It's going to really be a test of time for millennials because as a millennial I didn't watch Charles Barkley play basketball I was too young but I know of his greatness because of inside the NBA and when he retires, I will officially accept that its all over!
He was one of the biggest stars in the 90's though. I didn't watch basketball at that time but he was legendary for being the toughest guy in the NBA, and I remember the kids talking about how he threw a guy through a window. NBA was so important to kids back then because Jordan was like a superhero, and Barkley was like the tough bad boy of the league.
I remember his rookie season in Philly in the 80's. Dude came in like a beast right out of the gate! Public Enemy had a line on an EP they put out shortly before Nation of Millions dropped: "Simple and plain, give me the lane , I'll throw it down your throat like Barkley..." He was a monster from day one, had never seen anything quite like it.

But if you've ever seen his "Details" shorts for ESPN, I don't think he figured out how to translate his excitement about breaking down tape into something entertaining. He was a purist about it.

Not in a negative way at all, but all of the stories of him playing, to his work ethic, to his mentality, was borderline isolationist and pretty toxic to other people. A lot of the time it just seemed that he could not understand why other people were not as good as he is - and that may have influenced his decision into not being on TNT.
