McCall was LL’s wake-up call that he needed to change trainers and become a more skilled, technical boxer. If LL hadn’t made the change, he would have been remembered as a talented, big HW, who was technically flawed and had a suspect chin. However he hired Manny, became a tremendous technician in the ring who held onto the title for a long time. His style wasn’t as crowd pleasing as his pre-McCall style was, but he learned a more technical, safety-first style that worked for him. However he had a number of exciting fights and he went onto be a top 10 HW great. The McCall fight was shocking, but Lennox got the message, and it helped him go from a technically flawed champion to a tremendous technical fighter with a big punch who held onto the title for a long time.

After his withdrawal fight against Lennox, Oliver fought two fights in the same year in 1997, and he only suffered a mental breakdown in his career once, against Lennox.
