I heard them sing last year and thought similar things. They did our Father and he threw in all of these crazy breaths that put many musical lines to their death. Probably the third best college choir in the country though, so pretty good. He is super nice though! Who ever thought that an ego could be displayed in breath marks? lol.
Dr. Hightower directed the 2016 Michigan State Vocal Music Association High School honor choir, and I'm so grateful I was selected to sing under his direction. We also sung this piece. Every phrase, dynamic, interpretation, everything he touched on, was an act of pure artistry. Dr. Hightower is by far the best director I've ever had. Nobody can conduct Danny Boy better.
BEAUTIFUL version of this song. so well conducted and sung. I'm trying to find the version my chorus sang in high school. this is the closest to far....I need to find it!!!!
Also, the reason for these decisions reflect the text and not the line. If one did not include these "lifts" as we called them, all of the words would be stuck together creating words that are not real. This happens at 1:13, "Oh Danny boy (comma) oh Danny boy" as it is written in the music. Therefore you would add a small lift because of the comma and because the next word begins with a vowel. If you did not it would sound like this "Oh Danny boyoh Danny boy". We want two words, not boy-ee-oh
at 00:10, why would someone choose to take breath at the expense of a musical line? Same thing at :34 and 1:13 If it is/was written that way, I'd say the same thing to Wagner. When the women sing the melody, that is the perfect example of not breaking apart such a musical line and let them sing! I love the unison at :15 At :26 the basses seemed to have left the building. In fact, the basses in this video are the weakest section. It's not that forward sound you usually hear from them.
@choirgeek2012 I would be interested in your thoughts as to what "baffles" you regarding this conductor's choice of "musical things". Please be more specific about what "musical choices" you find "suspect" and why. Hoping to learn something that I'm not hearing.
The tone was really good. They were very clear. The vowel pronunciations were very clear and crisp. The sopranos were not pitchy at all. You could hear each part individually. They all sang loud so we could hear them. Their mouths were wide and open. I also noted they were all wearing matching clothes. Wearing matching clothes makes them look more professional. I thought this was a good performance
Every time I hear the choir under this guys direction, I'm baffled at why he chooses to do some musical things. Choir sounds great. It's just that his musical choices are sometimes very suspect. We do love that Luther sound though!
The harmony is so mesmerizing and soothing! Can't stop listening to it. Thanks so much for the great performance!!
All of Luther's choirs are absolutely stunning.
Bravo

Beautiful Song and wonderful performance!
I love this song so much. I feel like it's underappreciated.
Simply perfection, Beautiful.

when was this event? and where?
Nice Tone quality and sonority, it's a bit quick however
