Didn't even know this device existed, but, wow, looks cool. Might try to grab it in the future.
Super cool huh? Love to see independently produced hardware like this.
"jolly little packages" xD perfect way to put it. wondering if they're going to put out a new version of the handheld in a few years that's "upgraded" with a backlit screen, or maybe even a slightly larger version..
Yeah that'd be amazing, right? It seems to have been successful, it's so exciting to have an independent player in hardware. Someone on Twitter recommended the mirroring app where you can play via a computer so I'm gonna try that out.
You hit on two problems I flagged when it was first announced, no backlight and too small for those of us with older eyes. It seems to me like it'd be a perfect object to keep a child entertained in the backseat during a long road trip but _feels_ like it's a device made for adults. And while I appreciate the bespoke-feeling, for-cool-people-only vibe the design language suggests, I think, for me at least, it steps a little too far into the form-over-function side of the equation. And my last concern, given the specificity of the device, the games being designed specifically for it, made by notable game designers, the archivist in me worries these games will mostly be lost to time should the device fail to catch on widely. Undoubtedly cool though.
PS - I wouldn't have made any note of your hands had you not drawn attention to them. Be thankful wikihands doesn't share the same cultural cache as wikifeet. ;)
Haha my dry old hands looked worse in the edit than at RUclips resolution probably :)
Someone on Twitter recommended I pair the Playdate to a computer - you can mirror it to a big screen. So I'll try that out and report back.
I'm excited about it as an experimental space for developers to make a side project than doesn't take three years plus - it's super cool for people to be making smaller creative games as side projects.
Even though I have my gripes, I generally think this console is a good thing for sure.
@@GamingInTheWild Does the mirroring work wirelessly or wired? Thanks.
@@kpeterrafael I think wired only but I'm not certain - USB-C
Great review. Congrats on 1k!
Thanks, appreciate it 😊 all gamers want 4k and I do to
Nice vid. That case color is tasty! $29 bucks but mine is still immaculate after a year of bashing it about :)
Awesome!
This looks incredible!
Complete with scraggly nailed hand modelling, think I need a manicure if I'm doing hardware reviews :')
@@GamingInTheWild 😂 the joys of RUclips
a fresh review
Thank you for the review. Just wish it wasn't so expensive even though it may be worth the price.
Yeah, pricey little thing! Maybe good to ask for it on Christmas or a birthday as a treat :)
I often say the same. Thanks for the reply.
If you sit with your back to a window on a sunny afternoon, the screen looks amazing. But yeah, getting the right set up when it's dimly lit is a bit of a struggle, much like the game boy
Yeah. In the days of backlit screens, I think I'm kind of over having to think about it.
🥳🙌
I'm surprised the lever sticks out the side of the case; doesn't that risk snagging on things?
It folds into the body and sits fairly flush
The price of $200 + shipping & taxes it's pretty wild honestly. And considering they are sending them out from USA, for many countries the price ends up being double. That's literally nuts!
Sorry to be that guy but it's figuratively nuts, not literally nuts. If it was literally nuts, lotta squirrels out there could afford a Playdate :')
It's a collector/enthusiast product, for sure. We all know console manufacturers price consoles as loss-leaders for sub services and the store front, and that kind of pricing isn't available to a little company like this, so it's probably pretty realistic even if it seems expensive. It's everything else being cheap that's unrealistic, in a way.
@@GamingInTheWild Haha indeed with the nuts part :))
Your comment make sense, but still all the consoles that make a loss were last gen consoles when sold, meaning just the hardware (mostly cpu & gpu) were over their sale price a bit. But to sell something for $200, that has the hardware worth a few bucks, kinda makes me wonder. And they also sell games too on their store, not like all games would be free or included after sale...
But honestly I would even buy it for $200, but living outside of the USA, giving me a quote for shipping, taxes, customs and vat of a bit over double the price... cmon $400+ is a bit too much no matter what... They should have at least 2 distribution centers around the world after USA, one in Europe and one in Asia, and I'm sure they could pretty fast double or even triple their user count.
@@kpeterrafael yeah, I'm sure they'd love to have better international distribution! It's super expensive and very cool, I really am rooting for them, wouldn't it be exciting to have an indie breakthrough hardware manufacturer! So cool. And yep, super expensive.
@@GamingInTheWild i'm rooting for them too, like i do for every small company that have an amazing product.
I love this device, but so far I have gotten two defect units where either the D-pad is bad or the cranck. Hopefully the third one will be good quality.
Sorry to hear, that sounds like super bad luck
Don’t smoke‼️
😁 I know, I know
