Agreed. I wish they'd make it mandatory for the DRL to go out on whichever side the turn signal is blinking. I think they're more visible to others when they don't have to compete with a DRL. I'm not sure if that would be such a great thing at night though. 😋
@@ElroyMcDuff Just about every vehicle with DRL LED lights will shut off and then do just the amber. I did see a 2023 or very new GMC Sierra not do it. The law simply states that if your DRL is brighter than the signal, it has to turn off. But that amber light was very bright so they probably did it that way.
@@sprockkets It does seem to be pretty common but it's not 100% mandatory, that's all I was getting at. The turn signal is MUCH more visible when it doesn't have to compete with another light. I agree with Alex re: amber turn signals in the rear. I think they're move visible when they're not just flashing the same color as the brake lights.
They are higher cost. The only reason this model is somewhat affordable is because of it's size. It's tiny. The EV version of their XC90, for example, will be crazy expensive.
That’s what happens when it’s owned by a Chinese company. There could be lots of cheap EV’s in the states if they were manufactured in China. But, I’m not a fan of filling China’s coffers as things are now, so they can keep them.
@@LifeAfterLosing A lot of people put things on Geely regarding Volvo that aren't really correct. Volvo has had other relatively inexpensive cars available in the USA, like the C30. The C30 was developed when Volvo was owned by Ford. It's more Volvo is an acquired brand of a bigger company and they can share costs but that company could be German or Stellantis (French/Italian) and Volvo still would be able to come out with this car. Overall, Volvos are getting considerably more expensive. Bigger Volvos are going up in price.
As a 2020 Bolt owner, I pre-ordered the EX30 because Chevrolet was discontinuing the Bolt. Now that they've announced a reintroduction of the Bolt, I may reconsider my pre-order. I'll keep it for now until we see the timetable, features, design, and pricing of the Bolt. I'm happy to keep my current Bolt another year. Despite its slow DCFC charge curve, it's still a terrific EV.
It may just be me, however, they are turning the plant that make the bolt into a Chevrolet Silverado production . I would not look for a new Bolt in under three years minimum. It's ironic as it is the only electric car they currently build at any type of scale.
Despite the usual ignorance by some commenters who are mistakenly calling this Volvo car "Chinese," it's great to see Volvo keep a certain continuity of design/content in their generations of cars. If you're familiar with the generations of Volvos, you can see how they mature and evolve but usually carry over some element of the previous generation. Put this car next to an XC40 and you can see the evolution of this design from the XC40. Inside, the dashboard, though deleting the instrument display, has the same layout of the XC40 but it is modernized. The materials are now more varied and interesting. There's more color in the interior rather than the rather charcoal, dark appearance in the XC40. The door panels have been simplified and modernized. The trash bin is in a new place but still there. The EX90 also has many design cues from the XC90 but it is more modernized, streamlined, and quite Scandinavian minimalistic like Volvos have been for decades. There is no Geely design in this car whatsoever. There is a Geely platform. And about that "Geely" platform, Geely "plucked" a Swedish engineer by the name of Kent Ove Bovellan to do the chief engineering of that platform. So, even Geely has a lot of Swedish content in their cars. Buying the European brands helped Geely get some great tech. But they haven't dissolved the Euro brands, Lotus and Volvo, they've actually enhanced and expanded them. The brands still do the design, most engineering, road testing, crash testing where they always have in their respective countries. So no, these aren't Geely cars with Volvo or Polestar or Lotus badges slapped on them. Of course there is cost and tech sharing, but each brand has the autonomy to do their own thing and have the ability to share resources to cut cost. That makes them more international than Chinese, though yes, Geely's funding is through China as it is based in China. Anyway, Volvo did a good job with this car with two exceptions. They didn't need to delete the instrument panel nor did they need to delete the buttons for the rear window switches. Otherwise, this is a very Volvo car in the tradition of Volvo yet modernized to move the company forward. It'll be somewhat affordable as an entry point to Volvo.
As an industrial design I'm a big fan of this interior. The exterior is great too. The proportions are a bit stout to be sure, but that can't be avoided in the 2020's. This could be my first EV. Very appealing size, price and design. Also, the wool seats are awesome. Mini did wool seats for a while and they were amazing.
how about controlling the AC using the touchscreen? isn't it inefficient, distracting, and could be dangerous. curious the designer's thinking on this. Thanks
@@smtry6541not a problem at all! Everyone says those things, I think only because every reviewer always comments about it. Living with it everyday is no problem whatsoever.
@@smtry6541 It's a Chinese car, but it was designed and kitted out by Volvo in Sweden. I trust you'll not have to mess with it more than two, three times a year if set to auto. So not really an issue. In fact, I have an Ioniq 5 which has a bunch of buttons and separate AC controls. They are somewhat useful, but tbh I rarely use them. The car does almost everything by itself, lights, wipers, AC, seat heater/ventilation, heated steering wheel, everything. And it does it well. On the motorway it even accelerates/decelerates if the speed limit changes, it keeps save distance, brakes, even steers itself. The few things I want or need to do myself can be done from buttons on the steering wheel. Car reviewers always mess about in the infotainment. In reality you sit in a car like this for halve a day to set everything up when you first get the car, then fine-tune a bit for the first two, three weeks and after that you're done, if the system is any good. I get in my car, put it into Drive, done. If I want to navigate somewhere I push a button on the steering wheel and tell it "navigate to XY," done. It even plans the charging stops if need be. Cars have gotten really good, EVs in particular.
I wished Volvo had included at least a small instrument display on the driver's side (e.g. similar to VW's ID.4 instrument display) instead of following Tesla with the single large touchscreen on the middle console. Are the buttons on the steering wheel capacitive as well? Backlighted? The EX30, as I understand, is a twin and shares the same platform to the Zeekr X and the Zeekr X does have a driver's instrument cluster.
I put my deposit down on the first day they were taking orders. I'm really looking forward to this car. I already have a Volvo C40 and a Mach-e. The glass roof gets a lot of hate, but it's not a problem at all even in 110 degree Texas heat.
My problem with the glass roof is on one hand, I think they're just ugly, and useless to me. But on the practical side, in some US states, glass rooftops and larger sunroofs are causing insurance rates to climb by 35-45% due to increased hailstorms destroying them. Some smaller insurance companies are no longer covering them at all in portions of Montana. I do hope they offer a solid roof variant.
@@wildonion99they won’t because of the extra headroom and perceived spaciousness but I AGREE WITH YOU, I too prefer a solid roof like on my EV6. It also stays cooler in summers
@@wildonion99Solid roof variant on the Core and Plus edition. I chose the Plus and won’t miss the glass roof on our current C40. So looking forward to this car!
Not having shorter range LFP battery in USA may be a dealbreaker for me. I don’t need the extra range I’d rather use money to upgrade to a higher spec.
Really nice release from Volvo! I love the interior design choices and all of the small functional items that get overlooked like the stowable cargo cover.
Great choice to get an EX30. Given the glut of TVs on the market now, Volvo realizes that the days of overinflated EV prices are over, and this is the player they bring to the new game.
@@diverseeko Could be but my VW Golf also has a heavily tinted moon roof and if the sun is overhead I get enough glare in my eye that I keep the shade extended at all times.
You didn’t mention the dash mounted speaker bar. This eliminates door speakers and their associated cost and complexity. Same with the console mounted window switches. The doors now only have handles and windows, this saves on costs of copper and manufacturing. One reason they can hit the 35K cost. And still look good!
You have to select a cheaper trim, though - Core and Plus is without panorama roof. You will lose some other features also (360 camera, better parking assist ++). Some interior designs are available only with a specific trim, can't remember what combinations are available.
We don’t know if it will be optional in all trims or become standard at some point but I agree, I’m not a big fan or the glass that doesn’t have a shade.
Geely isn't in the USA. This is still a Volvo. Geely isn't behind much in this car other than the platform and some of the associated things with that platform. All of that industrial design and materials chosen and their sustainability is signature Volvo as well as the safety properties of this car. Those Volvo safety features can then go to other brands in the Geely Group.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Which is why Volvo is still the powerhouse of the organisation. They specifically bought Volvo for their engineering prowess and competencies regarding quality assurance, supply chain, manufacturing and so on. Geely brings the investment money, Volvo brings the tech, innovation and engineering. Most of these platforms were developed with Volvo engineers and Volvo technology as well. It's a win-win partnership were Volvo engineers get to do what they want, and Geely gets access to the western competencies and technologies that simply do not exist naturally in China, given their shorter history of auto manufacturing.
Geely is in the American market in the same manner that GM, Ford, Stellantis and Volkswagen are in the American market. Volvo vehicles are based on Geely platforms. Have fun pretending that Chinese automotive companies need anything from the west. When the exact opposite is true.
I, too, did a reservation for one. Never would have expected a Volvo to fall in my price range. I was holding out to see what the released Equinox EV was going to bring, or I was going to grab a hybrid. Not now!
@@Carfan678 Agreed, but that did nothing for Tesla's sales. In a way, Tesla could afford to go for halo car given where the BEV market was when the X came out. I have a pre order for the base model. My 5.5 year old 36 kWh e-Golf is still a great car, with 60,000 miles on the odometer, so I've given Volvo a short term loan of $500 for now - this seems about the same size as my e-Golf, but has more than double the range and almost 4x the DCFC speed. My wife drives a 2022 XC40 Recharge, purchased used, that we really like, even though it is inefficient. I think I could get used to the lack of driver binnacle. I wonder if heated seats, steering wheel, and driver seat lumbar adjustment will be included on the base model.
I like most of it, but that flecked plastic looks like rustoleum garage floor epoxy paint. Doesn't exactly scream high end. I also think that if they're going to ditch a dashboard display for the driver, it should have a HUD for the driver. Can this be had without the glass roof? I can't find out on their site if that's an option or if the glass roof is the only way it's made.
It's one trim "room." You don't have to choose it. There are two other options than the speckled trim. I think Volvo made a mistake in not offering a display behind the wheel. It something people will talk about vs. putting out a nice industrial design without that "controversy." Also, they could have offered 4, rather than 2, window switches. Not sure about the glass roof.
@@benjaminsmith2287 The two window switches is an odd choice, because it's still actually 3 switches, and more complicated and prone to failure than just putting in 4 basic switches.
Model 3 isn’t a crossover so for folks looking for a hatch its not going to be a competitor, but simply as an affordable EV the Model 3 is stellar. Pricing will depend on your tax situation as you have to have a minimum $7500 tax liability and be within the income ranges. According to some independent studies, that excludes a decent portion of shoppers from getting the whole thing. Leasing either will get the credit however which is likely why leasing accounts for a large percentage of “purchases”
Alex great hands on with the EX30, thank you, keep up the great work. 17:55 I wouldnt say the EX30 is luxurious however, with the cheaped out interior, no roof shade, no air suspension, and the B&W audio is not an option to my knowledge. I would be looking at other options say from Audi and BMW for a smaller luxury suv.
Great video as always, Alex! I think Volvo is doing some very interesting stuff with these new models, but I'm confused about a few design decisions, notably the lack of overhead grab handles, no powered sunshade for the glass roof to block the sun for kids and, specifically for the EX30, no face-level ventilation for the rear passengers, and the rear seatbelts reel should be in the seat back rather than the C pillar for better packaging when folding down the rear seats.
It’s all about the low MSRP. $35K for an EV is less than the Lexus UX which doesn’t really have more in terms of feature set for its higher price. Clearly considerations had to be made to reduce costs.
Very impressive evolution by Volvo in just a few years. That also goes for Polestar and the Hyundai brand, including KIA and Genesis. These EV companies are on fire imo
Here in Europe (France), we have 220V domestic current, so home charging is even more economical than in the US. We have a pair of 13-year-old diesel SUVs, starting to rack up maintenance costs, so I'm looking around. The EX 30 looks very good. Please do a long-term, so we get endurance information.
I own a 2019 Volvo XC90 and two 2017 Volvo S60s all purchased before COVID. Seriously thinking of buying this to replace one of my S60s as a daily driver.
If they can match this single motor variant to the current model 3 standard range with a larger or equivalent LFP battery, I would greatly appreciate it, I'd rather have 100% usable range and charge cycle longevity over a bump of NCM performance. (I preordered one too, by the way)
I'd love to hear your thoughts about it as a normal tester or, even better, as a long-term tester. My Model 3 was fine for 2+ years but the last few updates seem to have introduced new glitches. I'm seriously thinking about "jumping ship" if that continues. (crosses fingers hoping that Volvo introduces a sedan with similar specs)
Software updates are a two way street. You can get more features more often and accept the possibility of changes you don’t like, or you can have the software “set in stone” for most of the vehicles life. Either can be OK depending on what you’re looking for.
This car really blurs the line between Polestar and Volvo. I thought Polestar was supposed to be the electric/performance Volvo, but this is electric and faster than any Polestar? So is Polestar just more premium? With the Polestar 2 and S60 PHEV being so closely priced, there's just a lot of overlap right now.
Polestar is the sporty brand, not the EV brand. Both Volvo and Polestar are BEV only by 2030 but Polestar is already all BEV now that the Polestar 1 is discontinued. Polestar isn't necessarily more or less premium than Volvo, just sportier. Design wise, they are a little different, but both Scandinavian.
Polestar isn’t resting, there will be significantly faster Polestars soon and Polestar is focusing on track capability, etc while the EX30 is more of a “fast in a straight line” kind of EV
I certainly hope they ironed out performance below 10% when going into limp mode since it is on a new platform. Its reduced performance is downright scary which is why I cancelled my original reservation for tge c40. Also, I doubt that dual motor will do 260 miles on that tiny 64kwh battery. An 800v might have been advantageous for faster charging since the battery is small. My GV60 has about 10more kwh and tops 220 miles on 100%. Then again, I’m not a hypermiler.
Volvo themselves already showed at the most efficient trim it's 26.5kwhs per 100 miles of range in consumption. So in no way is a 64kwh useable pack going to return the 260-275 miles epa Volvo has hinted at and everyone is naively claiming as fact. I'm very curious as a relative has a reservation done the first day on this. What the prices really are once they open U.S. ordering next spring or summer? And what the actual epa comes back as. My bet has been 225miles max for the awd trims and 235ish for rwd er trims. A leaked price sheet also shows 35-55k pricing range for the U.S. with the top awd trims going for 52-55k. Which is of course the trims Volvo brags about and gives everyone to test or review, awd performance pack with the big wheels, glass roof, Sound bar etc. 😏
Cool car and great review, Alex. Unfortunately, the rear legroom (if that matters to you) is abysmal; just 32.3 inches, according to Volvo. The sparkly door panels and dashboard are made of recycled plastic waste from discarded PVC window frames and roller shutters. Odd, but certainly sustainable. Also, the floor mats are made partly from discarded fishing nets.
I made a reservation the day it was shown couple months ago. Not thrilled that the 24 models will come with CCS charging rather than the NACS. An adapter just seems clunky and curious how resale value would be affected.
Europe proved that CCS is superior If it's manage correctly.. But now that the switch is taking place it does not make any sense to buy a CCS EV. CCS owners will be second-class citizens. Much like CHAdeMO EV owners.
Apple proved closed end ecosystem monopolies are better in terms of simplicity and reliability.... I'm willing to bet non-Tesla vehicles using the supercharger network will not have exactly the same experience as a Tesla vehicle.... Tesla's clearly in the driver seat... To be fair and honest about it
Ok. Please explain the mission difference between Volvo and Polestar? I thought Polestar was going to be EV only and Volvo would focus on ICE, hybrids, and PHEVs.
Not the case.. Back in 2021 Volvo said their next gen cars would be BEVs and there would be no PHEV or ICE-based Volvos in the future. Polestar has always been the performance/sporty skunk works of Volvo. Polestar is the sportier brand but Volvos and Polestars are quite similar as Polestar is a company full of ex-Volvo designers and engineers. The only Volvos you'lll find that are PHEVs and hybrids are the current Volvos that will run along with the next-gen Volvos until they are phased out by 2030. All new-gen Volvos will be BEV only.
@@worldtrav72 Polestars have higher cornering limits, stronger braking, firmer suspensions. Straight line performance isn't the main feature. How the cars handle and brake will more define sportiness and the acceleration is a given but not the definer of sporting feel.
Alex, hands down the best presentation of the baby Volvo EX30 aside from the new Volvo CEO’s own presentation👍 where can I buy the little yellow EX30 16:36 to glue it inside my 850 dashboard to keep alive a future ownership of this beauty? 🙂
Would you prefer the cargo volume and shape in this EX30 or in the less tall but longer Polestar 2? Man, now I gotta decide between a new RWD EX30 in 2024 or a used AWD Polestar 2 next month...
Really like the proportions of the EX30. It's a much better looking entry to the sub-subcompact CUV space than the recently introduced Lexus LBX. Just don't like the overly minimalist interior on this one.
I would want to know how much to replace that front fascia. It is gonna look real bad quickly and I doubt PPF will be able to protect it. Dislike the rear wiper assembly that doesn't cover the entire blade. Wonder if the trailing edge of the hood contributes to cavitation effect.
I am not happy Volvo is going fully electric, but what they are putting out is truly amazing. Why would you waste your money on a Tesla model 3 which is nothing more than the Toyota Corolla of EV.
I like that rear end look quite a bit more than the traditional look of the rest of Volvo’s lineup. It loses that weird excessively tall brake light look that the others all have. Still this is just too small for me and not enough range. I really like the design of this inside and out though.
Must say one of the better looking EVs seen so far, exept for the tablet "attachment" up front! Why dont they integrate the display into the dash? Kia and Hyundai does a much better job on this.
Thanks for showing that the cargo cover can be stowed in the underfloor space in the back. Is the vehicle available for public viewing in NYC or only for press?
I’m hoping that it will show up at Electrify Expo on Long Island in mid August. I asked Volvo and they will not have an answer until after the first of the month
All 2024s will work with NACS with the included Volvo adapter so it depends on which adapter you want. If you get the 2025 calendar year version (2026 MY) then you’ll need a CCS to NACS adapter and a J1772 to NACS adapter. Honestly adapters are just a way of life. Public L2 charging is by and large J1772 and by location there are more CCS stations (small numbers of plugs) than Tesla Supercharger stations. NACS will be the preferred road trip plug, but in-city L2 or low speed DC charging is more likely to be CCS for a while.
adapters are fine for car reviewers..... but the average person wants the simplicity of a gas fill up.... the OEMs are going to be screwed during the transition.... since a substantial number of buyers will either hold off or buy a Tesla instead
First Volvo in years I'm interested in. Interior design patterns don't work for me, but I'm sure they have an option that doesn't look so cheap. Hope they add a version with a bigger trunk or wagon version.
Great overview! I'm deeply disappointed by the lack of a proper driver's instrument cluster and heavy reliance on the touchscreen over dedicated switches for routine functions. I guess that's how Volvo is keeping the price low.
Volvo should definitely make these in the U.S. like the 90. I feel like most Americans like to have tax incentives if they get a new EV nowadays. And most of those Americans don’t want to have to lease a vehicle in order to get those benefits.

It's basically the Tesla look but without the BS air vents, and actually looks good.
@@smtry6541 Definitely correct on all counts there. I'd suspect the bean counters had a bit of hand in that one. Cheaper to not have knobs.
There's an aftermarket for add-on Tesla driver instrument panels. I'm guessing the same thing will happen for the EX30?
Same. They included one in the EX90 why not put it on EX30 aswell. Atleast give it as an addon you can buy.
I would totally recommend getting this, at least as a long term tester. This vehicle can't get here soon enough!
I have a preORDER too, high performance of course!
Very comprehensive review. Much more thorough than other EX30 reviews offered on this channel. Thank you
Wow, GM should try making something like this. They could call it the Jolt or the Colt or something.
They could name it after Mary Barra: the Dolt.
Just bring back the Bolt with Ultium.
They could build it at the Mexico plant and call it the Barrio.
I have a Rivian with a glass roof. I had it tinted with a high quality ceramic film and its' fantastic! No issues whatsoever.
Yes, I too have the C40 and even with an extra layer of ceramic tint, the glass itself gets hot heating up the interior
There are so many luxury EVs on the market now. But just give me a cheap, economy EV I can drive to work everyday and I'll be happy.
Chevy Bolt?
Not having shorter range LFP battery in USA may be a dealbreaker for me. I don’t need the extra range I’d rather use money to upgrade to a higher spec.
@@CrazyWeeMonkey The Bolt is not a bad choice but it changes slowly and is only available in 2wd
That one knob to control all seat movements is a cost-cutting move I’ve haven’t seen before.
Really nice release from Volvo! I love the interior design choices and all of the small functional items that get overlooked like the stowable cargo cover.
it’s a Geely
Same stowage in XC40 Twin ... mine stays stowed as otherwise I band my forehead on it reaching in
I preordered the day it opened! I hope the alloy wheel that were in the Volvo launch video will be available
The wheel on the launch video is just for the launch, don't think it will be available
Great choice to get an EX30. Given the glut of TVs on the market now, Volvo realizes that the days of overinflated EV prices are over, and this is the player they bring to the new game.
The flakey trim looks like the epoxy floor in my garage. Lol
Yeah, these renewable materials are just another word for cheap materials.
Renewables seem cheap, if you're neanderthal.
But the trim covered in polka dots did look like crap.
Seeing this makes me wish I owned a home and had a charger. Quite the looker and all the space I'd ever need.
Ugh. No shade on the moon roof? Deal breaker for me unless there is a solid roof option.
Yes, the glass roof is optional
It’s well tinted. I have the same in my c40 and the sun never bothers me.
@@diverseeko Could be but my VW Golf also has a heavily tinted moon roof and if the sun is overhead I get enough glare in my eye that I keep the shade extended at all times.
@@JYD_esign Hope so and not part of a package that has stuff I want. I have a deposit in on one of these vehicles.
You didn’t mention the dash mounted speaker bar. This eliminates door speakers and their associated cost and complexity. Same with the console mounted window switches. The doors now only have handles and windows, this saves on costs of copper and manufacturing. One reason they can hit the 35K cost. And still look good!
Southerners like me do not appreciate the giant glass roof with no sun shade. We're going to BAKE. Glass roof needs to be an option.
It’s optional.
I predict Geely will beone of the top 10 car companies in the future, even in NA. A great design.
Pre ordered mine! Super excited. Moss yellow with mist!
I, too, did a reservation for one. Never would have expected a Volvo to fall in my price range. I was holding out to see what the released Equinox EV was going to bring, or I was going to grab a hybrid. Not now!
Hey Volvo, build a freakin EX60 already.
They probably want to see how well the EX90 sells first.
@@JulezWinnfield well that's the high end, the sweet spot has always been the X3, Q5, Model Y sized vehicle... this is why the Model Y is such a hit.
@@kevinn1158 Tesla released the X before the Y though
@@Carfan678 Agreed, but that did nothing for Tesla's sales. In a way, Tesla could afford to go for halo car given where the BEV market was when the X came out. Volvo coming out with the EX90 and the EX30 makes it look like they are protecting/prioritizing their ICE product sale. Meaning they want to avoid cutting into their XC60 sales as long as possible.
@@kevinn1158 the EX90 was announced 8 months ago not 8 Years ago what do you expect for manufactures to announce all their new models in a month or something. Bummed there's no rear HVAC.
Super annoying trend for smaller cars
A HUD would be nice but there are aftermarket instrument clusters for Teslas and I'm guessing the EX30 will have them available at some point
At $35,000 it's a no brainer. A Tesla 3 is $40,000 plus $7500 tax credit - no question, Model 3
Nice video ! How is the leg space for the rear passengers compared to the XC 40 ?
Perfect for us urban dwellers. I hope the dealers keep the price down.
Very impressive evolution by Volvo in just a few years.
That also goes for Polestar and the Hyundai brand, including KIA and Genesis. These EV companies are on fire imo
Volvo & Polestar = Geely
Does it have a heat pump or resistive heating ?
Curious how it compares to The small Mazdas. The CX 3 CX 30 CX5 & CX50
You have to get wool to get the yellow?
Here in Europe (France), we have 220V domestic current, so home charging is even more economical than in the US. We have a pair of 13-year-old diesel SUVs, starting to rack up maintenance costs, so I'm looking around. The EX 30 looks very good. Please do a long-term, so we get endurance information.
Most charging at home in the US is done at 240V so there’s no efficiency difference in the charging.
Europhile misinformation about the US is amusing.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide What I meant was that 220 is the usual home current, rather than the 110 in the States. No installation required.
Eventually I'd like to see a comparison of the EX30 and the ID4. The EX30 looks a bit more refined but from the walk around here feels smaller.
I own a 2019 Volvo XC90 and two 2017 Volvo S60s all purchased before COVID. Seriously thinking of buying this to replace one of my S60s as a daily driver.
No instrument cluster is a bit of a deal breaker.
How come no one complains about this in Teslas? I think people get used to it but then again, I never owned a Tesla.
@@jerbsherb4391 oh people definitely complain about it on Teslas
100% agreed. Rented a model 3 and it was horrible not having driver instrument display. Major deal breaker.
and there are aftermarket add-on instrument clusters for Teslas.... Which I'm hopefully guessing will happen eventually for the EX30?
Heat pump? Vehicle to load?
If they can match this single motor variant to the current model 3 standard range with a larger or equivalent LFP battery, I would greatly appreciate it, I'd rather have 100% usable range and charge cycle longevity over a bump of NCM performance. (I preordered one too, by the way)
So, next year the lease rebates will be at the point of sale even without dealer rebates?
Nice review, but was the color really desaturated for this video? What was described as robin's egg blue and sage green just showed up as off-white.
They have Polestar
@@markmd9 Aye, but the Polestar 2 starts at $50k and the Polestar 3 starts at $84k - not exactly comparable. 😛
To be fair the only reason I care about the plug type is the reliability of the network. Teslas network is far more reliable than Electrify America
The world is changing fast.
Polecat is $$$
Not the case..
EVs are performance, almost by default. The lines will get blurred…
@@worldtrav72 Polestars have higher cornering limits, stronger braking, firmer suspensions. Straight line performance isn't the main feature. How the cars handle and brake will more define sportiness and the acceleration is a given but not the definer of sporting feel.
Heat pump?
Yes, but no HUD...!.
Alex, hands down the best presentation of the baby Volvo EX30 aside from the new Volvo CEO’s own presentation👍 where can I buy the little yellow EX30 16:36 to glue it inside my 850 dashboard to keep alive a future ownership of this beauty? 🙂
volve needs to work on that interior. the interior trim looks like the inside of a college football stadium bathroom
Some see things as they are and ask, ""Why?" have fun with that....
I dream things that never were and ask, ""Why not?""
That dash shelf is weird, but I like the rest.
This is the new Volvo rear look. It was first seen on the EX90.
My lease for my VW ID-4 ends in December, I think I know what I'm getting next 👀
Must say one of the better looking EVs seen so far, exept for the tablet "attachment" up front! Why dont they integrate the display into the dash? Kia and Hyundai does a much better job on this.
An electrified C30. I dig it.
Thanks for showing that the cargo cover can be stowed in the underfloor space in the back. Is the vehicle available for public viewing in NYC or only for press?
I don’t know if it is available to the public but you should be able to see it at the NY Auto Show
I’m hoping that it will show up at Electrify Expo on Long Island in mid August. I asked Volvo and they will not have an answer until after the first of the month
6:11 exactly the confirmation i needed. canceled deposit as i do not want first batch without nacs. we live in a charging wasteland. 2025 it is!

@@markmd9 Yeah, I find the XC40 ugly and the Polestars are all way overpriced.

Yes get it! I've also preordered one in New Zealand and it is due around Christmas 2023 or early new year.
This is an awkward phase to decide whether to buy an EV or a traditional gasoline car
Maybe it was but not now. Teslas are getting the $7500 again, and that’s after selling below msrp. This Volvo looks sharp even without a federal credit.
If you have not driven and EV before you need to. It will make a believer of you.
I must say this is a very compelling EV, it might be what I replace me current 2017 Bolt with
Does it have CarPlay?
It does!
@@AAutoBuyersGuide That's great to know - the lack of it would have been a deal-killer. Thanks!
Well, I was considering the EX 30, until this review. I have a vision impairment on the right. Not having an instrument cluster facing forward is a deal breaker for me. Unless I could get an aftermarket cluster like they make for Tesla. Then I'm good
Like it, great pricing !
There's no "N" neutral on the gear selector.
It's in the middle
SIze-wize, I wonder if this competes with the Chevy Bolt or Bolt EUV. That is a fine form factor and size, BTW.
It’s not far off in size, but as far as competition, Chevy and Volvo don’t seem much cross shop.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Maybe not, but electric cars are a new world. I went from Honda/Subaru to a Tesla and a Bolt. I think the Bolt is an excellent experience *except* for the 'fast' chagring. Many cars in its category seems to have extremely limited dc fast charging, but this one seems to have competent charging, and possibly a much better software experience than Chevy and Hyundai can offer (and the VW ID3 in no US markets).
the production of the Bolt is ending, so it's a pointless comparison
@@nc3826Considering there are a lot of Bolts out there, for comparison's sake it is handy. But I just got an email from Chevy formally announcing that they would be continuing the Bolt, but as to when the next year model is coming out they didn't say.
@@martalli so GM going to continue to produce it but there's going to be delay in the next year's production? Which would completely contradicts all the current information about it... Sorry but I'm skeptical
Will they let you drive it soon?
Nice to see the unique interior design, but I feel they missed an opportunity a bit to do smt nice with the console/display. Instead of the ‘iPad in the middle’, they could have made smt nice that extends to the driver side as well for basics such as speed.
Also curious to see the interior in person - whether or not the stylish feels luxury or a bit too ‘plastic’
I don't know if it's the camera perspective, but when you stand next to it, the EX30 seems small.
Regardless, it's a nice car and a great value if you get the $7500 lease credit. Looking forward to test driving one.
Don't think you do on this one.
@@ktpinnacle Why not? I figured the lease credit was pretty much applicable to any EV.
@@michaels3689 True. There is a loophole for leases.
35k? i believe it when I see it. What no dealer markups?
Volvo hasn’t had the same issue with dealer markups as some, but we will see of course
@@AAutoBuyersGuide i hope not. If that is true, I will strongly consider one. I rather buy a car from a car manufacturer, rather than a tech company pretending they're a car manufacturer.
I like the symmetry of the interior.
The Volvo EX30 is so close to being on my "purchase list", but it doesn't have a driver instrument cluster in front of the driver.
I learned how to drive in a Toyota Echo, and other than it was really slow (I couldn't hit 60mph driving it on the freeway and that made me nervous because drivers would zoom by me) I didn't like how I had to turn my head to view my speed.
In the end what did you buy?
