    I originally thought your spar cap was going to be flat on top of the spar - exactly like an I-beam - so was mildly surprised to see it oriented vertically.
    Upon seeing the slots in the ribs I see the elegance in your method - you get continuous spar-surface at the top and bottom edges, where the stresses are highest.
    Neat engineering

      Cheers! You're the first to notice and write a comment about this design choice. Since my final design does not include traditional mounting rods, the loads need to be carried fully by the spars alone into the wingbox, so I did not want to compromise them.

    This is an excellent series! Just a note and a minor correction: Whenever you create a component and then later move components into that, it becomes an Assembly, e.g. your "wing (starboard)" is an Assembly (note the change in its icon), not a component.

    • @RCCAD2VR
      @RCCAD2VR  3 года назад +1

      Hey there B - Thanks for the comment, glad you're liking the series. This is a naming philosophy topic that I think there has been some debate around. I did some digging and in the Fusion360 documentation, these are called Sub-Components. The document as a whole can be considered an assembly and all of the components within it are sub-components. It's a paradigm shift from traditional CAD software where every part is it's own file then assembled in separate CAD document as an assembly. The multi-block icon from everything I have checked is consistently referred to as a Sub-Component. Maybe AutoDesk could provide some extra clarification around this.

      You are not missing anything. It is a tutorial that I still need to produce. Fusion360 recently made some changes to the features available in the creators/hobby (Free) version that made the process of getting the designs out a little more challenging. I've been testing out various methods to make this as straight forward for those who are not paying for F360. So far it's all been very cumbersome, but doable. As soon as I nail down a solid method that's easy to follow I will be recording it and putting it out for everyone. Shouldn't be too much longer.

    Your spar cap is actually a spar doubler NOT a cap. The spar Cap goes on top of the spar with the spar as a sandwich filler below it usually with a bottom cap also! So that the two caps and the spar make a sandwich that looks like an I beam. That way it actually carries even more of the torsion load of the wing.

    Hey Terrance Fusion 360 unfortunately is no longer going to be a free hobbyist service as of October 1st. Very disappointed as I was following your vids and other tutorials to begin to learn fusion and wham it's going to cost and not affordable enough to just have to use on occasion. So looks like Freecad is the next best service to use so going to download that today and try and learn it rather than Fusion 360. It's a real shame and will affect you. So as others are saying you should export all your drawings asap in whatever format like dxf or dwg as all of that will be disabled on October 1st! Unless you pay for the service. So do it while you can and then check out Freecad as that's where most guys are switching to. Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming.

Later in this series we will be making use of DFXs which are not going away, they will still be supported after October 1st.
      Quote from Auto Desk:
      - DXF: You will still be able to right click on a sketch in the browser and select Save As DXF.
      - Manufacture: 2, 2.5 and 3 axis milling will still be available in the new Personal Use offering.
      At this point I don't see any reason to jump ship unless there's a feature you needed that is no longer going to be supported. If you run into any issues, please let me know so that I can look into them and address them on the channel.

      @@RCCAD2VR Indeed, I had a read of the forum and there's quite a few twitchy reactions there. From what I can tell it will still be a perfectly valid tool for hobbyists and they've gone to quite a bit of effort to try and come up with something that will nerf exploiting companies while allowing the rest of us to continue with Fusion as a hobby. There are some impacts though, no plugins means we loose access to stuff like cog creation tools that I bet a lot of people use and the lack of STEP export does feel like an unnecessary kick in the teeth against open sourcing designs in a "non-pants" form. Certainly worth exporting anything you have already done in STEP while you still can. Down the line... I guess we'll all be sneakernet'ing our Fusion format designs round to our nearest friend with a better licence if we ever want to export them. I know I will at least.

      @RCCAD2VR  3 года назад +2

      Hi Carter - I am not 100% sure as to what you're asking but will try my best to answer what I think you are asking. The wing skin is a surface body, without it being a surface body, you will not be able to do a patch at the wing root. If your skin is a T-Spline (Purple Icon and edited using tools in the Form Tab) you will need to convert it from T-Spline to BRep. Since it's not closed it will not create a solid body, instead it will create a surface body. From there you'll be able to patch the wing root.

    Hi Terrance, great videos and insights. How did you allow for the thickness of the wing skin in creating your rib and spar templates? I have missed that part of the tutorial? I am redrawing a paper plan in Fusion based on folloeing your methods.

    • @RCCAD2VR
      @RCCAD2VR  3 года назад

      Hey there Jason. This is not something I covered in the the video, so you have not missed anything.
      There are two options for this, both of which using the thicken tool. You can either thicken outward which is easier, or you can thicken inward which will require using the cut tool to remove the interfering ribs. The challenge with that method, if done after extruding the ribs, will be that the body faces will have different shapes. This will create extra work down the road if you plan on prepping for CNC, Paper Printing, or laser cutting. I would recommend thickening outward, which is how I did it. Hope that helps! Happy New Year!

    • @Manufacturship
      @Manufacturship 3 года назад +1

      @@RCCAD2VR Thanks Terrance. I had not thought to thicken outwards, yes it would be easier as offsetting inwards creates problems with easily creating the cutting tool profile. I am certainly drawing this for CNC cutting of the parts so I am looking forward to the rest of the design.

    wing lightening ... HOW can you be certain that WHERE you place your holes is correct without a stress and load analysis available in fusion 360 ... because the stress on the wing and ribs will determine WHERE you MUST have stuff and where you dont need stuff ...
    .
    I have not seen a single person take this very MANDATORY thing into consideration at this time when it is really VERY critical ... it is the difference between wings breaking off or folding up under loads and actually working as wings ...
    .
    even an RC plane needs this checked ... who knows you might even be able to get away with less ribs and a lighter plane if it is done at this point

      Hey there. Without access to a propulsion system, you'll need to stick with gliders. If you have access to depron or thin sheets of foam, you can make your own airplanes without any machines. Just a hit wire cutter, scissors, glue, and tape. If you want controlled flight, you'll need a radio, receiver, and servo. They can be inexpensive relatively speaking. but not knowing what your financial capacity is, it's hard to make recommendations. When resources are scarce and hard to come by, you'll need to think creatively and use what's around you.

    If I need reattachable wings on the airplane that can be replaced with another set of wings; does using this mounting technique work? Or does that mounting rod cause problems with trying to unattach the wing.

    • @RCCAD2VR
      @RCCAD2VR  Год назад

      You will just need to make sure that however you decide to mount the wings, the second set of wings need to have the mounts positioned in the exact same location otherwise you will run into problems. Also you will want to design the fuselage surface to be able to accommodate different wings to avoid strange gaps when the wings are attached.

Please be patient though, I'm in the middle of building and shooting my next build video, so may be a little slow to respond. We'll get this figured out for you.

    how were you able to select the wing and create the patch because i am not able to do it. and also is there anything i have missed in the tutorial because the texture or the physical view of the wing looks as one piece and smooth surface. mine looks like the one we did in the 2nd episode. how did you do it?

      Hey there -- Not sure how to answer your questions without seeing what you are doing. Not being able to patch can happen for several reason, from not having the correct selection priority set, to a spline or shape not being closed correctly.

      @@RCCAD2VR i actually read your other comments and was able to convert the t spline to a b-rep bodyand then everything was all good.

    Sorry Terrence, but near the minute 26.30 you have 3 differents "Wing Skin".. One created in form, but the other two? I tell you because i can't close the wing with the command in "surface mode". Can you help me?

    • @RCCAD2VR
      @RCCAD2VR  3 года назад +1

      Hey there Stefano - Sorry to hear you are having a little difficulty with getting through this part of the tutorial. This skins are all the same for the most part. The form (Purple Icon) was converted into a surface (Orange Icon). The reason there are two is because the original loft was done in two parts. If you are unable to patch the root, that means your wing skin surface isn't closed. This is most likely happening at the trailing edge. Zoom in to that area and you will most likely see it has a gap between the top and bottom portions of the skin.
      This will be something you will need to fix in the sketch and then re-do the wing skin lofts. The alternative, and less precise method would be to close the root airfoil sketch and then patch it from the sketch, instead of the form. I hope that helps.

      @@RCCAD2VR don't worry! I maked another work. I used "loft" not in form, but in "surface mode". Now the wing is close!

      Hi George, for this series everything is being done in direct modeling mode. Parametric modeling is fantastic but complicates things when you're learning and constantly making changes, mistakes, deletes, do overs, and adjustments. The timeline can get pretty messed up when references get removed and fixing it is a pain and hard to explain. So for now, I'm keeping it to just plain ol free modeling. Thanks for asking! I'll get into parametric modeling in a future episode for sure.

      RC CAD-2-VR fantastic I was just wondering. Your doing a fantastic job. And got me motivated to design in fusion. Use auto cad for work so it was a big change. And your right it was very confusing for me in beginning and still is. Don’t love evryth8ng about fusion but I almost have a designed airframe. Thanks for everything.
