    Downcut bit was forcing all the dust down into the hole, add the friction and speed and it was basically like a bow drill for fire starting. Happy Maketmber! I've really enjoyed this series.

    Soldering is an excellent skill to learn and not fear as it opens up some options for creating cool items. But it takes some practice to get good at as well. Good on you for jumping in a trying it, but also trying it on camera! Man, October 2nd is going to be so boring without any more Maketember videos.

    HD!! I have been going back and watching all the Maketember vids, and I have to say that I am so impressed at how informative they are, in a variety of ways. On top of products, designs, maker methodology, cnc tidbits, etc. I really appreciate the cost analysis and pricing portion. You are fast becoming one of my favored YT channels, even though I do not have a cnc.
    I admit I am a bit jealous sometimes, but I take it as a challenge to see if I can do a few of those things without it (not for resale, just for the house). I don't hate the Llama but ill pass on this one. Wish I saw this a few years ago though. I would have made one for my kids. I love my new bow knife, and I never would have made one if it was not for you sir. Kudos.

    Hamilton, excellent soldering tutorial. LOL😅 …seriously, great video and I’m glad to see that you can laugh at yourself where you struggle. I haven’t looked at all the comments, however a good soldering station will help you in the long run, as well as tool normally referred to as a “third hand”. Essentially it is a set/series of clips (minimum of 2) that you can position to hold your wire and magnet (in your case), so that you have free hands to wield the solder and solder iron.
    Glad to see the Maketember churning along.

    Hamilton,
    I've enjoyed watching your Maketember series so far, it's given me some great ideas and will buy your plans when all are up to help support the channel.
    If you ever start doing more soldering, invest in a decent soldering station and you'll find that your skills immediately improve drastically.
    I never leave my CNC routers running unattended. Many years ago, I was running a long job, so went out and sat in a chair in the yard played ball with the dog, but the shed door was open and I was within 30 feet of the machine. I saw some smoke coming out of the door and jumped up, went in, stopped the job. The dust shoe had come lose from its magnetic setup and the rim was rubbing on the collet and caused it to char heavily in one spot, not sure how much longer it would've been before it caught fire.

    Rather than growing a third arm, the easier way to solder is the leave the iron in its cradle and bring the wire and solder to it. Once the wire is coated in solder, put down the solder spool and pick up the iron. Heat the contact point on the magnet for a second then bring the soldered wire to it. I like "Cutting Edge Woods" comment below about adding some hot glue for added support.

    Use a Pecking motion when drilling 1-2mm a time, gives relief to the wood chips & allows the bit to cool. Ideally also use a single or double flute spiral upcut bit. I'm not sure if downtown Jennifer has enough cut face, it looks very flat and not ideal for plunge

    Hamilton -- This month has been so inspiring! I have two scouts in the family trying to earn their way to the national jamboree next year, and they are going to make a bunch of these on the CNC and take them to craft fairs! Can't wait for the whole package to be available! Hopefully we win a OneFinity which looks a lot better than my belt driven machine, which is has been a separate hobby for way too long -- one where I also learned how to solder just to make the CNC work....

    Hamilton, absolutely love this series. So many makers only show their perfect creations. I love how I've learned some "hey watch out for this" or "so...here's what really happened". Those can be frustrating in the shop but I've always learned from my mishaps. Also learning from yours.
    These lacing toys are great! Did you round over the edges? I thinknI will but was going to ask how difficult that elephant trunk was to smooth the corners.
    Thanks again!

    • @HamiltonDilbeck

      I think they make some "mini" roundover bits that would fit into the tight curves. I just did some hand sanding!

  • @Anglesmith_Customs
    @Anglesmith_Customs 2 года назад

    When doing a drilling operation it's best to do a "peck drilling". I've ran this in Fusion 360 with my 1/8" bit without issue but you may need to look up in how to do it with the software that you use.

I can't wait to see what you make next!

    To maybe add an extra touch, I'd use a v bit to chamfer the frontside holes. The back would be more tricky. Maybe just chamfer bit or countersink bit in a cordless drill. That way the laces would thread through like butter.

      @@davejsullivan It’s pretty simple honestly. I just put 2 steel dowels along the long axis of the project and flip it on those. Just make some known reference points in your drawings and it’ll be a cake walk.

    You forgot to include the cost of the bit in the toy prices. ;-)
    Fun watching, sometimes painful too. Not sure that soldering joint will hold up over time, it appeared that you used the solder more like a glue, dropping it on to the magnet side rather than heating up the metal in the magnet. You really want the metal to be hot and touch the solder to it, that will draw the solder to the heat and get a good bond generally. However, in this case you really did have a tough situation as sufficient heat may have melted the plastic holder and can also de-magnetize the magnet. I wonder if an electrically conductive epoxy would be a better solution?

    I'm not concerned about your soldering skills as much as surprised at the limited number of bits you've revealed you have over the month! You need to find a sponsor to drop a good variety of bits on you, with backups of a few common ones. They can sponsor your Make-olidays series.

    • @HamiltonDilbeck
      @HamiltonDilbeck  2 года назад

      So funny enough I did think about that a lot before starting the whole series. I didn't want to have a ton of bits, I wanted beginners to see that you can do a lot of things with just a few bits!

    • @DavZell
      @DavZell 2 года назад

      @@HamiltonDilbeck Fair enough, but having ONE up cut isn't asking TOO much! ;-) In starting out, I watched a lot of videos and saw what was being used a lot. I decided I should have a combination of 1/4 and 1/8" bits in flat endmills and ball nose, with upcut for the clearing bits. I also got a tapered 1/32" ball nose and 60 and 90 degree V-bits as part of a set of 8 that covered a lot of these needs from Spetools on Amazon for $80. Being a beginner and anticipating some breakage, a got an extra of a couple just in case. All in, I'm comfortably under $150 and ready for most things I anticipate wanting to try inn2D and 3D. Spetools seems to get mentioned regularly as a decent starter brand.
