Maize Production in West Bengal Explain by Dr. Bikas Mandal in Bengali

- This is the 17th video on Maize production technology explained in Bengali by Dr Bikas Mandal on request of some of the viewers of the channel. Fertile loamy soil with good drainage facility is suitable. June to mid July for kharif crop and October to mid February except December for rabi crop is optimum time of sowing.
Hybrid variety :
Ganga Safed, Ranjit, Decan 105, Makka 105 etc
HYV Composite :
Kishan, Azad, Uttam, Megha etc.
Seed rate : 20 kg per ha
Seed treatment by Vitavax 2.5g or Carbendazim 3g per kg of seeds
Overnight soaking of seed in fresh water before sowing should be done for good timely uniform germination.
Optimum plant population per hectare is 50000
Spacing : R - R : 25-30cm
Depth of sowing : 4cm
Nutrition :
Nitrogen, phosphate and potash @ 140, 70 and 70 kg per ha, respectively with organic manure @ 5t per ha.
Organic manure during land preparation, half of N, full of P and half of K as basal during final land preparation should be applied. One fourth nitrogen and one fourth potassium as first top dressing during knee height stage and rest 1/4th of N and K during tusseling stage at sufficient moisture condition. Zinc sulphate 25kg and Borax 10kg per ha soil application during land preparation.
Irrigation : 5-6 watering at three weeks intervals is generally required for rabi crop. Need based irrigation in kharif crop. Knee high, tusseling and silking stages are most critical for irrigation point of view.
Weed management :
Topramezone 0.030kg/ha plus Atrazine 1.0kg/ha as pre emergence application after sowing seeds. Tembotrione plus halosulfurone methyl at 20 DAS as post emergence application is very helpful against major weeds in maize. One hand weeding is advantageous in addition to this. Please consult before herbicide application with the expert. Initial 35 days is most critical for weed control during which the maize field should be kept weed free for getting higher production of maize seeds. Chemical weed control is advantageous over hand weeding as it is cost effective, less time consuming and more effective.
Earthing up is essential and it is to be done at knee high stage of maize plants. This measure will protect the crop from lodging and loss of yield. Other plant protection measures against insect pests should be taken as and when required by taking advice from the expert in the field.
