Watching it back, I realise I talked about "the basement" and everyone knows Joe's flat was three floors above Mrs Shenton's handbag shop. By basement, I meant the bottom floor of Joe's three-storey flat - honest, guv!!

From what I remember, Heinz used the shotgun for shooting when not on tour out in the countryside. After they had a row and fell out, Heinz moved out all his gear but forgot about the gun under the bed.
The Telstar lawsuit started in March 1963 in France, grew into a clash with experts and counter experts and took five years. During this time the British Copyright Protection Society - as done automatically in cases like this - froze the still accumulating Telstar royalties on a blocked account. The judges didn't impute any intention of plagiarism to Meek, but they verdicted that indeed there were parallels between Telstar and Ledrut's film music, so Ledrut obtained £8500. Unfortunately, Meek wasn't on this earth anymore when the verdict was delivered. The royalties from the blocked account went to his heirs. But nobody gained wealth with this money. Only for Ivy Music, the publisher of the composition Telstar, a pie fell from heaven, but most of the remaining money had to be used to make good Meek's tax and rent dues, overdrawn bank accounts and other debts.
In those days shotgun licenses were freely available at post office counters, 10/6 I think they were. I had friends who used 410's for ratting, and we all lived in N London. Ref my photo at 7:33, I only have one 'N' in Denis, and I had quit the Joe Meek Society a few years previously.

My dad used to play this non-stop when I was a kid...😊 Matt Bellamy of Muse dad played guitar on that song. Joe Meek was a genuine genius. Lots of players passed though his studio, including Ritchie Blackmore.

I think Joe Meek's murder and subsequent suicide had more to do with the fact the police had found a murdered boy stuffed in a suitcase with the initials on it that lead back to Meek and the net was closing.
Meek was cleared of it. Also the kill location was a considerable distance from his home which is uncharacteristic of killers. Meek's almost never left his studio so going so far afield to commit a gruesome murder would be entirely uncharacteristic of him, not to mention he has no ties to any other murders.
@ Never heard that he was “cleared”, just that the investigation stalled after his death. If you think about it another way, Meeks proclivities with young men could have easily gone awry and he panicked. The murder of his landlady and his suicide could have been the final acts of that panic. Fact is, we’ll never truly know because the police didn’t care and there was no one left to arrest. My problem is that some people totally leave out this incident when writing about Meek. It’s like when people leave out John Lennon’s penchant for domestic violence or the fact that Bob Marley’s manager stated that Bob had to be the one to kill the last remaining gunman who shot he and his wife. People want to construct and stick by their airbrushed “legend”. Just saying.
I really don't know but I do think there's a lot more we didn't get told about all that happened in the run-up to the fateful day. Whether it was my imagination or not, when I went round the flat in the 1990s, there was a strong air of doom and melancholy about the place which had been a centre for major creativity for many years…

I was nine when Telstar came out I remember what a new sound that was. I loved have I the right by the honeycombs the electrifying sound is the same

You probably realise the gun didn’t belong to Joe, it was left at the studio by Heinz.
It’s not far fetched that Meek built a television set, a relative of mine built one in the early 60’s from a kit .

Joe Meek was undoubtedly a genius but, at the same time, he would have been an absolute nightmare to work with!
