I think San really liked Won. It is just because of the situation that she left Won and chose to leave with Rin. San did not chose to love Won because of: the crown princess is Dan, there may be lot of trouble, the palace is where her father died, the throne is why her mother died, Rin could be in danger, she could break Rin and Won's friendship, and because it is the "crown prince" that she loves. She also didn't chose Rin in the end, she just leave because she want to start a new life. She has no choice. Leaving Won and going with Rin does not mean that she chose the other over the other. The hint could be seen(as to why I thought of this) is the episode where Won chose Dan as her crown princess instead of San. San's sad and tearing face was showed there. Also, the day when Won and Dan got officially married, San's face is kinda disappointed. It feels like she has something to say to Won before Rin came to her and kissed her. By then, when San came to Won and Won told her that the marriage is already done, San's face became sad. She just hide it. This is also the reason why she kept ignoring Won's holding hands. And also, San confessed in one episode that it is uneasy to think of other man when she is with Won(the episode where Won opened a curtain and he came close face to face with San), maybe because her mind is occupied with thoughts of Won. And also, in an episode when San said that Won should not choose her because she has someone else in her heart(the episode where San makes a plea to Won that he should not choose her as the crown princess) , I think that this is merely an excuse so that Won could already give up on her. Ofcourse, breaking a man's heart is the best way to make that man give his feelings up. I think that when San chose to save Rin and cried when he is about to leave, it is because of the good things Rin has done for her(she also has flashbacks of them as shown in the episode). She cried because Rin is her friend and came to save her everytime. Come to think of it, she also will save Won when Won is in the place of Rin. She would also cry when Won is to leave her(or her leaving Won as shown in the end, however there is no other choice). In the episode where San said that she liked Won, I think she meant it as more than friends. She brought Rin and Won's friendship in the conversation because it is the reason why she couldn't like Won(because she wouldn't want to break there friendship at the first place). This is also the reason behind Won's sad face, he thinks that San cannot like him because she doesn't want to break their friendship and that it will totally make her sad. He also is aware that he is the crowned prince and has a job for his nation. Ps: I also liked Rin at the beginning because there is no reason to not like him. However, I realized that Won really liked San and Rin. He did everything for the both of them. Some people, hate Won because of how he loves. But come to think of it, he is just expressive in his love and he trust to so much. He express his love for San so much and he trust Rin so much that he always deny to himself that Rin liked the girl Rin knows that he(Won) liked. He is not selfish, he just trust so much. This was what she said incase you missed it.. “On the other hand, I think the mystery of who she would choose had a good influence overall. I think maybe San didn’t know herself that she liked Rin. He always came to save her and showed up whenever she needed support, so I think her heart opened little by little. I think that when she learned it was Rin who saved her on the roof, she fell in love with him. I asked the female staff who they thought San liked, but there were different opinions there too, just like with the viewers.” She continued, “I’ve been asked, ‘Weren’t you worried Eun San would appear fickle?’ But I tried to express that San liked Won as a person and a friend, while Rin made her heart flutter more. However, the main point I focused on was that San didn’t want to get in the way of their friendship.”
