There is no such thing as the most important soul artist since whatever…, Meshell has without a doubt a major influence on the scene and she is simply fantastic but music isn’t a competition, what about D’Angelo for example? At the end it’s just all about our personal taste
Smoking! After seeing MeShell 4/6/24 for the first time live. This was just what I needed. That same energy! Can't wait until the new release in August! ☀🔥
Got the fortunate pleasure of seeing Ms. Ndegeocello in the early days (my early days) when I was given an assignment by Warner Bros to photograph her at the debut performances at ACME down on 3rd street. She is mesmerizing in concert and personably. I almost got a chance to be in her MV 'Let Me Run My Fingers Through Your Dreadlocks' when I was sent for the go-see but my 6 year old locks weren't quite the length they were looking for at that time. LoL In the past couple decades I've watch her music transform into some engulfing styles. I see she's got gigs lined up for 2021.Looking fwd to that and to getting the hell outta this year as well !
Meshell Ndegeocello is FUNKEEE!!!! I just wish MORE people including the music industry would recognize & acknowledge her talents so much more than they have been!
I remember watching this when it first aired on PBS. I was blown away. The musicianship and songwriting is beyond belief. God Shiva is just phenomenal.
If you are the One who's gonna be the first One to Thumbs Down this then just keep moving on. We who are in a Thumbs Up vibe here and most likely won't be influenced.
I saw this when it first came out and at the time I put it on VHS but I lost track of where I put the tape. What a trip .. tape. No such thing nowadays unless we talk about adhesive. Thanks for posting. The audio & video from the source should be remastered. The whole band was killing .. Meshell is a musical genius.
Can remember seeing Freddy back in the day at Twin’s Lounge in DC when they were uptown… seeing him at open jams and other gigs, tearing up some keyboards. He was a monster back then in the day and still is….
- David Dyson simply putting on a bass clinic on Ecclesiastes here. Dammit! Tone, soul, feeling. Talk about the core of a rhythm section. Me'Shell put together one of the best bands back in the 90's, hands down. FGP on keys and Allen Cato on guitar. I just cant get enough of what they did back then. Saw em live in Seattle in '99 and will never forget it.
Meshell created the grooves that neosoul artists use today! I am happy to say that I have held her as my number 1 since Plantation Lullabies was released in Canada in late 93!
Awesome, just finding out about the Artist tonight while watching another video highlighting the 10 best female bass players. She's one of the best bass players male or female hands down and multi talented musically all around.
Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been looking for this for years. Couldn’t find it anywhere. Saw it when it originally was aired on television and prompted me to get the first David Dyson album. I already had Ndegeocello’s. ✌🏿
That hands down has to be one of the top 10 funkiest and hardest grooving performances on RUclips. I’ve watched this performance repeatedly for over 10 years and it continues to blow me away every time……..every time. That’s was one incredible lineup of musicians, jeez.
Thank you for posting this❤. Over the years, I’ve tried to explain to people how incredible this show was, and the number of phenomenal artists that appeared on it.
I loved this version of her band. I discovered her by accident when I was playing on the HORDE tour and they came on afterward. So good. I had already seen Gene Lake with Steve Coleman so it was such a treat to see him with this band (and his father, Oliver, is a huge influence on my music).
Walked in the house of blues NOLA late 90's I believe it was never having heard of her. Been a fan ever since. Try and promote her music any chance I get.
I've been listening to the Cookie mixtape a lot recently, 18 years on and the messages are still painful and sadly still an issue... Always loved her artistry, delivering the painful truths with her unique soulful and tender ferocity...
legendary. no other artist like her and she paved the way in the 90s for composing song writing-soul fusion- spoken word in music…….a descendant from nina simone
The most important soul artist since the 90s.
100% saw her live in Munich 97’. Incredible performance!
I concur!
100%

Hadn’t seen this. Not just a great bass player, but a great artist. Killer performance by the whole band.

David Dyson - great guy as well as funky bass!!
David dyson.. what a beast
That BASS PLAYER THOUGH. GOOD GOD.
That’s David Dyson on the bass. DC Bass Legend!
I had the profound experience of catching Meshell in 1996 @ Bimbo's 365, SF, CA. I will die being a die-hard fan. Soundtrack of my LIFE 🙏.

The stankface i got during Dysons grooves and Federico’s solo and progressions is mindblowing!
Can remember seeing Freddy back in the day at Twin’s Lounge in DC when they were uptown… seeing him at open jams and other gigs, tearing up some keyboards. He was a monster back then in the day and still is….
i had been on two of her concerts in Berlin back then - pure dope. she even came after the shows to chat with her fans - a very kind soul

Damn. I just found her tonight. Just turned 22
I'm a 1998 baby and awwww her music is good!
Different than other singers, I like her!
me too! 1998 young bassist, listening to this piece of art!
I was today years old when discovering this brilliance.........25 years
Meshell created the grooves that neosoul artists use today!
I am happy to say that I have held her as my number 1 since Plantation Lullabies was released in Canada in late 93!
As usual ......she nails it.

Classic Meshell performance with her legendary, stellar band! Pure fiyah!
She’s just brilliant.

Yes She Was… One Of The Most Influential… Very Special Artist🖤🖤🖤
The bassline for "Step into the Projects" was modified to a slapped version of the bassline from Wayne Shorter's "Footprints"
we are so lucky to have this material !!! thank you meshell and the other cats !!
Love this music and MeShell's vibrations
I discovered Meshell's first album in 1994 and the second in 1998/99. It's incredible what emotion her music brings and the groove they give off.
Her older Neo soul funk music is classic stuff. I usually listen to one of more of her jams a week.
Now, that is a sweet collection of badassery! Fantastic!
I would love to see her in concert I adore her music and watching her play bass. She is like female version of Raphael Saadiq.
Kind words but he is the male version of her. 😊
@@wmranson9311 I was gonna say this lol

What a great format and setting for her being an excellent musician, composer and an inspiring human being! Thanks for sharing.

And she is os articulate.

Liliquoi Moon is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Am moving....
What is The Name of this bassplayer? He play amazing!
Davis Dyson
I want to learn she bad wow .
My Bass SHEro.
right around 14:00 minutes she starts talking and the rhythm of her speech is like separate solo over the key solo. Is it just me?
Dommage qu'elle n'ait jamais joué avec Miles Davis... mon rêve de les entendre ensembles.
She was mentored by Marcus Miller who was Miles' band leader in the 80s... So one degree of separation
That would have been kold!!
Awesome tone.
Missing one element….Wah Wah Watson! RIP unc!!!
Got that right...
@@Guitfiddlejase Yeap!! He was my uncle!! RIP!!!
