When standing alone "day" is pronounced /deɪ/, but /-dɪ/ in the second element of compound words such as Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, yesterday because all those -day's are unstressed. In the word "today", however, "-day" is always pronounced /deɪ/ because it is stressed.
