I swear to god finding a tutorial that actually explained this and not just folding the freaking shirt fabric over 20 million times was harder than it needed to be, thank you.
What on earth would I do without your wonderful tutorials?? You've got me back on track more times than you'd believe. Thank you for sharing your talent.
This sweet woman, "Professor Pinchushion" has the very best shirt construction tutorial that I have ever seen anywhere. I've watched her wonderful tutorials for the band collar, the button band, with the button hole included and how to start the bottom hem after turning the band inside out after the little square cut at the bottom. It is FANTASTIC and really clear on this video. Thank you so much for the wonderful video. You are helping so many of us who need this guidance! I wish for you much success!
I remember when I decided to properly get into sew, I spent hours on end watching your videos (before I'd even bought a sewing machine). Haha! Thanks for all the help you've given me!
Thank you so much! You explain how to do this very well! I was stuck (my pattern directions didn’t explain it very well) and I normally would call my Mom and ask her for help but she passed away-so you are the next best thing!
I swear you have the best way to explain things! I came here because I was really confused about my pattern directions... the pattern I used says to attach the button band last- after the collar, since in theory were using the collar as the 'middle point', but it doesn't look that good... next time I'm disregarding that and doing the button band first like you did here. Fortunately I haven't done the hem yet, so I'll follow your instructions. Thank you!
Brilliant...thank you very much for this...first time iv done this and couldnt have done it without this video, my pattern instructions made no sense.....iv also done the collar with your other video...thank you proff
Thank you soooo much for your video on the button band, I was working on a skirt that has a button band down the front middle of the skirt, Being new to sewing button bands I have yet to sew. The instructions on my pattern was VERY confusing and unclear on how this was supposed to be done and did not make sense!!! Than I came across your video on the button band and AMAZINGLY it is so simple to do following your video!!! I was about to either change the skirt design and take out the button band or ditch the whole project but not now. Loving it!!!
This is my 3rd tutorial I've seen of yours and I'm hooked. They are so well done. In this one I noticed you stitched as close as possible to the edge of the button band. I'm guessing this is where the problem of curling over comes from in ready-mades. They are stitched so much farther from the edge. I imagine the interfacing also helps and wonder of the cheap store stuff has none. I'm going to add a row of stitching to my husbands new shirt, on the inside edge, but the "free" edge - there's nothing to stitch it down to and I wonder if there is a trick for that - other than always ironing of course!
Hi professor, Thanks for your video. Does the front pattern have seam allowance down the centre part that's cut? And would the technique be the same for the other side of the front pattern? I'm trying to understand how the bands would overlap when the shirt is together. Thank you for any help. Your tutorials are very well made.
+KrisMarie sorry for the delay! My computer died and I just got a new one, but I'm back now!yes, you're going to have seam allowance in your pattern anywhere there will be a seam. If I were to take a whole front bodice, cut it down the center and add seam allowance to it, I could add my own button band pieces and they would still overlap when the shirt is done. Hope this helps!
Should the front band piece be the same LENGTH as the front bodice piece that it's being sewn to? I have a commercial pattern for a shirt that I'm working on and not only is the front band piece longer than the bodice but the notches don't match up. I'm trying to figure out if this is an error in the pattern pieces.
Craftigyrl Yes, I would say that the larger the button, the bigger the band. I would say that a 1/4" on each side of the button would be safe but you can play it by ear and see what you like best.
the collar is what finishes the top half of the button placket and the hem will finish the bottom half. I haven't seen an example yet where you do the collar prior to putting a button placket. :/
it would be whatever your button placket finished width would be...for one side. You don't have to do both sides because the plackets overlap. Your placket size is up to you because it really depends on what size buttons you want to use. An easy way is to first pick the buttons and then add 1/8 -1/4 inch on each side of the button, depending on what you prefer. For example, I use 1" buttons and I want 1/4" showing on each side of the button. That means my finish button placket showing is 1 1/2". (do not confuse this for the width of your placket pattern. You would need to double this and add seam allowance.) So I would remove 1 1/2" minus seam allowance from the center front of the pattern. So if my seam allowance is 5/8", I would take 1 1/2" minus 5/8", which gives me 7/8". I would only remove 7/8" from the center front of my shirt pattern. I'm doing it this way because if I just take off 1 1/2" from the pattern, I then would need to add the seam allowance back on and I'm just doing it in one step instead of two...otherwise, your shirt may end up too small. Whenever you add a new seam somewhere, you always need to add seam allowance to the new lines to ensure you end up with the same fit. I hope I didn't make it too confusing. The point is, yes, you can definitely alter a shirt to do this, it just requires a little math :)
just the video i've been looking for! do you have a tutorial to make this button band but half? because i'm about to make only 3 buttons on the front part.. would be appreciate it.. thanks so much
....do you mean if the button band is on the back of the shirt or is the band on the left and right of the shirt put on the same? In either of those cases, yes, it's all the same steps. thanks!
Hello. Thank you for your very helpful video. Im trying to sew a shirt using vogue 8927. I dont understand why does it say to cut 4 fabric pieces of the front band. Wont 2 pieces work?
hmmm...maybe they not only have the left and right side but also the front band and back band. So instead of taking the band and folding it in half, there's actually a seam on the edge of the front and back being sewn together
so it would be the unfinished length of the shirt and then your desired width (which is really determined by the button size) multiplied by two and then your seam allowance added.
Amrin Dangra I'm glad you found our tutorials helpful. I might do a tutorial on an open shirt but I don't know what that is. When I google it, I get sexy images ;)
pajama shorts are always a good choice as a good first project. If you want a free one, you can do our boxer shorts and download the pattern off our site.

Did you add another band for the buttons. What does that look like?
thank you SO Much. Oh my god i could not figure this out in my pattern instructions.
Thank you so much for your tutorial and thanks for sharing
I love your tutorials!!!
Linda Lechtenberg Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy them :)
thank you so much
I'm just wondering how you do the hem if part of it is already tucked in???? Should we finish the hem before we do the button band?
Hi professor, Thanks for your video. Does the front pattern have seam allowance down the centre part that's cut? And would the technique be the same for the other side of the front pattern? I'm trying to understand how the bands would overlap when the shirt is together. Thank you for any help. Your tutorials are very well made.

Very help full thanks
I get the techie and so when you fallow along
You actually get so you able too.
great tutorial as always..thank you Bill..P.S. my gf loves your nails..
Hii, how do you determine the width of the button band? Does it depend on the size of the buttons being used?
Thanks!! 😊
Craftigyrl Yes, I would say that the larger the button, the bigger the band. I would say that a 1/4" on each side of the button would be safe but you can play it by ear and see what you like best.
How would you do this if you already finished the collar? Also how exactly is the bottom edge getting finished?
the collar is what finishes the top half of the button placket and the hem will finish the bottom half. I haven't seen an example yet where you do the collar prior to putting a button placket. :/
5:05 satisfied me so much, oh my gosh
I have to rewatch this
Love you Tutorials, If I wanted to add this to an existing pattern, how much would I have to reduce the front width by?
it would be whatever your button placket finished width would be...for one side. You don't have to do both sides because the plackets overlap. Your placket size is up to you because it really depends on what size buttons you want to use. An easy way is to first pick the buttons and then add 1/8 -1/4 inch on each side of the button, depending on what you prefer. thank you but this confused me. Are you able to do a video on this?
just the video i've been looking for! do you have a tutorial to make this button band but half? because i'm about to make only 3 buttons on the front part.. would be appreciate it.. thanks so much
Hello! I'm not sure if this question was asked, but do you follow the same steps for the back button band? Thank you! :)
....do you mean if the button band is on the back of the shirt or is the band on the left and right of the shirt put on the same? In either of those cases, yes, it's all the same steps. thanks!
On shirt sewing is one side always longer than the other?
I mean, where the band is, perhaps for lapping
Thank you, it's very helpful.

so it would be the unfinished length of the shirt and then your desired width (which is really determined by the button size) multiplied by two and then your seam allowance added.
can it also include a facing along the front?
your nails are beautiful too!!! do you also have a channel for your nail designs? :)
nope, just sewing. thank you! :)
