      FYI the + on the e-mail address is a bad idea. Fastmail and a few others offer this, but Apple makes it easy to hide your e-mail address. Another idea you mentioned in the last video of manually removing your info from data brokers is great, or a paid service like DeleteMe/Incogni is good. I haven't tried those services but it's worth checking out.

      Of course if it's your Apple ID that won't work.

      The rate limit should be on Apple's server, not on the device. Beside the Captcha, there should be say a 6-12 hour timeout before another reset can be sent per account. imo

  • @InimitaPaul

    This is great advice and easy to follow for me but not so easy for my elderly mother who just about knows iOS basics. Just trying to explain this to her caused her severe anxiety and now she’s worried about touching her phone when any notification arrives and is reluctant to answer any phone call.
    Apple needs to fix this yesterday! It may happen to every company out there but how that company responds to the issue is what matters and I am not impressed so far.

    • @jameskeener7251
      @jameskeener7251 2 месяца назад +1

      I'm 80 and I'm not your mother, but I have a similar response. I bought my first Mac in 1984 (loved the halftime ad) and knew everything about a Mac for about a month. And then . . .
      When I learn of something like this, I just bunker down. What *very* specific advice would you give your mother?

    • @InimitaPaul
      @InimitaPaul 2 месяца назад

      @@jameskeener7251 I showed her the message that pops up and she didn’t think she’d be able to differentiate between it and a standard system pop up so I said to just click NO on everything for the time being and if something pops up more than once to put the phone down and call me on the landline. I also told her to only answer calls from family and friends whose names and pictures appear on the screen when it rings. Luckily I take care of all her bills and anything financial so any call like that will come through me but she has a lot of financial stuff (bank account, savings, pensions etc) on her phone that she likes to keep an eye on and won’t delete the apps so it’s worrying. She wants to keep some control over things in her life and so would I tbh so I don’t want to take that away from her.
      It’s worrying, over the last decade or so I’ve had to sign her up for certain things, all official but immediately after having signed up she’d get spam emails and texts so those companies are either selling her details or they’re being stolen. It happens so quickly after signing up I think they’re selling them but her email and phone number are out there, as are all of ours.
      It’s a numbers game, the odds are low so I wouldn’t worry too much but they’re not zero so as I said to her, decline everything and only accept calls from loved ones for the time being. Definitely do not accept any calls if the incoming caller is Apple Support.

    Apple honestly just needs to update their captcha software. The captcha on that page is extremely outdated. Most computer systems can read those letters now. That's the reason why modern captcha use different approaches. Selecting different pictures that contain traffic lights for example show the lag time for human input. You have to pause to search for the next picture. If Apple just used Google's recaptcha like the rest of the Internet this would be solved. I guess they just don't want Google on their site

Instead of allow and allow, Apple needs to disallow all disallow and disable.

You can delude yourself into pretending that it's not, but neither Microsoft nor Google have this problem, as they've already added rate limits and cooldowns on how often you can make another request ages ago that gets longer the more times you try. This is pure incompetence on Apple's part exclusively and they should be embarrassed for not addressing it long before it was exploited.

They thought it was a weird address for me to be using, but also assumed it was my current standard email address. I wouldn't even have known it had been shared if they hadn't started using it!
