Out here in australia the area in which i lived once was a very large vegetable growing area and i can assure you the paddocks were covered with nothing but leylands and david browns they were very well liked for their ploughing ability
A guy on the then Leyland Tractors stand at the English " Royal Show " ( now shut down for a railway ! ) once told me that they used a de-tuned lorry engine for these " Heavyweights " , being 85 or 100 H.P. then , the same engine was used , although tuned up a bit & turbo,d where neccessary , in the last of the big Gainsborough built Marshalls , 100 & 125 , I was once offered a slightly famous 125 - 4wd , I wish I,d bought it , it had been James Nickerson,s on his Lincolnshire farm . As a footnote , a lifelong mate told me the Leyland straight 6,s could have been got built as 4W.D. , by the Bathgate factory loading the ordered consignment up , & transporting them to County Commercial Cars , Fleet , Aldershot , Hants , who then converted them to work with their style of transmission being driven constantly from each back 1/2 shaft , unstoppable ploughing , but terrible transmission wind - up on the road , but , what an engine ! & the guy below,s right , tremendous pulling power from uniquely balanced hydraulics . Happy Spanners !
At Charnley,s , the excellent storeman , Mike , who is now dead , once told me they had developed a much tougher clutch assembly to replace the original fitment clutch in the middleweights with , due to blokes like me ripping the middle straight out of the original ones doing hard work , ( the engine , gearbox & hydraulics stood it all , for 41 years ! , but I trashed many a clutch , big baling ). I have never seen one , but anybody needing to replace a Leyland or perhaps early Marshall clutch should talk to the new storeman or one of the engineers at Charnley,s , for me , this is the weak point on a Leyland ....... R.I.P. Mike , I never met him face to face , but a most knowledgeable chap & always polite , on the phone .
Hi there rob, I have bought a 285 last week and it needs a few things doing to it. It needs a new slave cylinder for the brakes, any idea where to find one? Also the steering is vague and wanders all over the road. I also need some more cab glass for the back, where should I look for that? Lastly I wanted to know if the transmission wineing was common as my one is deafening in top gear even at slow speeds. Would be great if u could point me in the right direction I'm 16 and want a tidy tractor for road runs so just need to fix my one up,Cheers Miles

@@MASSYMADMAN The Ford 7000 was overrated really. A chap I know had both a 7000 and a Zetor Crystal 8011 (!) and he said the Zetor was the better puller
Thanks I went and looked the PTO clutch pedal and lever are seized and grind if you put in running you have to turn it off to put it in . Would it be a big job to fix
What a great bit of ploughing and the leyland is ticking along lovely

The grip those Leyland’s put down defied all logic.
Lord Muck yeah Kurt the leyland was unreal for grip
Got to say that ploughing is tidy it looks like the plough is well set.
That's the same plow the Ford 7000 was pulling .. Leyland sounds great and good strong pull

Wow, never thought a Leyland could pull so good - sounds just right as well!
Trevor Jarvis leylands were always a great gripping and pulling tractor very underestimated
Most 285 Leyland's in Australia have have 23.1_26 rear wheels with cast centers
Nice tractor and very nice plowing job. Looks like it was done by a professional plow man.
old school best real horses under the bonnet
2 WD doing the job of a modern-day 4WD and with out all the gizmos to. No on board computers needed for that job.
Oooh I'm liking that a lot, she sounds very well 👍
nice article about this in classic tractor this month.
Does the Leyland 285 have a six cylinder engine.?
Yes the Leyland 285 & 2100 where 6cyl
The down swept exhaust looks more like belonging to a Leyland 1200.?
285/2100 are much and such the same tractor only a little horsepower of difference.
Great vid looks great pulling tractor
Antony farming thanks
Are you doing any more videos on servicing the Leyland
Ey up, is this from the article in this month's classic tractor magazine?
David Rushworth yes it’s in the Classic Tractor

Yes your spot on Phillip I’ve used Charnleys as well very good to deal with 👍🏻
Doing what leyland do best love it
Tom Reel yeah Tom doing what they were built for
Sounds sweet. How did it compare with the 7000.
Leyland has the edge over the 7000 the 7000 pulled it but was working very hard
What was the speed difference, the leyland seems to be a snails pace to the ford

I'm looking at a Leyland 344 what hp would it be
55 hp

Oh yes 😍
mphelan1234 how many boxes of tissues have you used 😂
Seems little effort to that Leyland engine for such a pull.
All Leylands where great gripping tractors for there time.
