I think it depends on where you live with the “Hello” and “Good Morning” when you walk in a room. I live in Texas and we are a very friendly state

Yes, that is true. If we did ever move to the US, we would probably look for a friendly state to live in ☺️

I agree, I feel like in Southern States people are a lot more personable than northern states. I also was thinking the culture of DR is more country living.

Good stuff! I’m visiting Santo Domingo in June. I’m excited and want to know things like this before I go.
Yeah we Americans are rude. Especially in the northern states. Down south people are a lot more friendly 😂

Canadians face similar cultural differences, having spent a lot of time in SPM the last 4 years, “Dominican time” is the number one difference for me. Even with plans, Dominicans are always late by hours and keep people waiting. Canadians tend to be early or at least on time. The sharing of food can be shocking too, in the sense that I’ve experienced people walking in and going directly into our fridge as if it was there house and helping themselves to any food in the fridge. Then there’s family that comes over and takes over my kitchen to cook what I had planned or something else rather that let the host do their thing. Often very frustrating and can appear disrespectful but it’s not intended to be for most, especially on the cooking aspect. I often need to place boundaries and plan accordingly otherwise very frustrating since that would not happen here. Helping for sure, taking over never.

Oh I love that they greet people there everywhere, it’s very refreshing! Canadians are often friendly too but not to the extent that happen there.

Yes Dominican time is real! And no, it definitely isn't meant to be disrespectful and most people probably aren't even aware of the fact that it would come across that way to people who aren't from the DR.

What about the treatment of the Haitians? Is that obvious?

I hear about the deportation of Haitians in other parts of the country from time to time. However, in San Pedro de Macoris I personally don't notice Haitians being treated differently so it isn't obvious to me. That doesn't mean they aren't though.
