    • @theripcord03
      @theripcord03 Год назад

      Not really, the engines on a Chinook and Blackhawk work the same as every other helicopter. They turn the rotors. The rotors sit on a swash plate that is controlled by the cyclic and collective, and via pilot input the swash plate adjusts each blades angle accordingly. The Chinook is just a tandem rotor rather than an antitorque rotor setup.

  • @MrChainsawAardvark
    @MrChainsawAardvark Год назад

    I guess its a bit much to ask this program to simulate retreating blade stall conditions, but there is a reason why why helicopters generally can't break 300 mph. Basically in the scheme of things, half the rotor is going forward and adding your velocity, the other half is doing the reverse and subtracting. Since the blades have a certain critical (stall) speed like any wing, that becomes a problem. Furthermore, helicopters move by essentially trading lift for directionality ie tilt the rotor hub to get 85%up/15% forward. Most super fast copters have a combination of wings (ie the Mi-24, the NASA testbed you mentioned) and a pusher engine (ie AH-56 Cheyenne Prototype) so the lift rotors are not burdened as much.

    Interestingly, heli also means "sun", and "copter" is a derivation of "Copt" in Middle English, so the word means something like "sun of the Coptics" (who are the Native, non-Arab Egyptians). Because that is what happens when you use Greek or affixes; madness ensues in the language.

  • @cool2frog
    @cool2frog Год назад

    Look at the hydra aircraft from captain America the first avenger. That’s how you make a supersonic helicopter. Think of a rocket without the engine, and add plane wings, then add rocket or jet propelled rotors in the middle, but instead of doing the modular wings the way you did, attach them to something that will rotate and then hold them at 45 degree angles from level, while keeping the rotor propelling engines either level, or at the same angle as the rotor; mount 2 of these rotors in the middle, but slightly more towards the top, as counter rotating rotors, and then make the fuselage fins and wings have regular plane controls. The key is to build it vertical as a tail-sitter design, with the spine of the helicopter at the exact same alignment as the axis of rotation of the rotors.

    I’m not a helicopter expert, but there’s usually a bearing that connects the blades to the main body to counter the rotation and keep the vehicle stable. This is assisted by the constant rotation of the rear propellor

    • @nikkiofthevalley
      @nikkiofthevalley Год назад

      It's isn't just a bearing, it requires specific geometry and has to be attached in a very specific way to the blades. What that solves is dissymmetry of lift, it has nothing to do with counteracting the rotation imparted on the craft by the main rotor, that is purely the tail rotor. Dissymmetry of lift isn't even simulated by Trailmakers, so adding the mechanism that mitigates it doesn't do anything.
      I'm not an expert either, but I have spent hundreds of hours improving my helis in Besiege, so if that counts for anything, there you go.

  • @greenaum
    @greenaum Год назад

    If you put a spinning engine atop another identical one going the other way, the top one technically wouldn't move at all. Helicopters that do that (and I think it's only toys) drive the top rotor from the same motor, using a cog attached to the outside surface of the rotor's stem, while the lower one is attached on the inside. I dunno if that's even possible in real helicopters, surely the turbulence would be terrible, and you'd have the top rotor compressing air into the space above the lower one, where the lower one is trying to create lower pressure. The only twin-rotor helicopters I'm aware of use one at either end of a long body. They intercept each others' airspace but are geared to never collide with each other. They do that for greater lift for carrying heavy cargo to places a plane couldn't land.
    I suppose you could carry it on to a triangular craft, or square, or however further, if you really wanted to. Past a certain length it's not practical to build helicopter blades, cos the wing tips end up going travelling too fast.
    I suppose you could go with a giant poly-copter, as long as each one adds power overall, you might get something useful. Well, "useful".

    RCE when designing the helicopter you forgot about one major thing. You forgot about the ability to change the pitch angle of the rotor blades. You see increasing the pitch angle of the rotor bales increases their lift force significantly. In fact by changing the pitch angle of the rotor blades also called collective is how real helicopter change the amount of lift the main rotor generates. So I suggest you add ability to change the angle of your rotor blades and be amazed at the difference. I'm willing to bet that even your basic helicopter could reach speeds of over 150 MPH if you add yourself ability for changing the pitch angle of your rotor blades.

That will stop the rotation of the helicopter. If you speed them up to above 30 it will spine the helicopter slowly in one direction, slow below 30 the helicopter will spin the other way. That's how real helicopters work anyways

    your speed is going to be heavily limited by the drag profile of the helicopter blades / wing pieces toward the airstream - try rotating the wing / blade toward what it considers the 'forward' direction and see how red those arrows go
    given what trailmakers' aerodynamic modeling is like, though, i don't necessarily think it would help to change the angle of attack of the wing / blade the way it does in KSP - it might just not be possible to make a very fast helicopter in trailmakers

    Try adding engines to the back of the helicopter to push it forward

    So you broke records going horizontal and upwards? Now you need to break a record for DOWNARDS! Make a creation that gets you a lot of height and see how fast you can descend with it!
