The amount of work you put into your B-roll and establishing shots is incredible. To run ahead and put the camera and then head back to capture you walking or driving would add so much time to the trip but it’s so worth it for us the viewers. Thank you!
Nigel, I thought I knew all this so wasn’t expecting to learn much but as it was you I clicked on the video anyway. Thank you for a very entertaining 20 minutes while I have my Sunday breakfast and I did learn more. It must have taken you ages to scout and plan all this out. Plus of course the editing. The combination of your drone videos, explanations and photos are top drawer. It doesn’t get better than this. Oh wait, . . . the next video!
Depends what you are going to do with the photo. I doubt you would enlarge a photo with a blurred foreground. I imagine if you are blowing up the photo to huge professional sizes, like I imagine he is doing, this is probably the technique to use?
The other day you were asking, if we were missing you. Well, YES! And with this step back it is easy to see the quality of your videos with fresh eyes again. Stunning.
Nigel, your explanation and examples helped me learn the PhotoPills DOF app better than any one else explaining it. You are always teaching and I thank you for it.
I have been following you for a bit to learn all I can about photography, but what I would use in my Drone shots. NOW, I have a new Canon EOS 2000D (yes an APS-C sensor) and have come back to learn all I can!! Thank you so much for all that have done and explained, it has helped me immensely!!
I am mainly a flower photographer (amateur), and want to do some landscapes. I live in Arizona which is very photogenic no matter where I look. This video is exactly what I need. So far, focus has been hit or miss. Now I can't wait to get out there trying to use what you've taught us here. Thank you!
I used hyperfocal focussing all the time back in film days, carrying a sheet of paper around with all my lens settings and checking for every shot. It was impossible to focus stack 35mm slides! But I thought it was a lost art since the advent of digital and photoshop focus stacking. Glad you showed this. It's always better to get it right in camera.
Great video. My holly trinity of landscape photographers are Nigel Danson, James Popsys and Henry Turner. I've been following their channels for years and aside from great insights and advices, their videos are certainly the best and most entertaining lessons on photography one could find on RUclips.
Thanks Nigel. I've been struggling with focus for a while. Knew it all in the past, but my M.E. causes memory issues. This was a great reminder and clear guide as to what to do. I had pbotopills already but on a tablet that never comes with me. Now on my phone and will be used when filming my next vlog.
So good to see you each Sunday morning. It's so nice to enjoy all the stunning photos and videos first thing in the morning. Always learn so much each week. Thank you for all your efforts and sharing your talents!
Didn't get a good sleep last night so my brain won't focus. Have to watch this a few times I think. Footage is mind-blowing looking forward to the next instalment. Thank you for bringing this to ordinary people like me, I learn so much.
Nigel you are exceptional in your office in front of your computer but you were made to be out there somewhere! What an incredible video! The kind of video that can be watch multiple times and looking so forward to what’s coming! 👏👏👏✊
Everything wonderful about that video : the footage, the soundtrack, the pictures, the landscapes...and those little teasers for future weeks! Very much looking forward to seeing all of it!
I don't know why, but that apple crunch was the most satisfying thing I have heard all day. Killer video as always man! Those cinematic scenes were just stunning!
Ha ha - I liked that too! It was my 2nd attempt as first crunch didn’t work (hope that didn’t spoil the illusion!) I b-rolled Iceland to death with my drone.
Shocking realisation in this video. I was always thinking that you had your wide-angle lens horizontal for these amazing shots with a foreground/background sharp landscape. When I saw you focussing down toward the flowers, it just made sense immediately but I'd never seen it done before. Thank you...that was such an aha moment. I swear you have just changed my photography for the better.
I always learn something watching your videos. Your explanation demystified the theory and practical use of hyperfocal distance. Adding screenshots from PhotoPills when composing your beautiful photos was a great way to show how to determine the appropriate focus distance.
Great video Nigel, amazing scenery and some great practical scenarios to demonstrate all the technical focusing stuff using Pills. I find the hyperfocal table in Pills to be very useful as a quick reference - just navigate to find where the x and y axis meet, and you can pick AR to show where the minimum focus point is. Takes out all the jargon and complexity. Look forward to your next production - keep up the great work!
It’s fantastic how you observe the location and combine this with you knowledge withour being overwhelmed by the fantastic views! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the stunning images!
I really like this video because you've captured some amazing photos on a cloudy day, whereas some photographers may just walk away and think there's nothing to photograph because it's so cloudy out.
Talk about perfect timing Nigel, will be in Iceland 5 weeks today with my daughter doing a whistle stop tour in a camper van. Route is planned to take in as much as possible. This series is going to be both invaluable and beautiful 🌋🏔
Reminds me why PhotoPills is the only app I've ever parted with hard earned cash before. Really useful tutorial Nigel and I'm delighted to see Iceland again. Amazing country!
Simply stunning. Wow blown away. Thank you so much Nigel as always or sharing your truly beautiful images and your knowledge, you have no idea how much it’s appreciated
This video is an absolute triumph! The final shot of the waterfall was truly captivating! Can’t wait for the next few videos from the Land of Ice and Fire!
Hey Nigel, catching up on a few old videos and found this one to be excellent, a detailed explanation of getting focussing right, or when to focus stack. Brilliant! No wonder you have so many subscribers, every video is so informative and helpful. Keep up the great work!
A bit elementary but always good to be reminded of the key issues. It is interesting that you double. I generally just go beyond the HFD a bit. I think the doubling is an easier algorithm to remember and I'll change to it. Again always good to go back to the basics every now and again.
I really enjoyed this video. I just recently upgraded my equipment and am excited to take it out and try the techniques here. Thanks for a great channel.
Phantastic places, and excellent pictures. Thanks Nigel! I am familiar on how to use the concepts you explain, but you are capable to explain them in a crystal clear manner.
Hi Nigel, love the video. If you use the augmented reality part of the Photopills DOF page, it will project a hyperfocal line on your scene, taking away much of the guess work when deciding where to focus.
Nigel, What an amazing video lesson! You presented your material in simple terms and had great visual aids. I really liked when we were looking through the camera as you adjusted the zoom and incorporated graphics showing the focus points. I am still a new follower and I think this is your best video that I have seen. Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial, Nigel. I constantly have issues with focusing and focus stack more than I probably need to. The issue for me is when I am trying to use my 10 stop ND filters to slow down the water in the waterfall, while also including a small subject in the near distance. I have the PhotoPills app, but did not understand the fact that doubling the HFD would help a lot. I’m going to try this next time. Thanks again.
Great video and information! Looking forward to more in the Iceland series. BTW- I use the EasyMeasure-Camera Ruler app and the AR functionality of my iPhone to get approximate distances to objects (near and far). Also allows me to save images of the measurements overlay on the pic for my location research… helpful info combined with the embedded GPS location info from the phone.
Good morning Nigel, fantastic to see you again! Many scenes in Iceland are just extremely stunning to everyone. I am certain many and many of us here are always looking forward to every next video from you. Would you consider making a "behind the scene" kind of video about how do you make a day out shooting video/vlog maybe someday? Share a bit about your thoughts and thinking process of how you do videography. And as always thanks so much for the awesome video on Sunday!
Really enjoyed this one, as an enthusiastic amateur, I think the tendency is to always focus on the main subject rather than taking into account the whole image.
timely Nigel as I am wrapping up a trip in the high mountains of southwestern Colorado and I struggled with DOF constantly. Took a number of focus stacking shots as a result.
Great to see this tutorial from you as I prepare for my first photography expedition to Iceland in September. You’re giving me a good feel for the landscape. Thanks!
For digital cameras, Full Frame, APS-C and Micro this is the best App I have ever used. Specifically designed for Digital (read his reasoning regarding digital vs hyperfocal distance charts) I have used it since its inception and in my opinion it never fails to deliver great (sharp) results even in the most demanding close to far subjects. Of course we are all limited to our lens/camera combination: OptimumCS-Pro.
Thanks Nigel for a concise review on focusing. Your explanations and spending time detailing the examples, especially with the use of PhotoPills app, was very helpful. Great video work on this episode looking forward to the next.
Brilliant! Thanks for the lesson, something I will definitely look at now. I think this knowledge is something I’ve been lacking. Can’t wait to see the next videos!!
If this were the mid 90’s Nigel would have been the host of a travel-nature-photography show on the Discovery channel. His videos are a great mix of well edited, fun, great locations, and very informative.
In the past in film time, the resolution was quite poor compared to today and then the existing DOF was measurable with an index on the lens, depending on the aperture. But with today's cameras, which have such a high resolution, I want to say that there is no DOF in that sense, either it is in the focus plane or it is out of focus and an index says nothing, as it is completely subjective what is in focus. Now you zoom in 100-200%, which you never did with old negatives or slides.
Great location to explain a technical subject and hold attention. Beautiful. Oh for the days when a lens had DOF scales on them. Another aspect to consider is sensor resolution and therefore the ability to see what is acceptably sharp. I remember when we went from standard def to HD video in tv production, that we would see more focus errors on shots where before the lack of resolution hid them.
I have been eagerly waiting to see what you bring back from Iceland Nigel - certainly not disappointed! Looking forward the the next videos, and calendar perhaps??
Thanks Nigel for logic concerning hyperfocus distances, I like your approach. I'm looking forward to your coming videos, especially the volcano and that incredible sunset you showed a briefly near the end of this video. I'm going to Iceland in August for 8 days of shooting so your videos are very timely.
Epic footage! Looking very much forward to seeing the rest of it and fun to see the locations I've been under other conditions. You had much more snow than me :)
Nigel, I’m a subscriber to your channel, and have watched many of your videos but haven’t yet commented (until now). Just wanted to say that your content is amazing, and your explanations are very informative. I’ve recently upgraded my camera to the Nikon Z6ii and (based on your review) purchased the z24-200 f/4 lens (I’m still a beginner…). Keep up the great work, Maestro 👍🏼👏
Shooting landscapes with manual vintage lenses makes this easy for you: the lens will have convenient markings showing you the hyperfocal range for each aperture setting.
@@NigelDanson on a full frame mirrorless they aren’t too far off the mark. I use them as an initial starting point and check/adjust using the magnifier
Nigel, this is an exceptional video. Everything extremely well explained and, as a bonus, a video littered with amazing photos and drone footage. I must admit that for someone with a fear for heights, your balancing acts on the rims of the volcanos did raise my blood pressure a bit.
Excellent video Nigel, I've often struggled with getting my photos with acceptable sharpness and focus. Not going to suggest I understood the whole principles you've explained, and I'm not about to start carrying around a tape measure with me, but this really helped me to begin to understand relationships. Looking forward to next edition, those scenes of Iceland look awesome!
Nigel thanks for posting this video. Here is my take on DOF: I am somewhat annoyed at the camera manufacturers, that with all the pseudo-features they load up cameras these days (pixel-shift, etc.) that they haven't fully addressed determining DOF. I mean how hard could it be? (Focus on the closest object, press a button, then focus at the furthest subject, press a button, and the camera displays in the EVF, what f-stop should be used to achieve this. This is not a technological insurmountable problem for Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc al. I am thinking more shooters would find this feature more useful than pixel-shifting, or even the current obsession-du-jour, animal eye focus (speaking as a landscape photographer). Of course we can use smartphone apps to dial in DOF, but in some ways there is a disconnect with this method...we are striving for no-compromise PIN-SHARP focus, yet we must ESTIMATE the distances of the closest and furthest subjects...why must we ESTIMATE to get EXACTING focus (sorry for the caps...RUclips has no underlining of text). Besides that, using a smartphone during the process of creating an image is just one more fiddly bit do deal with, especially during fleeting light of Golden Hour. If everything were in-camera, it would much easier. Gee, I had less issues with maximizing DOF when I shot film...as they used to engrave the DOF on the lens barrels (got to love those Nikon AIS lenses). By the way, in the first part of the video...what is that device you have in the Z7 hotshoe? Beautiful scenery in this video, and I am looking forward to upcoming videos from Iceland! (Are you a SF Giants, fan? They are currently in 1st place in the NL West...woohoo!)
Inredible images + mind blowing b roll + masterfully informative = the best ND video I have ever watched👏👏👏. Nigel, you and Mads inspired my first trip to Iceland and I cannot wait to get back there once the world opens up again for us here at the Southern tip of Africa. I am SO looking foreword to the rest of your Iceland series, but I do want to ask a favour…. please include the location names in your description? My Icelandic is non-existant, so all I got from your pronounciation is that this volcano starts with an M and ends with fjell😀
I need to remember when you go on location that my vertigo buttons will be tested, even while I'm sitting down.😲 Great imagery from a bucket list location. A good lesson with further study needed. Looking forward to more Iceland. 🥂
Just amazing! And I’m taking about the place and your effort to make us understand these concepts. I really appreciate your effort to chip out your time while shooting, I understand it must be difficult. Hope to have an apple along with you someday.
Gret job : )) over there at Iceland. There is another factor as well that affects depth of field or sharpness which is the curved plane-of-in-focus especially on wide angles, it's far from flat. Apps like photo pills don't take that into account. Depending on where one puts the horizon in the frame it helps a lot and one can get away with larger apertures and sometimes the complete opposite and your method is a sure way to get it all in focus. I like to use Tilt-shift lens when doing landscapes but it's easy to miss the perfect angle of the tilt so I do a couple focus bracketing to be safe. Focus peaking helps a bit on the way.
Hi, great location, photos and video as always. Regarding focus…would you consider talking about large zone focus especially in portrait orientation(live view off). Nobody’s saying a word about it. Thank you again for such great and informative videos
Great explanation of how to use PhotoPills, I can see me using it more often. Spectacular locations and as always great presentation, can't wait until the next chapter :)
Thanks for sharing ! I tend to use the aperture preview button often when I'm not sure. Also I don't like fiddling with my smartphone when I could have taken 3 photo's to stack maybe later but that's just me. Epic landscapes and I can't wait until sunday as I am in Iceland myself hopefully by then...

There once was a time that lenses had hyper focal distance scales right there on the lens barrel.

Thank you my friend for this amazing and informative video, I can't wait to see the next one! well done
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Hugo! That means a lot
Wonderful footage.. thanks for sharing. I really like that you make everything understandable for the average person.
Very helpful explaining the photopills app. Thanks for the education, priceless to beginners like me learning as we go.
Thank you for this video Nigel, it was incredibly informative and I learned a lot about focusing! Can't wait to see more of your trip!
Holy shit, I had goosebumps at the end looking at the volcanos footage with the Music! 😂 epic!! Can’t wait for next week!
