- Baxter and Jonathan get into the best Nitro finishes of the big 3. Do you need A Nitro Finish or is Poly the right one for you!

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclips channels.
As Johnathon would say....maybe a little too much... “It’s true”.
Right on and thanks Anton for joining us!
Ditto and I’m a drummer!
The charcoal PRS at 13:30 is mine! Haha...where did you get that photo? I don’t mind you using it, of course...just curious where you found it.
Man that is awesome!!! I really don’t know:) our guy doing the edits pulls great pics and he must’ve found yours and loved it!
Casino Guitars That’s so cool....I enjoy your videos, so to just be watching along and see my guitar pop up was pretty awesome! Thanks for the reply!
I have a standard les Paul sitting in my window to try and fade it (lol) a VOS Gibby, several nitro fenders and one poly fender (acoustics excluded although Martin ain’t no shab when it comes to nitro) . The VOS nails the thin nitro IMO. Poly makes it tougher to find a good guitar. Nitro or death.
Agreed!!
Agree with the praise for the American Original series - great guitars. I have a 50’s Tele and Strat and a 60’s Strat. I am left-handed and Fender do not do the 60’s Tele as a lefty.
They're so good!
Lefty's get no love in the guitar world... I'm also a lefty guitar player.
I like these guys, but every time I watch one of their videos, I can only think of someone from Duck Dynasty talking guitars with Robert Smith of The Cure.
I'd say you pretty much nailed our formula. 😂
And that would be an awesome show.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!++!
Baxter looks like he combs his hair with dynamite
G Tedeschi Baxter likes that idea very much:)!
@@CasinoGuitars He stuck his head in some dippidy doo and let a bunch of bored chickens set his hair.
Lol I can't stop laughing... Baxter great dude .. ..
I have a nifty pair of Relic Sneakers that have that Smell you spoke of !
That’s what makes Converse so sweet! Chucks …
I don't know what they were shooting during the Cunetto era of the Fender Custom Shop, but a Nocaster I had from then had the best finish I have ever felt.
I Love Fenders also! I like the Nitro, I have a couple fenders that are, AO 50's, a Highway One, then I repaint several of my others in Nitro
Really liking your channel. You guys have great chemistry as well! I just got a new 35th Anniversary Custom 25 and the finish is so thin that I can see the finish sort of sunken down into the wood grain in places...it’s really cool
Very cool! And thanks for watching!
Man, this is a great video because I’ve been nerding out about nitro finishes for pretty much a year 😂😂 I’ve been looking into getting an American Original in hopes that within a few years of gigging it it would show some real tasty wear. Can’t decide between 60’s Strat or 60’s Tele, OR the colors!! Man, I used to work at a guitar store and the smell of Gibson is literally like nothing else.. I would buy hundreds of candles or cologne bottles.. But is it just me or do Gibsons not wear as easily as Fender? Maybe worn gibsons just arent as popular, who knows. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one, when Baxter said he gets snobby and if it’s finished in poly he doesn’t like it as much, that’s exactly me 😂😂 I also own one of the purple 50’s road worn tele’s they did last year, and I love that guitar, but now for me it’s time to also pick up a nice American nitro guitar! Just gotta choose which one.
Another fascinating discussion. You guys take care with Hurricane Sally. Just re-entering lockdown in NE England. Ho hum. More Baxter and Jonathan. More Fretbuzz. Really enjoy your channel.
Steve Smith thanks so much and we’ll keep the hatches buttoned down around here:) best to you!
I love what the custom shops of Fender/Gibson do with their nitro. Very thin and beautiful. The normal USA production seems to be too much for me but nitro is nitro and I’ll take it over poly any day
I don’t know why this video kept showing up on my feed this week but this really sums it up. I love playing my fender strat and it is so comfortable. It’s the guitar I play the most…. Nitro relic Sherwood green metallic… and plugged into a 65DRRI it’s perfection. Then I see a video like this and step to my other room with the blues jr and the 59RI 60th anniversary (yes price mid-matched) and play the best most soulful improvisational mess I have ever played IMHO all for my wife to hear through the walls. The smell of the LP and the feel…. This video does a good job of summing up the intangible nonsense of finishes, resonance, feel, and mojo…. Thanks.
Butyl-acetate is the sweet smell in nitro lacquers.!!
Really all of the acetates have a sweet smell, but butyl was found to be the best nitro thinner.
I prefer fresh shellac with a small amount of gum benzoin added, smells like vanilla.!!
Plus shellac gives a much better longer lasting finish when French polished
That is much easier to repair and last for centuries.!!
chemmii that just made me hungry reading this! And I do live French polish...! Sincere thanks for sharing!
Awesome, thanks for the info and thanks for watching!
I absolutely love my PRS. Most beautiful guitar to look at and play. I would go PRS, Fender then Gibson.
Do you have a nitro satin PRS? If so, what color?
I got the Vintera road worn 50s Strat in surf green and I love the whole thing. The look, the feel, and definitely the smell. Many features I wanted at a great price.
Fender has used nitrocellulose lacquer on their garden variety American reissues since 1982 -- that didn't just start.
I hate to be argumentive, but my 1999 Peavey Wolfgang USA made guitar is THE best smelling instrument ever. I took it to a music shop last week and without saying anything about it the employees were passing it around to smell it. Maybe it's the beeswax finished neck, but it's seriously aromatic. My gibson are in a distant 2nd place in the smell category.
I've been in love with all the big three. Have had srats, Les Pauls, MIII, 335, and P.R.S Custom. All American made.
Currently I'm thinking my P.R.S is my go to right now. Ah, but it has the dreaded poly finish. You know it get sticky sometimes and it might feel like it's hindering your playing. All you need to do (besides sanding the neck a little to make it smooth, and making it ugly, I'm not a relic man, I am a relic so I like my guitar as new looking as possible. Only my humble opinion) ther is a product I have been using for decades, and it takes care of the poly problem. It's a spray for your strings so they don't rust, and it make playing more enjoyable, spray a tiny amount on the nut and you'll find you stay in tune much longer, ofcourse lightly spray the strings and the back of the neck. Now it couldn't be faster, I don't care that's a fact. I've been using this product for decades. It will not harm your guitar and for me it's a must.
If you never tried it, do yourself a favor, in any music store. Finger ease, could very well change your life, it did mine..
Have a great day, stay safe.
My 1988 PRS CE24 with maple neck is now 34 years old. The fretboard has that classic worn look that you get with maple necks. The body has a few dents, some paint chips popped off around the edges of the body (I think from wood shrink & expand pressure), and finish wear on the top edge where my picking arm rubs on the body. It looks aged, well played, but for the most part the finish is as good as day one. It's still a gorgeous blue that I've never seen since. That being said, I love the look of the nitro finish on old Fenders and Gibsons. It's all good.
You have to check out the Fender CS GT11. Sweetwater exclusive with so many great specs - flame roasted neck/body amazingly light & beautiful NOS flash coat.
1-prs, 2-fender, 3-gibson. In terms of nitro finishes. i built a partscaster with a nitro body, preloaded ppickguard, and a roasted neck, best freakin purchase i ever made. Now my own relic is starting to show after a year, its like an evolving piece of art. WHereas my poly shredders, they look like I just bought them which is also cool... but there's something about nitro and your own wear from playing that is very cool
You guys are fun to watch, and- I learn things when I watch your show. Please keep up the good work! 💜
Thanks so much! And thanks for watching.
We need a Nitro Fragrance for Guitar Players. Smell like an opening new Gibson case!! I would prefer a reliced Gibson then a Fender. Not too excited about PRS guitars (without a good reason).
Oliver Amberg agreed! I think we’d all be in line for that fragrance! And sincere thanks for sharing your thoughts on the guitars as well!
I have kids and their Play Doh has the same smell, I think we may be on our way to creating a new fragrence for men.
@@CasinoGuitarscan I get a body wash 🧴 please
This is possibly the most informative and useful video you've done. I love learning about Fender Custom's flash coat...that's exactly what I want.
I like nitrocellulose lacquer as much as the next guy... but don't give me that 'breath' nonsense. :D
I love nitro finishes and the Gibson smell is amazing! I owned a Gibson and it was nearly impossible to not smell it every time I took it out. The older PRS nitro is absolutely gorgeous even years later and the feel is perfect as it's not tacky at all. Personally though I prefer the way Fender's nitro ages so perfectly. I too hope the new PRS finishes will get some of that aging because then it could be the best at everything, except maybe smell.
Enjoyed listening to you guys with my morning coffee.
So should I be considering guitar aroma before my next purchase? It's already so difficult to choose!
They gotta have the smell!! Thanks for watching! 😊
PRS hands down. You will never see a company obsess over the composition and thickness consistency of their finish like Paul does, and you will never find a single flaw in their finishes no matter how many you look at.
I'm not sure how Fender is even in the running.
Literally the custom shop is the only thing that keeps them in the running and their pre cbs vintage guitar
I own 3 prs, a collings, and multiple gibsons and fenders- the Fender EJ Virginia first run had an absolutely flawless lacquer finish. I spent days looking for a flaw and couldn’t find one. I know they’re not all like that.
The Eric Johnson Stratocasters have nitro finish. I got mine brand new for $1500. A steal for basically a 60s strat of 2 piece body and 1 piece neck
I like em all. I like the Fenders though.
I just got a 2005 American Tele with a RW fretboard and a nitro finish. It isn't a custom shop and I looked it up, as I never heard of that before. Turns out that it is real. IDK how many they did that way but I love the guitar!
I spent my whole life in a finishing room so I don't really like the smell of any finish...
I have Wildwood 10 Fender CS relic ready 62 Tele and it’s awesome, waiting for relic ready 61 ultralight Strat and I’m hoping it will be even better. I’ll be paying them off for the next two years but you have to be in debt for something right? Great video as always guys!
I’ve been on the verge for a while now of accepting some debt for a custom shop. Lol haven’t pulled the trigger yet
I was walking through the grocery store one day, when I suddenly became aware of the "Gibson smell". I stopped for a moment and realized that I was standing in the baking aisle... near the vanilla extracts.
Surge LaChance that’s an awesome comment and experience!!! What a great moment for all guitar lovers, thanks for sharing that!
Surge LaChance the next thing I would have done is take out my air guitar and play Eat It by Weird Al 😆
When you get the chance, smell a PRS hard case.
My firebird case is 7 years old still smells of that "vanilla" oh its so nice. My hardshell case from prs reminds me high-school band instruments
@@nascar2943 Don't get angry but you don't lie to promote Gibson and make fun of PRS.
I've had 2 Gibson hard cases a 335 Traditional and a Les Paul Special and they smelled good. And while looking for a PRS that I liked I had 3 PRS hard cases a Custom 24, a 594 McCarty and a Paul's guitar they smelled good too. None of them smelled like a student instrument case and I carried trombone cases for 10 years.
On the partscasters I've built from unfinished bodies I've sprayed both nitro and polyurethane. I kind of like the polyurethane the best, since it isn't super thick and hard like a polyester finish on cheap guitar but it will protect things like a hydro-dip and other artsy designs well. And, I don't have to worry as much about accidental relicing due to a reaction with a stand or case.
I bought a Martin 000-28 new in 2006 , and the first thing I did when I opened the case was inhale the scent . The smell of the Nitro and the Spanish Cedar perfling was intoxicating . 14 years later , it still has that aroma . I never take it out of the house and I keep it stored in its case .
Would love to see a video about acoustic finishes. Martin Taylor and Gibson
I want that Shell Pink Tele so bad!!
Fender custom shop for the win. I love my Journeyman Clapton!!
Poly isn’t always thick
I was thinking the same thing. I had an LP with the thickest finish (literally almost couldn’t make out the serial number) and my tele has a lovely poly finish. Both guitars sounded great and resonated just fine. I don’t believe the finish has as much of an impact on solid body guitars as other factors like nut material, strings and pickups. The aesthetics and feeling of aged nitro is legit but again, probably the last thing that actually matters on a guitar for me.
Just got a fender thin skin nitro strat Dave s guitars in Wisconsin spec avri 62 its awesome
I have a nitro 59 AmVint Strat thin skin, a Gibson SG Standard, and a VOS R9 as my only nitro guitars. And honestly, the Fender nitro doesn't feel that much different from my poly Strats. But the R9 and SG feels different from the rest. They feel special to play, and I only get a little of that from the Fender nitro.
Can't say I like nitro as a coating but then again I dont mind putting wear on my neck because it shows my hours of playing/practice but I want the body and headstock to look good forever.
Yeah, My Gibsons do have that nice smell when you open the case. I'm not sure if I want another one though.
Great question! I'd say Gibson, prs, fender
I recently bought the PRS SE Silver Sky and I'm amazed how good it feels, I had a few poly finish Fenders before but this is soooo much softer and less sticky, PRS is a master at proper poly finish. Nitro finish is hard to decide who is better, maybe I prefer Gibson, Fender feels a bit more fragile.
I have a PRS with a satin finish, haven’t had it long enough to see how it ages.
7:11 Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab should do a vintage Gibson scent line. They already have stuff like graveyard dirt and leathery tobacco mixed with sadness and vampire pheromones. Also, old gear smell takes me right back to being like 4 or 5 yrs old in the late 70s/early 80s and hanging out in my uncle's recording studio. So killer.
I think Ibanez makes the bets guitars out there. I have a custom shop strat, a custom shop 339 and a prs DGT but it’s my Ibanez EGEN 18 and my MIJ Sabre that are my go-to’s
Is the road worn nitro finish on a Mexican Fender a new thing? I have a 2018 road worn Tele in metallic purple, and that sure seems like a nitro finish to me. It certainly feels more resonant in my hand.
All of the Mexican made Roadworns have nitro finishes. I own two of them a 2011 and a 2017. Occasionally there have been other non Roadworn Mexican models with nitro finishes.
I have an MJT nitro Tele that is awesome, and a Johnny Marr Jaguar that is nitro and I love it. But my Gibsons are just so good. I’m going Gibson.
Nothing better than the Gibson smell. My friends and girlfriend thought I was nuts until they finally smelled my Gibsons for the first time. Sadly after a few years the smell goes away
They should make a body wash
@@jambajoby32 agreed
I just picked up a new Vintera strat but I don't think its a Nitro finish. Very glossy
It’s a polyester nitro
First, let me say that I’ve watched quite a few of your videos, and you’re definitely one of my top five favorite channels. Keep up the great work and content. I like that you’re different from a lot of the mockingbird channels.
Second, I just bought a Fender Original 50s and it’s absolutely beautiful and amazing! A real dream guitar realized.
Third, if I do buy another guitar (and who am I kidding? I definitely will!), I want to ride up to NC and buy one from Casino. Love y’all and take care!
New Martins have 'that ' scent .. I think it's the Spanish Cedar perfling that is so fragrant .
I've stripped Gibsons and fenders. It took me an hour to strip an SG. It took me a week to strip a Telecaster. Every layer was a different kind of paint on the fender.
I used to be a massive nitro fanboy, but I've realized you can finish a guitar well with poly without any tonal difference. I wish Gibson would start a line of more affordable guitars in poly. I'd be highly interested in purchasing that.
Or in old man car talk: Some prefer a 4 barrel carb and some prefer fuel injection. They both work. I agree with you. And, some people can't afford the additional cost of a nitro finish. I can, but not everyone can afford the more expensive toys...
They already do. They're called Epiphone.
@@endorphinstudios2023 it's a completely different guitar. Not accurate to the real thing at all. From the actual scale length to the tone woods-it's all wrong.
Some people get the "breathing"to literally while actually its term to describe that the wood with nitro contracts and expands more freely in contrast with the poly !
So many people triggered in the comments over that. Lol. The wood type, finish differences, fingerboard materials, etc, conversation really seems to anger a sector of guitar players for some reason.
Most Enjoyable. Thanks
Did y’all see the Silver Sky that someone Relic’d? I think Zach Meyers of Shinedown also Relic’d a silver sky
That triple humbucker custom on the wall😍😍😍
I always compared my SG Standard vanilla like smell to baby powder lol, it’s 10 years old now but the case still has it..
Fantastic video❗️❕❗️
Great video, as always! Want to start a bar fight in a Gibson forum? Discuss binding bleed on a True Historic made with aniline dye!
Haha! Sounds like a good time. 😂
Are you sure PRS is a member of the "Big Three"? ESP with all its sub brands (Ltd, Edwards, Schecter, etc.) probably sells more.
Will chipped poly allow the guitar body wood to breathe like a nitro finish? Is that a thing?
I have a strat that had some bad drips in the finish. I hated them and picked at them till they chipped off. It does look a bit like a bad relic attempt but is still better looking IMO than drippy.
What a fantastic topic+
Mark Homiak thank you sincerely!
Hmmm.... what about Gibson's satin nitro finish? I have a LP tribute and two basses from Gibson that have a satin finish. I LOVE the feeling of the satin for playing, but I am paranoid about how it's gonna age since it's so thin, and was hoping you guys would have commented on that.
I understand the Silver Sky has that new PRS finish technique? They need a name for it, maybe hybrid finish?
I think prs always cause they just try to always IMPROVE and make them more amazing as possible and paul is super keen on perfecting things like a mad scientist and not only that they just really focus so much on making the guitar wood as cooked as possible and completely perfect and everything about prs it's the guitar worlds current innovation and excitement.
Also nitro isnt better then others, it's just an older finish material used, it's not gonna sound BETTER eith it or when it cracks and all that stuff
PRS V12 still amazing I love it OVER nitro it is just nitro with poly hardness
And prs obsesses so much about composition and what's in the finish and how much goes into what inside the finish and finish thickness and making it just PERFECT as possible and how much the colour pops LIKE POPS with prs finishes they're legit perfection, no gibson can make a flamed top pop like prs does, they legit are just the flame popping out! And Gibsons always feel like you see finish OVER the flamed top 🙄👎
Well said about PRS
Is the fender original still going to wear like a nitro finish even though it has a poly undercoat??
We have actually run that experiment with one and in short...yes:) We beat the hell out of one, played it, put it in bad climate and she is checking like a champ. We even flash froze a small section to see what would happen to the undercoat...we may have gone a bit far there:(
The 70th anniversary Esquire has the best best nitro-case-wood smell ever. You get that hide glue, nitro smell AND PINE! It's heaven. And the guitar is amazing, too!
That black strat with the 70’s headstock all the way to the left of the screen at 7:41 ... is it available at your store? If not where?
Me: this is so tasty, what's in it Baxter?
Baxter: Organic resonance, with a slight hint of vanilla aroma in the nitro.
Donny Hall you kinda nailed me there:)
😂
The American original line does not have custom shop pickups.
That is correct! They sure do sound amazing though:)
I have a 2004 Gibson SG Special Platinum it's made in USA and I don't think it is a nitro finish. Can anyone help me out on this one?
It looks like a poly finish to me but I just got it and haven't spent much time with it. it needs a lot of tlc to bring back to life and I am waiting for parts to arrive to fix it up. The Sunset orange finish looks awesome! Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks
Gibson Vanilla, that should be a Febreez option for your car
Yes please:)
I still don't understand why people want nitro finish guitars. I have poly finish guitars 20 yrs old and they look brand new still. I don't get it
Thats why I bought 1 nitro Strat. Because it will age and wear as I own it for the next few decades. My poly guitars will look new, and I like that too. Also nitro has a different feel that I find inspiring. Sort of like a vinyl jacket vs a leather jacket. The vinyl might look the same forever and be more cost effective and efficient, but the leather feels more luxurious and will break in and wear with time.
I agree. You don’t get it. And that’s perfectly fine by the way. If it’s not for you it’s not for you.
nitro might be very allright however in absence of nitro just use duplicolor clear. .the wood has to 'breathe' enough to be itself yet repel greasy stains. .and that's all there is
I would have to disagree with you on Gibson's finishes. Since I own vintage gibsons and the new ones I would think that the nitro finishes have changed drastically on gibsons. For one thing Gibson has done a terrible job smoothing their finishes out and Orange peel seems to be a huge issue with newer gibson's. As far as that sweet smell that is plastaside that is added to the nitro And the older instruments do not smell like that nor do they feel so sticky and so soft. Sadly this does not seem to wear off and I have gotten rid of quite a few new gibsons because I could not work with the sticky finishes. I have an Eric Johnson stratocaster And I do like the finish on that instrument. It does not display the sticky characteristics of the Gibson finish and is much smoother and without Orange peel. I recently purchased a David Grissom PRS with the new finish and so far so good although the poly finishes were fine as they were very thin. It will be interesting to see over the next few years if PRS sticks with the nitro over cellulose finish. I guess only time will tell.
I don’t think Vintera guitars have nitro😔what a bummer. Oops sorry didn’t hear the part about road worn. Now I want one
great topic!
Prs…It’s a smooth thin finish that lets the guitar breath
American originals + new AVii’s are polyester nitro
Their roadworn ones I believe are a true nitro where the bare wood is nearly exposed
all of fenders road worn stuff is made in mexico and has a nitro finish. It used to be a regular run but now its only special editions.
All Roadworn Fenders are made in Mexico, but they DO NOT have a poly finish.
I have a 2008 roadworn 60’s strat MIM and I am sure it is nitro
@@charlesbolton8471 idk why i put poly instead of nitro. i have updated it. ty for pointing out my mistake
Loved how my original 60s tele smelled when I first got it. Now the smell is lingering away.......
Bryan Vazquez noooooo! Just let her live in that case for a bit and maybe some of that case vacuum will help bring it back:)
So basically.....my Les Paul Tribute is in fact Nitro, even though it's the thinnest satin finish....but in fact, it "breathes", and has therefore more resonance than any of the high ranges.
i think MJT has the best relic finishes out there. Better than anything fender custom shop is putting out.
Id be interested to see what they do with a Gibson
Gibson needs to make a nitro/hide glue perfume for the ladies!
Not that I think there is a 'best' - its personal preference and 'pros and cons' to each - therefore a Pro for one (like aging/relicing over time) could be a Con for another...
At least this video goes into the fact that not ALL Nitro is the same - just like not all Poly is the same. Every company has their own formula and formulas also change over time too. It annoys me when people categorise all Nitro or all poly finishes in the same bracket. Extremely thin Poly (like PRS used) is vastly different from the thick Poly finishes on 'cheap' guitars.
Great point! Thanks for watching.
Nitro coating is not expensive, what is the catch, why don't all manufacturers use it.
What about CF Martin?!?!
I had herd that only a few states will allow the use of nitrocellulose lacquer in the manufacturing process. Allegedly the fender guitars that have nitro finishes are actually finished in Mexico. Does anyone know the truth behind this?? It would be a reasonable reason why Fender and PRS uses poly, Music Man... Poly, Kiesel guitars.... poly, Rickenbacker.... I thought was poly. Any thoughts??
Does anyone know if this is true??
First, yes the use of nitrocellulose lacquer is regulated at the state level. However, I don’t believe that it is banned from use in any state yet.
Second, Fender definitively uses nitro in the Custom Shop in California so I doubt that US made non Custom Shop models with nitro finishes are done in Mexico. However, it is possible since all amp cabinets are made in Mexico as are all non Custom Shop guitar/bass necks.
charles bolton
Thanks for your reply and I’m sure you are closer to the truth than I am. It is conceivable that California would ban nitro. I’m sure it’s on there list. Lol. I love a nitrocellulose finish and I would think a lot players prefer it, I guess!! It is interesting, the makers in California seem to all use a form of poly and lets face it, California has some fantastic guitar manufacturers.
Oh well, it will be interesting to follow. Thanks Charles for the information, good stuff.
if one could buy a Gibson, collect the air upon opening, put it through a mass spect, develop a perfume ... and you own the patent .. think it would sell? (probably being done in some lab)
Lol...nitrocellulose has little smell at all and surely not a sweet smell that is the butyl acetate they thin the nitro with that smells very much like vanilla.
Being an evaporative part of the finish, it gasses off
Over a longer period of time...but eventually ....
The smell becomes non existant. It is definitely at it's strongest gassing off in the first few months of its application.!!
@1:58 Jimmy Buffet?
PRS just doesn’t excite me. I guess I’m a bad person cuz I don’t cream my jeans over a guitars top, but Gibson’s nitro smell just has me feeling some kind of way.
Yeah, that whole “breathing” thing...
bs.
You are correct. Nitro does NOT breath! And any finish is only as thick as you put it on. PRS's poly is just as thin as nitro. Plus Gibby in their "nitro" now on custom shop guitars has so many "plasticisers" in it it's nothing like the old stuff. When I run my hand up n down the neck of my R8 (2007) I get static like from a strat pickguard.
Polly gets sticky on stage. You want a cool alternative to nitro? Go get an Earl Slick guitar and lightly polish it with lemon oil. Easy peasy.
