As someone who was just getting tired of reading the lore cause they all end in the same way with nonstop bloodshed it's nice to see a perspective like this. I like it when people are nice to each other sometimes
You have this scene and then the one where mortarions legions attack and the ultramarines captain says "I'll handle it" and executes the civilians lol. The scene was very similar to this one. I think it was about a spec ops marine squad that was tasked with finding mortarions bell when they come across a group of civilians and decide to execute them so they can't accidentally tell they are there. It implies that the ultramarine executed a child there as well.

Pedro Kantor is by far one of my favorite marines. More sympathy then salamanders, and just a hell of a story to rise from the ashes to bring his chapter from the brink of extinction with only 70 marines left. The crimson fists has always been one of my favorites
For the civilians that they saved and more added to their safe zones by Chads like Pedro here.. a salamander is born to be a true human being of hope and kindness but sadly not all salamanders can go everywhere, but a day shines brighter when a Salamander helps a Brother carry a family into safety. This one salamander who build the swing to see a Crimson Fist walk in to gently set the family down so they can walk and rest is a day where the salamander is reminded all of them are Human.
Warhammer 40k always having grimdark moment made it look normal. But, when something like kindness is introduced, it made the the setting at least a little bit wholesome.
True strength and masculinity is protecting the weak when they are defenseless, shielding them from the bulwark of the darkness. I know you men feel a stirring in your soul when reading these words ,stand tall and proud ,and may the darkness be kept at bay by your mighty deeds of Love. ❤️
All Sons of the Praetorian know that their charge is to safeguard the Imperium. The people are part of that Imperium, and must be protected as well. Without them, it falls.
Even against all odds. Against all the vile evil seen and done by both sides of a conflict. There is good. There is kindness. There is a tender side. Good job chapter master. I needed some kind of wholesome moment after the week I just experienced 😢
Kindness is not unique to the Salamanders. The Lamentors, of Blood Angel stock, are also that way... though they are literally cursed with bad luck and can never catch a break. That said, Kantor here is a Chad, as they say. Far too many would applaud the use of the Emperor's Mercy while proclaiming Kantor "a hard man making the hard decisions." But they miss the point of it. Mercy killing the civilians would have been the *easy* way out. The harder challenge was overcoming the difficulties of the trek with those civilians slowing them down. Kantor took the harder path, and in so doing, preserved his humanity and his honor. Though he had the social graces if a drunken walrus, I think Dorn would be proud.
See, ironically, its things like this that make it grimdark. Compassion is possible, but it might not always work out. When it does, it only emphasizes the times when it doesn’t.
Not really. Most if not all loyalist chapters wouldn't kill civilians and would do similar things unless there is ABSOLUTELY no other choice. Space Marines may look Heartless but most of them aren't...it's just that there's few of them and they're only sent to the most brutal battlefields in the universe. So they're rarely put into situations where other options are available... No, the real dangerous and hearless ones are the inquisitors/the heclesiarchy in feneral. Grimdark isn't about the hopelessness or gratuitous nihilism. It's about the rage against the dying light, the acts of heroism that drive back the darkness, the small kindnesses that shine ever brighter the darker it becomes.
Pedro Kantor just being a beacon of hooe for humanity. Meanwhile Rynn's Might being just an absolute murder machine, blaring hymns from its speakers and slaughtering orks.
I’m screaming, we need more stories like this from 40k. I know it’s supposed to be grim dark and incredibly brutal but like… this is what the Emperor would’ve wanted
Leave an innocent behind? Never gonna happen. That's not what we do. A soldier does not fight because he hates what is in front of him, but strives to protect that which is behind him.
I always love hearing about this story. Never been a fan of space marines, doubly so for most things imperial fists. But the Crimson Fists are the exceptions, and mostly because of Pedro Kantor. This part of the book (Rynn's World, for those who are interested) even notes how such an act is highly unusual for space marines. But Kantor does it anyway, because at his core, he cares. And thus setting an example for the rest of his chapter. He truly carries the legacy of Alexis Pollux. There's a reason 90% of the Crimson Fist art is them fighting last stands against all odds. Also, Cortez has the funniest line ever spoken by a space marine in that book. XD
There was a bit in the alpharius novel where he had to reveal himself to a woman and her child as the primarch of a chapter no one ever heard of, and USUALLY the protocol is to leave no evidence so we all assume that he just kills them and moves onto the next scene. It’s so heart warming when that same woman and child reappear serving onboard alpharius’ ship and helps him escape
Honestly, the children keeping up with a space marine in power armor march is a trial in itself. Their casual stride would be insane for a normal human to keep up with over a distance. If only they could be put through the real trials.
Why I’m a Crimson Fist. I love that it’s not an easy decision for Pedro. He knows that if the Fists get caught in the open by the orcs they’ll be wiped out and the hope of ever restoring the chapter along with them. He knows that this woman and her children are insignificant in the larger scheme of things. He knows that, tactically, he should leave them or grant them The Emperor’s mercy. But his humanity will not let him and, for that, I love him.
