    thanks Martin, was waiting on your review before purchasing so now ordered and fortunately warlord currently have free p&p for orders over $40 to USA. Like the sound of unit organization, I already have my units with men at arms mixed in with bow and bill as that does appear more likely

    You could put a base of men-at-arms into the centre of your bill-and-bow unit and put the billmen behind as supporting ranks.

    Excellent report! I can't wait to see you putting this one on the table, I like the idea of including Mem at Arms in the with the bows, that feels more aligned with the argument that each knight (read man at arms) kept his Retinue with him on the battlefield and fought as a Retinue. The Beaufort mentioned in the book is the middle one, the one that was beheaded at Hexham. Again you have made me want to play some HC! I may buy this just for the read

    • @Shardifier
      @Shardifier 22 часа назад +2

      Yeah, that's the direction I took - things not being neatly lined up by 'type' in neat-ish units. I hope you enjoy it if you do get it!

    Sounds good , I have never liked the idea of MAA, Bill or Bow units , I have always said it should be a household unit with all 3 units , I cannot see a group of troops turning up and a officer saying " all MAA over there and Bill over there and Bow over here , It would not be good for command and control and worse for morale , just my thinking tho

    • @Shardifier
      @Shardifier 22 часа назад +1

      The general idea was that things probably weren't nicely delineated with everyone organised by 'type' - but also it looks like some troops may have 'double hatted' e.g. give a nice strong longbowman a bill, and hey presto you have two troop types!

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  13 часов назад +1

      Totally, and completely understandable, there's plenty of room for people to experiment with this 👍

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  13 часов назад +1

      "every bowman with a bill at his back.." or something along those lines 😅 the great thing is we can interpret it so many ways, and all of them can be played out. I do like a heavily armed Longbowman to be fair 😁

  • @AlanMcCoubrey
    @AlanMcCoubrey День назад +7

    The removal of the Men at Arms seems to detract significantly from the spirit of the period.

    • @Shardifier
      @Shardifier 22 часа назад

      They're not wholly removed, just removed as a separate unit and are now an upgrade, as units probably weren't nicely delineated by 'type'. From my understanding, and after some conversations with people more knowledgeable than I, this approach seemed reasonable - but if you really want some all-man at arms units, go for it!

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  13 часов назад +1

      I can understand that but the list is trying something a little different. There is always the option of just upgrading the MAA from a Bill unit and swapping the bases 👍

    I’m impressed/relieved. Although I’m unsure about some of the RPG elements, but as you say, you don’t have to use those rules. 6 shots from archers….. even if you have only 3 rounds…. Could be devastating

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  День назад +1

      I know, but then, it could be, means a unit can go from 0 to shaken in one very unlucky bout of shooting which I think is quite good. Means making sure certain units soak up the arrows, especially if they are in limited supply 👍

    • @Shardifier
      @Shardifier 22 часа назад

      Different strokes for different folks - I'm a fan of adding some extra narrative bits to wargames, but if it's not your cup of tea then give 'em a miss. The archery thing I'll probably end up talking about on a podcast or something some time, but there's a rationale behind it I promise!

    • @BootsontheTable
      @BootsontheTable 22 часа назад +1

      @Shardifier oh I will thank you, very kind. Actually I like narrative too as long as it doesn't become too involved and doesn't require lots of bookkeeping. I understand the logic of Arrowstorm as well - anyone reading history will - but will need to see how it plays out on the table. As Martin says you could shake an opponent in one shot which seems very tough. Ok you have to be lucky but that with the risk of break tests on 6 could spoil your day. Anyway we shall see on the table

      Not in the book no but could easily be added. That would be really interesting, we had a papal legate one game who excommunicated people, we essentially said that enemy units within X inches of him had to reroll on dice of there break test if the opponent wanted - same as the rule for elephants. That went well, then he was overrun and slaughtered by some angry handgunners if I remember correctly haha
