@@HPNomad Problem with him is he's a very weird guy who seemed to be running the show more as a vanity project than anything else. Quite telling the team all fell out with the guy.
This was awesome to see. Adventure out of time was such a huge part of my childhood. I still have my original copy of Titanic Adventure out of time cd rom on my desk from when it first came out! Will never get rid of it!
Thanks for doing this, Adventure out of Time was one of the most incredible games I played as a kid, it really just made my head explode with how deep it was. It's nice that you can show the people who worked on that project the love that you all show towards Titanic and the game itself.
If I'm not mistaken I believe there is at least one reference. I believe one of the rooms he did on C Deck is styled the same as the cabin that your character stays in in Adventure Out of Time
loved that game, my reason for my interest in Titanic came from hearing stories of how my grandmother washed the bodies from the Lusitania since then i have been fascinated with the ships of that era
My siblings and I really enjoyed AOoT as kids (I love coming back to it even today), and even then, I remember trying to imagine what a fully-explorable Titanic environment would look like. Really glad to see that coming to fruition with THG.
I replayed AOoT a few years ago, and it was the first time I'd actually finished it. I was surprised at how clever and well-written it is, and the soundtrack is incredible as always. Thanks Andrew! This was a pleasure to listen to.
Would it be possible to do a faithful remake of Out of Time using the project 401 model, lighting and animations? You could keep the jpeg people but the backgrounds, environments and such would honor glory/401 standards.
Such a huge classic and real innovation in the gaming industry. It would be such a dream to see that game modernized and reissued but God only knows who owns it now.
Adventure out of time has a ton of 9/10 on steams and an general "very positive" score. I never finished the game, but I was a dumb kid who just wanted to play doom.. but I know i've developed that dang film a dozens times easy! I still have my physical copy! What an awesome video and interview, so fun!
Adventure out of time was one of the games of my childhood! What a groundbreaking game, and surreal experience back on Windows 95! I can't wait for you to get Andrew Nelson back on for a playthrough!
I'm sorry for you that this interview didn't go as planned. I wish we could have got to your questions to get the Insight from the Storyteller which never came. More like an animator overseer board member funder. I was hoping to get inside the backstory of the awesomeness of the writing. Not your fault James. I believe I share your same passion for this game and that was like finding out Santa Claus wasnt real. Js
Fantastic interview! Seeing my favorite developers together in a video is a dream come true!🎉 I wanted to answer the question about why Jack died in the Titanic film, according to James Cameron. The 1997 film was not supposed to be a story about just Jack and Rose. Cameron's main goal was to tell, as authentic as possible, the story of Titanic, its crew, and its passengers. (I know that the film had some serious factual errors. Regardless, that was Cameron's goal. For the most part, he did well.) Jack and Rose served as an appeal with their romance and were figurative in their roles. Rose represented the life of 1st Class passengers while Jack represented the life of the 3rd Class passengers. Jack died because: (1) most passengers who died were 3rd Class. (2) His death would inflict on the audience the feelings of loss that many suffered from the tragedy. (3) His death was heroic because he is more concerned about Rose's survival than his own. Or how Cameron would say, Jack died because he "wrote it in the script." Could Jack have survived? I think this film from National Geographic has the fairest answer: ruclips.net/video/1jXHFEy-ibc/видео.html Anyway, I LOVED this interview and look forward to more interviews with Andrew Nelson!💖💖💖
I remember seeing the big white box with the porthole way back when... back when "Chapters" used to sell video games and play through booklets... I was mesmerized and used to walk the ship for hours as a kid.
For me it wasn’t a film that got me hooked on Titanic but more my fascination with history and coming across the Titanic disaster through that and then gradually learning more about it as time went on and at our local museum they had a temporary exhibit on Titanic and seeing the artifacts really moved me and then when I was 12 I saw the movie from 1997 as I was old enough to watch it. But I remember my parents telling me before watching the film that I had to cover my eyes when I heard Rose ask Jack to draw her and I did. And they said when the old lady Rose voice came on I could look again. Nowadays at 27 I don’t look away for obvious reasons. But that film really got me and I was an emotional wreck by the time the end credits rolled. After that I was buried deep in Titanic lore with no chance of escape and over time I found the Adventure out of time game and loved it. Watched all the other movies and read books. I can say steam allowed me to play the game again after many years because my only copy literally blew up. I’d played it for years no problem until one day my pc hard drive went boom. I can’t even describe the noise it made it was unearthly. I was playing the game and the pc fan went haywire and then boom mixed with the sound of breaking glass is the best way to try to describe it and my computer disc tray opened and the screen went off and the system switched off and it was bust but also the game disc was in pieces. But years later I found it on steam thankfully.
Not calling you a liar but how can you be 12 in 97’ and fast forward to now and your only 27? 🤷♂️😂 Should you be 39 by now ? 🤨 Might want to check your numbers on this story lol
I didn’t say I was 12 in 1997. I said I was 12 when I watched the 1997 film. Because there are many versions of Titanic in films so I was specifying which film I was referring to
No doubt this game cashed in on the blockbuster success of the Titanic movie when it was released. It could not have been available at a more perfect time. I remember playing this when I was 9 or 10 and loved everything about this game.
A couple of 'What-Ifs': 1) Vintage Digital Revival was able to collaborate with the copyright holders of AOoT and create the sequel(s) it would be fun to see the Russian Revolution and Hindenburg. 2) A whole adventure novel series based on AOoT and the sequel ideas... 3) OR BOTH‽
Couldn't 'Adventure out of Time' be a remake? Simply integrate it into Honor and Glory. Back then, the Olympic deck plan was used, especially in the Turkish baths, right?
i still have the original cds for the game, I need to see about getting on my windows 11 I can play it on 10 if yall can make an upgraded version that would be a such a great thing but I want both Titanic Honor & Glory and Titanc Aoot the story of Titanic lives on even after she sank
So the sequel was going to be Russian Revolution? But wouldn't that have not happened with the perfect ending? That's what the notebook was going to allow not happen.
I think they were saying that it’s possible the going back in time part could have just been a dream of some sort so it all still happened and it would make sense that there could be more adventures afterwards.
Would LOVE to see some sort of Adventure out of time narrative worked back into this project.
Tell that to Tom Lynskey. That was his baby. Now THG will only be a virtual museum with no story elements

This brought back so many fond childhood memories. Countless hours spent playing this on my Gateway computer.
the D Deck music always freaked me out, especially with the deck mostly in darkness.
that and the Turkish bath music where you know the dead German guy was fried in the freaky Edwardian tanning bed.
