An audiobook read by Mark F. Smith
Genre: Action & Adventure Fiction, General Fiction, Science Fiction
Edward Elmer Smith, Ph.D. (May 2, 1890 August 31, 1965) was an American food engineer (specializing in doughnut and pastry mixes) and early science fiction author, best known for the Lensman and Skylark series. He is sometimes called the father of space opera.
Triplanetary is a science fiction novel and space opera by American writer E. E. Smith. It was first serialized in the magazine Amazing Stories in 1934. After the original four novels of the Lensman series were published, Smith expanded and reworked Triplanetary into the first of two prequels for the series. The expanded Triplanetary was published in book form in 1948 by Fantasy Press. The second prequel, First Lensman, was a new original novel published in 1950 by Fantasy Press.
The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long human breeding project by the super-intelligences of the Arisians. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch-enemies, the Eddorians. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two, and Three.
The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster-than-light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, important members of the two breeding lines, are introduced.

I have read sci fi since 1959. Somehow, I missed this one. Thanks for refreshing that sense of being part of a crew that fought until they overcame or died valiantly. The friends I made in these kinds of stories helped me through the terrible teens. I feel good again!
Several other E.E. "Doc" Smith books available on librivox.
Thanks for not providing a spoiler alert, I guess I can give this one a miss.
Could you list as close to ten other cool stories as possible for us please? 🍻
Dont know why but Ive noticed many folks are first exposed to this series with Galactic Patrol, including me. I couldnt put the book down and finished it in two days. This was mid 60's and I was 13 years old. At the front of the book was a list of "other books from this author". I was totally elated and immediately checked a local used book store and found Triplanetary. I was a kid coming from Andre Norton and Hugh Walters.
Helps to be a old guy. I still have the pulps... Although they're in bad shape.
EE Doc Smith is an under rated sci-fi author. He wrote 2 space opera series: Lensmen (starting with this book) and Skylark - both are compelling. He also wrote the first 2 books in the sub space series. The second (“Encounter”) was published posthumously in 1983.
FANTASTIC!! Remember reading these books when I was 8 yrs old. So glad I found them again!!
A masterpiece book by one of the few masters of the space opera genre.
I haven't read this one in this one in 60 years now that's what I call a narrator excellent job book was a lot of fun highly recommend
This guy has the best reading voice in the business.
try audiobook Legacy fleet, it is very, very good narration and you could have any impression, there is more than one person reading all books, story is good too.
This guys is great but rc bray or brey is my personal favorite! Check out Michael Stephen Fuchs and glynn james "arisen" series if you like zombies and action. I think there are around 13 book in the series
That was an interesting journey back into the history of Sci-fi.... ;-) Thanks for that reading, it was wonderful. ;-)
Thanks very much, that was a great story, easy to listen too.
love every single second of it ! such an adventure for the ears and imagination
Loved the 1930s slang, remind me of my grandfather.
Thats awesome !
Thank you, beautiful story, excellent voice artist.
Wonderful to hear this, reminds me of why I started reading sci-fy thank you
What a beautiful and clear voice.
Great narration, fabulous job!
The entire lensmen series is amazing.
I have only read the last 2 (or 3 if you count masters of the vortex). It’s amazing!
Very gopher
Excellent reading and voice acting. Sounds as if one of the best professionals were reading. Thank you.

Good reader. This book has the wonderful sound of literary antiquity. I'm guessing the 1960's
In the description it says, 'Triplanetary is a science fiction novel and space opera by American writer E. E. Smith. It was first serialized in the magazine Amazing Stories in 1934...........The expanded Triplanetary was published in book form in 1948 by Fantasy Press''
Not scifi unless there's a ship called Hyperion.
Remember reading the Lensman series many years ago and feeling so happy an excited. Sounds a little sexiest now lol love all the EE Doc Smith Books.
The concept of sexism did not remotely exist when this was written. Tell me, are we any better off for all this feminists Mccarthyism ?
Yes, immeasurably so.
I'll listen to anything with Mark w Smith reading
damn good story - well read.
I'm literally 12 years old and I love it!
Excellent narrator

1934 book in the Buck Rogers era - space was full of ether...nuclear energy, lasers, spaceships & LCD panels had not been invented. No iron or steel is used on spacecraft - aluminum & titanium plus composite materials are used.
Good book
Dope
Good one. Girls voice sounds like Derik Zoolander.
You are right it does sound like Zoolander. ;-)
Is it just me or are you missing a few chapters at the beginning? Either way, love this series!!
I wish they would update an old book
liked it!
WTF I just purchased and read this last week. Never heard of it before. paid in cash. simply typed in "sci fi book". wierd
I am currently working for a very nice company
Completely omits the first encounter with the Edorians, the Atlantis, Fall of Rome and the World Wars 1, 2 and 3 parts of the novel despite describing them in the notes. Are the first chapters not public domain as well?
Love Doc Smith, thanks, Has any one seen the real last book in the lensman ? it was'nt the the one you can buy, I got sent a few pages and it was what happened to the Asreians and the children of the lens ? thanks leona
Classic Old Timey Cheesey SiFi... I LOVE IT. BUT If You Want Something Even Better TRY The Lost Starship Series
This sounds likes the " Shadow",
Golly - That was swell.

why is there an
other version that`s like 11 hours ?
There are a lot of books like that. A shorter version. And a long one. The long one will more than likely have the first 3 chaptera mentioning the atlantis stuff. Look up the forgotton planet. Beautiful book. Same concept. The short version has the entire "im lost adventure" that motivated the whole plot. But short version has it cut out. Because it can be said curiosity could have led to the plot as well. The main adventure if you will. Idk this book very well or i would have used it as reference. Hope this helped.
No Prime Directive in _this_ universe.

were out of rocks sir!
then use the radio dirigible torpedos
Hyperionnnn
This is not all of the book!
Goodnight my internet family

this old language, very polite behaviour, women was the women and bad guy was punished on the end..., look for the 1st Bond, Dr No, all were very polite..., fashionable :)
As our hero is describing the results of his gas attack on the city did he forget amphibian children ? By the hundreds surely
CS gas is um... er... Tear gas.
Pretty sure its Evylyne E Smith
No, it's Edward E (doc) Smith who wrote his books from the 1930s to the 1970s. Evelyn E Smith wrote from the 1950s to the 1990s.
I believe in Bob Lazar
Sol (Sun) is white, not yellow. At 4:17:35, "toward the yellowish star which they knew to be old Sol", & at 4:20:40, "The yellow star that was the Sun". Perhaps, Edward Elmer Smith, Ph.D. was writing about the Earth with its yellow Sun in the outer edge of the Sagittarius Arm (where Neil deGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan said we are located), not this Earth we are on with its white Sun on the other side of and near the galactic bulge in the middle of the Orion Spur. Even Tyson acknowledges this Earth's Sun is white, not yellow ruclips.net/video/C9MdbxPCSYw/видео.html
This book was written in 1934. Cut the author some slack.
Yes the sun looks white, but when most people look up at the sun it's during the later part of the day when you can look at the sun without being blinded and at that time it looks yellow or red during the sunset. But technically it's really green. But our eyes are very sensitive to that particular color of green. Go back and study your solar spectrum a little bit.
@@dankuchar6821 tell Neil deGrasse Tyson ;)

The sun, slowly over millions of years, will change color.
That being said, it was written in 1934.
To the author, the sun is yellow.
fyi, tyson is not INFALLIBLE.!!! he still thinks air pollution is a primary driver of climate change.!!! sol is a main sequence, yellow dwarf.!!!

ruclips.net/video/ihwoIlxHI3Q/видео.html
I've always remembered the sun being yellow when I was a child. It's only recently say mid nineties that the sun felt stronger, brighter and white. I always thought it was because of the destruction of the ozone layer. However, I've learned that the ozone has repaired itself already.
pure air? lmao
I feel sorry, but sci-fi of that era is just too bombastic.

This version sucks.
It has the FIRST 3 chapters cut out.
The whole plot about Atlantis is gone.
Listen to the 11 hour version my guy.
@@chariseyocum3169 i own it
Oh hell I would have never known if you didn't say anything!
Smith originally wrote "Triplanetary" as a stand-alone story. He later incorporated it into his "Lensman" Series.
Great narrator but I just can't get into the story
Very much of its era, especially in the gender depictions.😏🤭🙄
I hate old sci fi, horror, post apocalyps sci fi and sleepy sci fi.
Rubbish
Iron, a precious metal?! What about the two thousand types of iron alloy we call steel??!!! What about californium or an alloy of element 115 which is able to create gravity waves?!!! I wish they would update these books. It's more out of date than republicans and democrats individually!!!
weh-weh-weh without the IRON there are ZERO alloys, doofus.!!!!! i wish they would update you arrogant morons, with smarter boys, but they never do. btw, who is the THEY that we are talking about.!? googletranslate
Update a classic?
Hell no!....
Awesome writing, weak reading.
The cheesy romantic conversation I so teenaged and cringe-worthy beyond acceptable tolerance
.
This...
is not my cup of tea.
Meh
Boring!
Shameful, fucking horrible, the author had no business writing in this genre
Boring very old school
no one compelled you to listen
Of course it's old school without old school you can't develop I presume you would disparage Jules Verne
You know nothing James!
Yes Read. This has ok story, stilted dialog, and if you can get past the dated bits (all white men and one single young damsel in distress), this book has the basics for a true science fiction. A little science, a lot of spaceships, a little magic (ftl), and worthy opponents in an alien species (are they evil or is is just miscommunication?), and a human crazy mad scientist determined to rule the world. I would suggest if you like science fiction with no fantasy, then you will probably like this book. NOTE: Please someone re-write this story, and remove the young woman who has to be saved all the time! Sharpen the dialog. Mix up the crew so they are not all white men.
Or leave it alone and take it for what it is.
It was written in 1934, let it stay that way and stop rebooting things from the public domain.
What colour were the people who created the technology that got mankind into space?
Or you could shove your woke bs up your ass and stfu
rewriting all the classic great stories is part of the reason for all the sci fi rubbish being created currently
