At dark times such as these, it is good to be reminded of the greatness slumbering in the human spirit. Words can not describe this piece, it has to be experienced.
He may not have written as much as the acknowledged greats like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, but unlike them, every single opus is a masterpiece of its kind.
Korngold.
Lifted from the 1939 film "Elizabeth & Essex". Glorious piece and speaks to an ageing composer who,14 years later, is dealing with a broken heart. RIP my friend.
Sure. RUclips has a few videos of "The Private Lives of Elizabeth & Essex". You'll enjoy the 'original' so much more because it is lively and joyful. Probably a happier time in the composer's life. BTW: IMHO, one of the most beautiful movies scores ever!
Alex Ross, writing in The New Yorker (www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/08/19/erich-wolfgang-korngold-the-opera-composer-who-went-hollywood) describes the Symphony in F sharp major as the last great symphony of the German Romantic tradition.
