Worlds' greatest 'creepy stalker' song - which so many people keep hearing as some sort of romantic song! D'oh!!!
It wasn't until the third or fourth time I heard it that I actually listened, and the creepy stalker was obvious. I think too many people don't really hear the lyrics...
Well, English Is not my first language, and I discovered its real meaning yesterday. I am traumatized.😦.
This little masterpiece (like almost all their songs, IMHO) was the 1st and main single extracted from "Sincronicity" 1983 LP and it won so many prizes around the world that year... Was it just the dualism between the sinister text and the perceived "love song ballade" atmosphere? Because, IMHO we can't simply ascribe it to the fact that many don't speak/understand english or they are not listening to the words.
Anyway, this part is pasted from Songfacts: "In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity"

Very few people can write a song about a stalker and make it a banger. 😆 It takes skill.
When asked why he looks so angry in the video Sting himself said, "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite."
Likewise very few guys could have pulled off "Don't Stand so Close to Me" which starts out describing the common problem young or attractive teachers have where they become the focus of a teenage crush, but then gets pretty dark. All the time sounding cheerful.
Those songs end up feeling transgressive rather than creepy. Like you're in on a naughty secret that the song is much darker than it seems at first. Very few artists could pull that off. It's not a matter of "the times" either, those songs were dark at the time.
