  • Today let's look at a lovely medium format camera that is also a rangefinder! You can find these on that auction website for between $150 and $300 and I would highly recommend getting one if you think larger medium format cameras are too big and heavy to carry around every day or on a vacation, especially since they are much, much cheaper than the more famous Mamiya 7 medium format ragefinder camera.

    Very nice step by step instruction.
    Especially liked the use of the correct "part" words instead of "thingy" words so many other youtubers use.

    I love my copy of this camera. My copy has been pretty much bomb proof. The meter is very accurate, the lens is extremely sharp with excellent contrast and color rendering. Focus is quick & easy. After lugging around a Pentax 67 and a Nikon F2 SLR through Oregon's Cascades this summer, this camera is fantastic. I also love the medium format point and shoot version of this camera, which I also own, the GA645. It's 100% electronic but it's amazing with very accurate auto-focus and meter and with exposure compensation (+3 to -3), Aperture Priority and full manual everything. If I could only take one camera on a trip to the Grand Canyon, Hawaii or the Pacific Northwest, this or the GA645 would be the one I would take. The images with the huge medium format negative or slides will crush anything in 35mm, especially if you want to print a nice sized enlargement. F4 on medium format is more like f2.8 on a 35mm. I've never had a problem tilting the camera 90 degrees to do landscape shots. It's no different than a normal camera that is always in landscape and you have to tilt it 90 degrees to do a portrait shot, so I don't understand the reviewer's issue. Anyway a good overview of an excellent MF camera.

    A very detailed and clear summary of the camera. I think one point missed: The shutter has a "bulb" [locked open setting] which is engaged with the little grey tab on the right side of the lens barrel as you look from the camera top. This is unique to the GS series of Fuji 645 cameras, somewhat clumsy to operate, and easy to overlook. The comment on the delicate physical structure of the lens and its protective bar cannot be overstated. Notice that this camera has a filter mounted which lets the lens extend beyond the bar at close focus. Always remove any filter, cap the lens, and move the lens to "infinity" focus when not using. When buying [used], pass on any camera which has any roughness to the focus or shutter setting ring, where the lens is loose or is missing the protective bar. It takes only one rap on the front of the lens to damage, and many of these cameras suffer that fate. 30 years later. Repairs are hard to find and expensive, often not worth doing - a terrible design flaw by Fuji. What were they thinking? To compensate, the lens-camera package can take incredibly sharp photos.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 года назад +1

      Footnote: If you like this camera, consider instead the GA645, its autofocus later version, which uses the same lens. Apart from potentially suffering electronics issues like any other camera of the type, its a much safer investment and (oddly) not that much more expensive.

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 Год назад +1

      Edit: Actually, he does cover the "time" function which holds the shutter open for long exposure. When you cock the shutter and advance the film, that grey tab is supposed to pop up about an eight of an inch so you can press it down (like a shutter release button) to open the shutter. His does not seem to pop up, so his may be defective.

      @@randallstewart175 Actually, I've owned a GS645 and GS645W for many years. For for its delicacy issues, I've always avoided the GS645S. About the time you posted you reply, I in fact did buy a GA645Zi to shift from the heavy Pentax 67 system I have previously used. Extremely happy with it.

    The brassing on the crash bar and lens indicates the crash bar is well worth it. Your video convinced me to buy one of these cameras which did today. Thank you for a very informative and detailed explanation of the camera. It is good to see a camera that is obviously well used. I am now looking forward to my camera arriving.

    Great video. I've recently discovered Fujica cameras on the secondhand market in Australia. I bought 2 ST 605N's. 35mm SLR's. They're probably early 1970's, shutter only goes to 1/700th sec.They're M42 mount. Regarding portrait orientation, Pentax will be putting out a new 35mm half-frame camera. Portrait has become the new Landscape, with the popularity of the smartphone over the last 15 years. I have an Olympus Pen F 1963 half-frame SLR, there were only 3 and all made by Olympus (Pen F, Pen FT and Pen FV.) Some with/some without light meter.

    Great video. This was my first Medium Format film camera and I still have it and love it. The lens is fantastic and you can get excellent bokeh at F4 because F4 on a medium format camera is more like an f 2.8 on a 35mm. The fastest medium format lens on any camera is f 1.9 on a Mamiya 645 and it's like shooting at f.9 on a 35mm. The plane of focus is so narrow that the ear duct can be in focus but the outside edge of the eye will be out of focus on a 3/4 face shot. This is a fantastic camera for travel, street, landscape and portraits. Fuji made some of the best medium format rangefinders ever. I own another 645 that has a lot of automatic features and I own the Texas Leica in 6x9 in wide and medium format lenses. The image quality on all of these lenses is really first class.

    Really good information and showing about loading 120 film into the fuji gs645s wide 60. Was so glad I found you to get to know how to learn and do this. But one question is still: What do I have to when I am finished with my 15 shoots of the film? Are there things I need to pay more attention to? Or do I just have to use the film transport lever like when loading the film until it can't go any further?

    If you wear glasses and want to adapt the viewfinder, you can thread diopter adapter lenses into the eyepiece. Fuji did not supply these adapters, but referred customers to Nikon, The diopter eyepieces Nikon provided for the, FM.FE, FA series of bodies thread directly into the Fuji viewfinders. Commonly available on ebay.

  • @ghw7192

    I bought one right after they came out because I like medium format and the idea of a compact camera with a meter really appealed. First, the meter is dead-on accurate and second, the lens is quite sharp and has excellent contrast, but I found that the camera was far too delicate for my kind of shooting. I had the shutter rebuilt twice and discovered while shooting a wedding that the camera didn't like 220 film--something in the advance stripped and that had to be repaired. Luckily, I had backup cameras, but that was quite a surprise. I've thought that I might have gotten a dud and have considered getting another one, but I much prefer the 6x7 and 6x9 negative sizes and no longer have a need for a compact medium format camera. Still, it was convenient to carry and I have a lot of beautiful B&W negatives that prove the image quality. Good luck and have fun!

      ghw7192 Just wondering if you know anything about what metering uses this camera. I can't see any selector around the body so - is center spot or average ? Thanks very much :)

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 3 месяца назад

      @@eduardtoader8109 All three of the GS645 models use the same shutter, viewfinder, film advance, and exposure metering systems. (The GS645W does not use a rangefinder like the other two.) The meter is an area coverage meter, roughly equivalent to the coverage of the viewfinder. That is because the meter actually measures the light coming into the viewfinder, part of which is diverted out of the viewfinder to the meter. This also explains why the viewfinder is dimmer than most folks expect. Since the light coming into the viewfinder is used for viewing, rangefinding, and metering, the optical system involved there is quite complex.

    Honestly because of the physics of medium format for depth of field, you wouldn't likely shoot wider than 4. My GW690 has 3.5 and I avoid ever shooting that wide open. It's just narrow a DOP.

      +Garubolas Indeed it is a fully mechanical camera. All functions except the light meter will work without batteries. Even the self-timer is clockwork!

    • @DANVIIL
      @DANVIIL 7 лет назад

      My first copy had a broken meter and I left the batteries out and used Sunny 16 or an iPhone app to meter and it worked great. It's a nice way to save money if you don't mind not having a meter like most Leicas and Hasselblads. The price on the camera with a non-working meter is usually somewhat lower.
