There are cleaner places... like the downtown, with skyscrapers and hightech stuff. But bar street intended to be dirty and full of negative emotions. It's like a dustbin of the city.
In bar streets, yes. Some attractive, poor young women from the country congregate in pick up bars & CBDs to become "secondary wives" (mistresses) of wealthy businessmen. Prostitution is forbidden in China, but this practice is tolerated. Notice the abnormal number of long legged, scantily dressed beauties. I'm a quarter Chinese on my mother's side (my grandfather is from Guangzhou) & I can tell you that regular Chinese women don't dress in micro skirts & visible garter belts. It's sometimes hard to discern fashionable women in party scene outfits from aspiring mistresses in bar streets. Plus, in regular streets & fashion malls women's phones are in their bags, not glued to their hands. Things maybe changed a little from your mother's time. Now China has feminism movement to proclaim the right for "Free Dressing". So, many girls would dress like this to show the society that they are not to be defined by others, as long as they are not go to the workplace, of course.
