I am putting vinyl flooring in 4 rooms ... so I have been watching lots of How To Videos ... Jeff's have been the best. He is quite informative! He is a good instructor... most videos where confusing. When I saw this one I said I found him! Someone who can teach. Thank you! Mr. Jeff... I am only one women who is installing 720 sq ft of flooring and you have made my job much easier. THANKS!
I love how you get straight to the point and very detailed. You dont spend 10 mins promoting sponsors, talking about blah blah blah and trying to gain subscribers. 46:26 mins of pure helpful knowledge. Thanks man. And I subscribed ☺.
I installed 500 Sqft of laminate for a family member today . I'm a pipeline welder by trade, and you taught me something new. You Made me look like a pro. It's greatly appreciated.
Outstanding, Thank you so much for all the knowledge. ✨🌟 This 53 year old woman I will install her very first floor by her self while the husband is away and surprise him, show him this can be DIY even by woman professionally. Blessings 💙💚💜
Omg ty for taking two seconds to show a few different ways to cut things. It helps so much to learn how things are done and that we can start with what is available vs needing to buy each new tool in a new project. Several cutting methods helped me so much I had to find my phone to comment. Watch your videos all of the time.
With your easy to understand narration, I didn’t have the multiple “huh?” moments that I’ve had with other vids. Thank you for sharing your experience and techniques.
Absolutely the BEST instructional video I have ever watched. Every detail nicely explained and shown. Very thorough and helpful. I am about to do a big room with the same flooring and even tho I am handy, you taught me that I don't know everything. Well done. Many thanks.
I love everything about this video. One small thing to make it easier at 38:50: Cut your skinny wall boards and last full-width boards to length just like you did. Lock in your skinny wall boards in the full-width spot, lay your full-width boards against the wall, make a mark all the way down the wall boards that are locked in the full-width spot, pull them out and replace them with the actual full width boards. Prevents cutting too wide if the wall is bowed at all because your straight edge will always hit the wall at its widest point. Love your channel, you’re better than bob vila!
Just starting watching a number of your videos and have to say, you really make it look too easy. LOL. What I like most about the videos is the no-nonsense approach. With that being said, when installing this type of flooring on a concrete floor, does it simply require the moisture barrier material?
Just want to say thanks for this video. I just finished laying LVP in my living room and will be doing two other rooms to finish it. Video gave me confidence to do it myself. Saved thousands!!! Still have to put in some transitions, reducers and going with 1x6 baseboards. Many thanks!!!!
I learned so many tips and tricks, my install today is bound to be great. He shows all the little things you need to know and no fluff. A great teacher, and a good guy.
I was surpised to see the use of those small cuts at the walls. I've done most of the rooms in my home in laminate, and always planned out my layout to avoid using any boards less than 4 inches wide or 8 inches long. Most manufacturers suggest this. Also, having a pull bar and oscillating tool is a must in my opinion when doing laminate.
Awesome video!!! I’m a novice who loves working on my 100+ year old house. I always use the 12mm (10 + 2 for padding). It’s just a better stronger product. Very forgiving. I always put a underlay material down just because I don’t have a subfloor. Expensive but makes for a better floor. Thanks again!!
Thank you!!! This is the exact circumstance we are in, installing a modern floor over 100 year old pine. I wanted a waterproof solution and we decided on this. Thank you for the pro tips.
@@Floors_N_More I am looking to install laminate flooring with an underlayment. Where do you install the backer rod and where will we need to silicone like you say? Thanks
I've done a lot of laminate over the years as a DIYer and it is a rally easy and satisfying project. It really transforms a room and doesn't require a lot of tools. If you do it yourself its really affordable and looks a lot nicer than old carpet or rolled vinyl.
very good videos I am starting with my company and I want to continue learning more every day and with these videos everything you can learn is incredible thank you
Thanks so much for this video. I have watched several other videos and none of them showed how the boards buckle a little before they settle into position and how to deal with that situation. I know that I can proceed now, with so much more confidence !
As a lover of historic properties I’m really sad to see those original floors covered up, but at least it’s floating so if someone else buys that house in the future and wants to restore it, the vinyl isn’t glued down.
Awesome. I need you, I can't do this alone. 😂. Nice job. I will remember the tips. I like is flooring because you don't have to nail it down, and the stuff is already on the back side of the board. Thanks a bunch.
The smaller pieces are essential to stagger your joints, if you don’t stagger your joints and use the same boards for each row it’s not going to have as much strength
In this case though; you’re right. He could have taken a minute to just measure the length of the room so he didn’t have to use a slither that small, I usually don’t finish/start a row with a piece any smaller than 200mm
In lieu of cutting 3 boards to start, I use the cutoff from the first row to start the second, the cutoff from the second to start the third, and so on, as long as the measurements work. Often I'll end up with almost zero waste. It does give the joints a stepped look, but it looks good to me. I've also read over and over not to leave slivers like he's doing here, and to use spacers against the wall. Maybe I'm super strong, but the floor can still slide with weights on it. Spacers make much more sense to me. Explained well, just a few items I'd prefer to do differently.
Hi Jeff, thank you so much for inspiring us to tackle any home projects efficiently! I absolutely love watching your all videos. It has become my hobby during this COVID-19 lockdown. :) Recently, I'm tackling laminate flooring project in my house in Hamilton, Ontario and I do have a question for you. What type of surface screws should I use to reduce floor squeaks and creeks? My house was built almost 50 years ago and does not have the subfloor system. There are wooden planks on top of the joists and existing 2" wide Oak hardwood floor is laid directly on top of wooden planks. What should I do to reduce squeaks and creeks? Thank you in advance!
Subscribed! How could anyone bypass any of these fantastically explained, step-by-step, how to video. Was having so much fun watching and learning, was not bothered by the length of the video. Thank you!
Can't thank you enough for this video. You have given me the courage to try this on my own. Really appreciate all the details and thorough explanation!! Thank you, thank you!!!!
Hey Jeff, thanks for all of your videos, they are really comprehensive and helpful! I have a question about the underpad. In your "which brand of vinyl flooring is best" video you mentioned you still need an underpad even if the vinyl plank comes with it. In this video you seem to be conflicting with that information. Can you please clarify it? Thank you!
As a professional there's so much wrong with this video. You should never lay along the same grain as the original floor & if you do a ply sub-floor should be installed in the opposite direction of the original floor boards. Where's the vapour barrier? Fantastic video and production, Jeff & Max! I have 2 questions and 1 request and 1 joke. Quick synopsis of me: about to be a 1st-time non-condo home buyer and have been consuming your content like crack for my very-near DIY projects. Just fantastic knowledge transfer and quality, and thank you upfront for your time and effort presenting it. Q1: Checking out Home Depot, I've noticed that Luxury Vinyl Plank, Engineered Hardwood, and low-end Hardwood all run in generally the same price point per sq. ft. As a basement is a typical focal point for a home-owner and DIY'er, what would be recommended as the "better" all-around solution? In the real world, is that the norm, or is a vapor barrier + sub-floor the norm? Request: Watching the hell out of your videos, I think this was the first one that I saw a Milwaukee product and not a Dewalt product used. I'd love a tool review and a "why it's used" type of overview in your industry. Granted, not every DIY'er needs a contractor's level of a tool chest...but maybe a "must have" list along with "you should probably have this so you save time where it counts, and here's why" type of thing. Joke: I see that you have a laser level, that by design is straight b/c its a freakin laser. But did you get that new Dewalt green laser yet? when are you going to get that new green laser?
Q1 go with vinyl,Q2 with vinyl no need for a subfloor. laminate use the dmx blue underlayment/vapor barrier. the subfloor system is the cadilac of subfloors and used to protect an investment in cases where waster damage is highly probable.
Home RenoVision DIY would a subfloor system make the basement floor more comfortable or is it negligible? I am in a similar climate to you and winter can make the concrete cold. My basement has been waterproofed... probably due to moisture issues in the past. But still I consider it a risk. I liked the project where you framed your walls on top of the DMX+OSB Subfloor. It seems like the ultimate comfort solution. But it is definitely more cost and labor.
Ya drilling in the center wasn't the easiest. I'm guessing he did that just in case he didn't get the marking perfect and end up drilling into the sub floor and having to replace the piece
I just had to pause on the point about the value an air compressor brings to every day life. I use mine for way more than I ever thought I wouuld. Completely agree.
28:02 Is there room for expansion under the door jamb? Is the board a little long? I think I've been leaving too much space under my door jambs and cutting the board to follow the angle of the molding. I'm going to have to rip them out so I'd like to know if this is too tight or if it's OK. Could this be a problem later? I know he said that in heated and cooled homes there isn't that much expansion and contraction, and I am installing during the summer. I do like the tighter look if it's safe to do. can anyone enlighten me?
I've learned a ton from this guy and I love watching his videos. He is very detailed and he is a funny guy he makes his videos interesting and fun to watch!
You aren't,it was just the measurement of the room laminate flooring is the same size' generally you can finish small once the staggered is right, solid flooring various so you can finish small and start small bcoz you have different sizes 👍
Getting ready to lay vinyl planks and noticed you made use of some of the remnant pieces without the locking piece. I assumed that crease would expand and show. That's good to know so I dont waste so many pieces.
My go to diy learn as I go videos. Very helpful and informative without all the unnecessary content. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated 🙏🏻
Thanks for a great lesson. Your freehand cutting on the table saw however is not something most beginners should try. Unless you are already skilled at this type of cut it can be very dangerous and even with years of practice should be done very carefully. A better method for the average guy would be to clamp another board on as a fence and cut with a skill saw. Slower, is better than a trip to the ER. (I freehand frequently BTW, but I’ve been a carpenter for 30 years. I don’t think I would have put that in the video though, know to many carpenters who didn’t get the learning curve right and are missing fingers from this exact process.)
I am preparing for installation of vinyl plank flooring in the foyer and bathrooms where I attend church; after measuring, the flooring will be 1/16" higher than the threshold on a double door installation. I removed the threshold to find it was installed on 3/4" treated lumber material that appears to be ripped from 2x4s spanning two separately poured concrete slabs where the building was constructed and a porch poured on the front of the building. About 3/4 of the threshold is over the original slab. Looking forward to you suggestion
I was looking for a good video to help me installing this type of floor. Your’s has exceeded all my expectations. Your tips and tricks will be used during my installation! It was greatly enjoyable! Great video! Thank you! 👍👍👍
OM freaking G!!! I just stumbled on your channel and I put in laminate to create me a new office area. I had an absolute hellaious time trying to figure out how to get around a closet / doorway similar to this 37:00 and ruined a few boards trying to cut around / under. This would have saved me so much time to get all this last bit done.
Would love to see how you install flooring around rounded objects. I have a rounded bottom step and i've seen a few video's of people scribing cardboard to make a stencil to make a rounded / curved cut
yep, that piece at 13:12 looks horrible, based on other installation videos it is recommended to measure the plank lengths and shift accordingly to make sure you don't get these tiny pieces on the longest run of your flooring...
I've ordered a dovetail saw...what a fantastic tool to help get the job done properly. Thanks for the experience and knowledge you shared, I really appreciate it :)
thanks bud i havent laid floors in 10 years. and you helped my bring back tricks i forgot before i started. like transitions and angles for moulding. thanks alot i liked because its totally indept on the facts beginners dont know. you did an awsome job on helping out the human race who loves to do house improvements on there own. give ya a five out of five. But i would have cut out the cores of the doors and glued them back in for support.

You aren't,it was just the measurement of the room laminate flooring is the same size' generally you can finish small once the staggered is right, solid flooring various so you can finish small and start small bcoz you have different sizes 👍
you can use clamps and a level to also make sure you get a straight cut on the bottom of the door
You're a great instructor and by watching you makes me realize that I never really had a real teacher
I caught that 9:50 lol
Dovetail saw. Never heard of it before. I always used a Japanese saw. Well I learn lots of new stuff every time I watch Jeff's videos. Good stuff. ;)
Love it. I learned a lot. Thanks. From Quebec Canada.
Just Outstanding Knowledge, Application , Explanation and Job Completion. Thank you so so much. Now I know that I can do it.
I can't thank you enough for this video! It helped me to successfully install flooring in my house! Thanks again! 🙂
No black eye .
I was waiting for someone to say something. 😂
So helpful. The tips and tricks are practically priceless. thanks for your videos Ace.
I was looking for a good video to help me installing this type of floor. Your’s has exceeded all my expectations. Your tips and tricks will be used during my installation! It was greatly enjoyable! Great video! Thank you! 👍👍👍
Been installing laminate...since the first 'glued' edition!! Good tips ALWAYS help...!!

The patron saint of DIY
The talking mannerisms is so much like Red Green lol.
Great how to tips video. Things I never thought of.
THANKS FOR SHARING. I LEARNED A LOT. GOING TO TRY IT MYSELF
I'd say get a multi-tool. It's so much easier than the saw and it's so useful for other tasks too.
Most detailed video on DIY flooring. Thank you!
Clear and complete as usual with you, Jeff. Thank you
Would love to see how you install flooring around rounded objects. I have a rounded bottom step and i've seen a few video's of people scribing cardboard to make a stencil to make a rounded / curved cut
Loved it.... I am a beginner, just started a Handy Man company in Swaziland.. Just learnt a lot..
Genius tip with cutting out for the HVAC vent. I was dreading that!
Never use small pieces, always use at least 12” long
8" is the minimum per the manufacturer, but I agree with you, too short doesn't look good and limits strength.
yep, that piece at 13:12 looks horrible, based on other installation videos it is recommended to measure the plank lengths and shift accordingly to make sure you don't get these tiny pieces on the longest run of your flooring...
Yeah it looked more like a schoolboy misstep a non pro would use .
Never use small peices like that looks terrible
Stepping down us very quick to fit and less moving about.. Good idea that..
I've ordered a dovetail saw...what a fantastic tool to help get the job done properly. Thanks for the experience and knowledge you shared, I really appreciate it :)
It really did make such a difference to the finish...a great tool everyone should get
You could also just get an oscillating tool like a normal person lol
thanks bud i havent laid floors in 10 years. and you helped my bring back tricks i forgot before i started. like transitions and angles for moulding. thanks alot i liked because its totally indept on the facts beginners dont know. you did an awsome job on helping out the human race who loves to do house improvements on there own. give ya a five out of five. But i would have cut out the cores of the doors and glued them back in for support.
What about doing stairs? Is there any tip and tricks to make them look nice?
I love your cutter. First time iv seen that.. shows you sure are a pro..
The best video I have ever seen. Thank you so much. Best explainations
Hey Home reno!!
Im willing to bet, those are 12mm Unilin/foldloc joints. I guarantee that was manufactured by Kronospan. CL17 plant.
