  • Every year, weather it is BC or Alaska, I make my way to visit the Glaciers. There is a specific energy I feel at a Glacier that I have not experienced anywhere else. I don't know if it is the size, the history, the power or just the sheer complexity of a glacier, but I have been mesmerized year after year.
    I have spent days watching the tidewater glaciers calve into the ocean. I have been fortunate to witness the river path change and erode massive sections of glacier, revealing earth that hasn't been seen in thousands of years. But this year was a new experience for me, and my first time crossing a complete glacier.
    I know it is not safe to walk on a glacier, but this particular section is far down and quite flat and consistent all the way across. It was a risk I was willing to take, and I am happy that I did. People have been using this particular glacier for more than 100 years, exploring the mountains in search of gold. In fact, I couldn't walk for more than five minutes without finding some kind of human remains, left behind from a time long gone. Some of these items may be sitting today, exactly where they were lost before, but I assume many of them have ended up on the ice from avalanche and land slides. Never the less, they will ride the mighty glacier until it reaches the outflow, and ultimately the Pacific Ocean.
    The trip up to the Salmon Glacier is a world class drive, and worth the trip just in its self. There are few places in the world where you can drive from the ocean to a glacier in little more than 20 km. The wildlife is prevalent, the views are endless and the air is pure, what more can an adventurer ask for.

    Dustin hi from Calgary, thanks for the glacier trip. There is a particular crunch when crossing a glacier ice once you've experienced it you will never forget it. I have the greatest level of respect for your back country travel talents however. As a regular to glacier travel I'd need to add the following;
    Glacier travel is NOT for Joe hiker it is extremely dangerous. *** Stop 🛑 Do not travel on ANY glacier without an ACMG rated guide or investing in proper glacier travel and crevasse rescue training *** both are easily found on the internet. Its a place of beauty and excitement but please choose to enjoy it responsibly.
    Thanks for another great posting best of luck making your way up the Cassiar.
