I never understood the point of buying stuff like this in hopes of finding value. 9 times out of 10 you're losing money. Am I wrong?

You're wrong.. lol.. and right at same time. You would want to buy 1st chapter boxes for value, because they have tons of good value cards. A lot more then set 2 and 3. I opened 7 boxes and gained a lot of money, because I hit a lot of good cards. So just all depends if you're smart about which set you're investing into if going for possible value gains. Also new set 4 coming looks like it will have a lot of good value cards.

Gamblers still gamble because sometimes they win. Most of the time the house wins though. If you've studied addiction, it's the habit that is addictive. Opening the pack is where the dopamine hits. Like pulling the arm of the slot machine. Sure gambling can be automated, but it won't be as addictive. Have to build that habit. That ritual. That "last pack magic".

@@PeteCorp So far I have spent probably close to $3,000 on Lorcana but I am up over $2,000 in profit. So I can't really complain at all, and that's without me grading all of my 14 enchanteds, which would improve the profit by a lot more. So I can say I have easily doubled my money or more for sure. So I cant complain at all.

Also just to add Lorcana probably has the best odds of good return rate out of packs I would say... and Disney is new and at the same time a Company that has been around forever. So this is my go to TCG now.
