this doesn't usually lead to murder. Another thing that strikes me in this case, although it is not uncommon, is how some people can be so successful in their work life and earning capabilities, and still have no ability to budget. As a creative person who never had a high income,, I assume society rewards people who are more left brained and analytical. It is puzzling that they are not more analytical about spending, and I wonder how those people's brains work.

I don’t know why I have a hard time understanding how shame can underlie vulnerable narcissism. I guess it’s just a lack of insight and complete denial. Good morning, Dr. Grande! I think you summed it up rather nicely. Richard Taylor was a spend-o-holic and many of us know people like that. Combined, he and his wife made a better than average income, yet he was in a perpetual state of debt.
While everybody "liked" him, he was suspected of stealing at work, which I think suggests that people were wary of him there.
I doubt that his wife was as oblivious to their precarious financial situation as she has been made out to be. I think she simply felt that the finances were HIS problem and thoroughly enjoyed living the high life.
Richard killed his mother and stepfather for the money, simply because he was in such a deep hole that he couldn't get out of it without losing face. Even his mother seemed wary of loaning him more money ($500 was a drop in the bucket of what he owed) and she confided her concerns with her other son about his uncontrolled spending.
I concede that stress over his debt and unchecked spending drove him to commit murder, but what he realized from the insurance and inheritance he quickly went through and was in just as big a hole as before, probably an even bigger one with the fees on unpaid credit cards continuing to accrue.
I also concur that he probably thought he wouldn't be a suspect but, and I believe Sherlock Holmes was attributed with this quote, the police probably said, "Bring in the usual suspects."
    Richard had the best motive.
Even his stepfather, while dying from his burns, said repeatedly that Richard had done it. His wife probably made him aware of how deep a financial hole Rochard had gotten himself into and that a sudden infusion of quick cash would be his only salvation.
So why would his limp and his cane prevent him from setting fire to his mother's house? You've pointed out that the police had reasons not to believe that he was so severely injured by the fall at his mother's house to preclude him from doing that.
As for Richard being eligible for parole after a few decades, I hope that his surviving brother takes care.
And Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Dr. Grande!
