The masks that would help were the N95, which weren’t required or worn by most people, so there was no point in the masks, so stupid
Also, as Fauci himself mentioned in one of his interviews that if you touch mask, you contaminate it. So there's a proper use, which most people were not following. So, masking was actually harming than benefiting. The main purpose of the mask (at least surgical) was that if you're sick you don't infect others with your sneeze or spit, not the other way round.
