You should fact-check the point about virgin steel vs electric arc furnace steel - im 90% sure there is almost no difference in terms of capability to make the grades of steel we need. EAFs can (and do, in sheffield) make steels for aircraft and nuclear subs. The technology is improving all the time and other major European economies are investing heavily. I suspect when it was first devised it couldnt compete with blast furnaces, but im pretty sure thats not the case anymore. We also havent mined iron ore in Britain for decades, so the argument about blast furnaces meaning self-sufficiency doesnt make any sense.
Ava - if you hate doing that intro, just don’t do it; take a stand. I get that sentiment, but I always think “why bring them up?” (the nonces, rather than the podcasts) - I don’t really want to have to think about it every time I tune in for some capital ‘J’ Journalism.
So far, Labour have shown themselves to be an utter disaster. They have sufficient numbers to hang on in government for the foreseeable future, but the public animosity towards them is now palpable. In the long run, they are doomed.
they are only 3 months in to a 4 year term, the smart strategy would be to get the ugly stuff out of the way early so you reap the benefits of an improving economy closer to the election. I'm mostly surprised that anyones surprised the knives have come out for them in the right wing media - just remember, the people desperate to convince you that Labour are a disaster are heavily invested in the next government being a Tory one
Even I'm impressed at how quickly they've achieved everything I expected they were planning to achieve. It's now almost impossible to argue to a disenfranchised Tory voter on the merits of why Labour is better. So here's to another 15 years of Tory rule under the catchphrase of how Labour broke the country. Whoop de f-ing do.
Dear Laura - get your facts right. The triple lock applies to state pensions. .Not pension credit. That triple lock figure will be gross, not net. It will put pensions above the tax threshold! All this vacuous chatter and no proper scrutiny.

Don't worry you're not going mad. The Putin bots have just been pushing this fuel thing to open up a route to defund Ukraine. It's very confusing by design. "Why are they sending money to Ukraine when our Granmas and Grandads are freezing at home?"
That's not the reason. It's political posturing. A better and more effective AND efficient system would be to tax it back from those who earn too much. The information and means to do so already exist in the tax system. But their current method of cutting it from the bottom up not the top down is terrible.
