  • Edwin Encarnacion was the worst third basemen in baseball with the Cincinnati Reds ranking dead last in terms of WAR from 2005-2009. But after a midseason trade to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009, he went on to terrorize the league during his peak in the 2010s, managing 8 straight seasons with 32+ home runs, 3 All-Star appearances and one of the craziest walk off home runs in Wild Card history...

I joined my brothers long time AL only auction fantasy baseball league in 2011, I had a rough first year learning how the league worked. Nobody took me seriously. When I threw out Edwin Encarnacion at the 2012 draft, everybody looked at me confused. And when I got him for $1, I was confused, but elated. I had heard about the work he put in in the off season. Everyone laughed at me for targeting him in the draft. They don't laugh at me anymore. And I don't let them forget. That one pick 12 years ago has stuck in the minds of everyone who is still in the league from that draft. While Encarnacion has remained my biggest steal ever, I do have a knack for finding the diamond in the rough. And every year just by getting in on the bidding for a "scrub" here and there, people get paranoid that I've targeted the next Edwin Encarnacion and will pay way more than they're worth just to keep me from getting them.

The fun part of Encarnacion obviously declining in his two years with Cleveland is the fact that in order to overhaul his salary, they traded him and got All-Star 1B Carlos Santana from the Mariners. Both players hit 34 HRs that year, but Santana has a .911 OPS and 93 RBIs to .888 and 86 RBIs respectively. Mariners ownership wanted an older player so they could ship him off later so they could bring up Daniel Vogelbach. A white boy. The season after a woman got fired from the organization for quoting Mariners management saying Dominicans are dumb and lazy.

He never produced over 5 war in a season and finished with only 35 war for his career. Superstars produce seasons of over ten war, usually a few of them. He wasn’t even the best third baseman of that time period….that would be Adrian Beltre. I’d put him down the list behind Donaldson and Longoria also who are slightly younger but played during his peak. He went from really bad to really good but not worst to first.

No, he was never a superstar. He had a very, very good career, but he was never a superstar.

If he fixes his swing and stance sooner, we're talking about a guy who might have hit 600hr

Worst 3rd baseman i can remember is Miguel Sano. And the funny part is, he was DRASTICALLY worse at first base somehow. He just had a 3rd baseman instinct and a cannon arm but was just awful at fielding. Now imagine taking away his arm and his fielding instincts so you can put him at 1B. Zero glove, zero instinct, zero athleticism. Give him some goldilocks baseballs and he'll hit it 600 feet though. At least those 3 years when healthy.
