20-day old worm bin's second feeding - red wiggler worm farm vermicomposting

- After adding three loads of red wigglers I estimate the population of this 20-day old bin to be approx 3000 worms. To keep all those hungry mouths busy I apply a generous 2nd feeding. The previous feeding was 10 days ago

LOL they are HUNGRY!!
That's a good thing! :)
Bro has crazy forearms
Fascinating..... I am now going to use a plastic covering. I think it will increase the quality of my one bin. I am going to cut it from one of the many shopping bags that the groceries are hauled home with weekly. It makes me happy to Repurpose them and increase quality of life for my 🪱 Worms.
I Emjoy your Videos.... Thank-you!
Plastic shopping bag here in New Jersey have been eliminated - people need to bring their own bags when they go shopping. Anyhow... good luck with the new coverings and thanks for watching!
Great video AV. I have started 2 more bins very shallow to see how they work so far they are doing great.
Took another 100 wisps...just old enough to color up ...from bed of castings brought up almost 2 months ago . And yes 100 in a teaspoon..lol the eggs are still hatching. Got plenty of time to search now.
That paper that you found bits in the center of your bin was a coffee filter you put there to mark where you fed last. I guess they ate most of it.
You are very organized and your basement so clean and neat! 👍🏻
Why not blend and freeze or freeze and blend and pour? When I had a 6x3 Flowthru I usually blended everything so the worms would process it quicker, did that with eggshells too but burned a lot of motors (coffee grinder) lol.
I occasionally blend - but more often I prefer to just put in their food without having to prep it too much for them. Thanks for watching!
Someone mentioned online bread are no good to feed the worms? But then they make worm feed with oats and corn... now I’m confused...
I don't feed bread very often. From the few time I have though I don't recall it ever causing a problem. Thanks for watching!
For small scale growers, if grows are inside, grains with cellulose ( paper/cardboard) and a well composed material will insure the best pest control and eliminates any disagreeing odors. If outside, adding food scraps, manures, etc. are no problems.
Great vid. Is there any benefit of freezing kitchen scraps or is that for convenience?
Both! Freezing ruptures the cell walls of the material - making it easier for microbes and bacteria to infiltrate and start the breakdown process after it thaws. It also helps preserve things till you're ready to feed them to the worms. Thanks for watching!
This is the most ive seen in a bin like that.
Thank you for the videos. I am learning a lot but I do have a question about the other bugs I have found. I have red and white mites what can I do to get rid of them or are they ok to have in my bins?
When I once had them in great numbers I did everything I could to get rid of them. I reduced the food supply, I reduced the moisture - I even applied some diatomaceous earth. Their number subsided and I was glad - but more recently when I see them I don't give it a second thought. I just see them as helpers in the bin. Its cool as long as they stay within the bin - and they do. Luckily controlling them is pretty easy if you find that they are really appearing in large numbers. Thanks for watching!
How do you manage to keep enough air flow with the plastic covering? Is weekly airing the top enough while feeding?
I have never noticed any issues with the plastic coverings. They must be getting sufficient air somehow. Thanks for watching!
What is the size of your bins.
How deep they are.
Which breeding worms do you use.
These are approx 20" x 15" x 7" deep - I have a variety of worms including red wigglers, European nightcrawlers, African nightcrawlers & most recently I got some blue worms. Thanks for watching!
what was the white powder grid? crid?
The grit that I use is pulverized egg shell. Thank you for watching!
@@A-V thank you; was very interesting and instructive
Thanks for another great video, I’ve used your plastic bag method it works a treat. I have a question, with so many worms will they still multiply? Or will they regulate? Cheers
I don't know what to expect. I don't even know how I would be able to monitor it. Lately I heard that the telltale for when worms slow their reproduction is the disappearance of their clitellum (that bulging section on their body). I'll have to keep an eye out for signs of it happening. Thanks for watching!
That is not other paper. That is the paper that was rotted out of the top paper. The color changed from being wet and in contact with the media.
Thank you - and thanks for watching!
I'm loving your videos!
How's the smell when you're digging around in there? I want to set a bin up but I'm afraid my SO would object to the scent...
Foul odors only occur when something is going awry in the bin.. otherwise, the smell of the typical worm bin is fresh & earthy. There's nothing to fear - go for it. Thanks for watching!
@@A-V sweet! Thanks for the reply :)
How are harvesting the worm tea?
I don't collect drippings. Thanks for watching!
🇹🇷👍👍
My Euros usually don't eat much of the top paper layers or leaves unless they've devoured all fruits n veggies an decide I havent fed them as much or as frequent as their little fat selves should have been. 😅 Don't mean that as if you are doing anything wrong brother, hope i didnt come off like i was. I'm ah learner not a teacher or a prick(I hope). Hope your lil employees are helping keep your boredom down to a minimum during these trying an crazy quarantine times. ✌
Do you have canadian night crawlers? They are very big and I rarely see people raise them 🤷🏼♂️and thanks for the video 👍🏻
The nightcrawlers that I have are supposedly European & African.. although some of my viewers are skeptical about whether my ANCs are actually what I was told they are. Thanks for watching!
Do you have problems with gnats/flies
I see them once in a while but luckily it has been manageable lately. Over the summer I had many of them in my VermiBag Mini... but they seem to have finally - for the most part - vanished. Thanks for watching!
U need to use a bigger bin that many in one bin they will eventually start dying
Wow , so many worms in one bin. How many do you usually start a bin that size with?
Out of curiosity I went though my records to try figuring this out.. and luckily I have fairly meticulous notes on all my worm bin work - so it was fairly easy to see that the population of that bin was the result of three separate releases of worms. And even though I have no counts or measurements of the quantities, I do have video showing it all. So if you are up for it, then I invite you to check out those three additions of worms into the bin. Those videos can be watched here: #1 ruclips.net/video/gdQevG4mkNo/видео.html , #2 ruclips.net/video/ooD_9-QN5bY/видео.html , & #3 ruclips.net/video/vS8inrQOfkA/видео.html . It just so happens that the third release of worms is from the 3-chamber carbon-only worm bin in which I filmed my channel's most watched time-lapse video. If you have not yet seen that video, then I invite you to check that out too; it can be seen here: ruclips.net/video/McQYDcqc0Nk/видео.html Thank you for watching!
What temperature do the worms need to stay at?
The red wigglers, like what are shown in this video, can tolerate a fairly wide range of temperatures. In fact, I have a system outside in which the red wigglers manage to survive the deep freeze of the winter quite easily. Other types, such as the African nightcrawlers, are a tropical worm which has trouble with temperatures below 50° F. Thanks for watching!
Can they eat sea weed from the beach ? Love the work your doing
Naturally all salt would need to be cleansed from it first - then sure, it could be used. Thanks for watching!
SUBSCRIBED :)
Will the worm tea help with my marijuana farm?
I do not collect drippings from my bins... nor do I brew worm tea from my castings. So I myself have no experience with it. Perhaps someone else reading this will chime in to explain the pros & cons of using it. Thanks for watching!
Oh, yeah.
Great for any plant.
This is a big overkill. I just do it raw, as it happens in nature.
It's all good as far as the worms are concerned :)
Why don’t your worms try and escape
Since I have no lids on my bins, I never get any condensation collecting on the walls. I submit that the worms are drawn to the moisture that collects on the walls & the lid of a covered bin. That is just my theory - I could be wrong. Thanks for watching!
@@A-V thanks. I’m learning a lot from you
