I literally chucked when the phone rang. I was taught to crochet by my great grandmother and she told me I was doing it wrong because I couldn’t do the pencil grip. My son wanted (28) me to show him how to crochet and a relatively of his wife told him he was holding his yarn wrong. I just think of llama mama Kayla who has to learn a new way every time she loses a finger. We all do things differently.

You are so right about the way you hold your hook or your tension, I hold mine like a pencil, my daughter holds hers like a knife, we are both right because that’s the way we are most comfortable doing it.

I have MS and after decades of making intricate designs with multiple yarns, I can no longer remember a 2 row repeat. I hope my grandchildren took care of those beautiful flowered lacey afghans and my daughters take care of those doilies.

I was taught at a young age to crochet by my grandmother, when I stayed with her one summer but a year or so later she came to visit and my mother told her that I was holding the hook wrong. She said the most perfect thing, “It’s okay, whatever is comfortable.” Even at that young age it gave me confidence.

Great review, I actually looked at that hook and decided that I didn't want to spend that much and find out that it was not something I would like. I have several Omi hooks they are long and light, but certain yarns make my hooks squeek, and I can not stand it. I only use them for cotton bamboo yarn. I am a knife holder on my hook. My grandmother was a pencil gripper. She yelled at me, and I finally said, "If you want me to crochet, then leave me alone with how I hold my hook, " It comes out the same way." So she did. I was 8 yrs. Old and have been crocheting since.

What you said about how each person crochets or knits is soooo true! I crochet " weird" compared to how " others" hold their yarn. It's made me feel self conscious to crochet in front of other crocheters. Everyone is unique, let's stop judging❤

My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was 6 or 7. She also tried to teach me how to knit but I wasn’t able to hold both hooks and wrap the yarn around. So I stuck with crochet and I do the knife hold. I think if my grandma had taught me the pencil hold I wouldn’t have been able to crochet. I have very tiny hands so knife hold works better for me. I started teaching my daughter when she came to visit at Christmas time. I’m finally going to see her again to spend a week with her and my grandbabies they’re not babies anymore but they’re my babies. Anyways she asked if I would teach my granddaughters too when I come down. I’m so excited to past crochet down to them, I can’t wait. I just wish I lived closer so I could go over there more often to help them. Anyways after listening to you talk about holding the hook and how pencil or knife is whatever feels more comfortable for them. I plan on showing them both ways and let them decide which way is easier for them. I can say I really don’t know how to hold it pencil style I’ll just give them the general idea and let them choose. Thank you so much for this information and lesson. I never really gave it any thought. Thanks again and I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Hugs

My grandmother taught me to both knit and crochet when I was maybe 6-8. She taught me to knit Contenetial style As it is similar to crochet in how you hold your needle and yarn. She taught me the knife hold. People would tell me i was wrong And my grandma told me as long as your Tension is even And the project looks good nobody will be able to tell what style you use to get the project done. When it come to crochet if you show me what you are doing I can do it. Trying to do crochet anything with a pattern was a big struggle buss. I am now 62, 4 years ago I found out she taught me European crochet terms. What a difference that makes when you read instructions \patterns.if you know that lol. I just convert all my patterns to EU and I do fine now. Anyway when the project is dine. Nobody will know how you held what and if you used US or EU terms. Just that it looks nice and was made with love. THAT is all that matters. Ignore the snobs. 😊

Good morning, sorry I was on my soapbox, but that is one thing that irritates me. I have been crocheting for 57 years and several times I’ve been told that I hold hook and yarn wrong. Then one day someone overheard that person, saw me get upset and that’s when she told me no crochet or knit police. Do whatever is comfortable for you and your project will turn out just like theirs or even better. Have a great day!

She said yes and he told her that’s the way she crochets and it’s fine. She went to a school in which they daughter her to crochet their way but that’s not mine. People crochet you the most comfortable For you. Jenn gave a beautiful day

Jen, I just love your frankness. I love to crochet and have been crocheting for over 30 years. BUT I learn as an adult and only because my BFF taught me one afternoon how to make a granny square and read instructions. She learn from a book with pictures and instructions. I know I don't crochet correctly. I hold my yarn wrong, but I am comfortable and enjoy what I do and that is all that matters. There is NO Right or Wrong way to crochet, just the Fun way to crochet.
Now curious and want a book of crochet stitches. Found this online at a thrift book store. Might get it. Vogue Dictionary of Crochet Stitches by Anne Matthews. I mostly learn from the internet and youtube these days. But a book with pictures, like it. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.

As soon as I heard the phone, I knew it was Mr. Cinnamon 😄I was teaching 2 of my grandsons, who are brothers, how to crochet this past winter. I crochet knife grip so of course that was what I was showing them. The 17 yr old crocheted just fine holding the hook knife grip. The 15 yr old ended up holding his pencil grip as he found that way easier for him. So, there you go.🤷🏼‍♀️ I also find less wrist movement using knife grip.
I like longer handle hooks like yourself as they fit better in my hand, no digging into the butt of my hand. Thank you for showing us your beautiful hooks and the book.😊
Wishing you a beautiful blessed day 🙏🏻🥰💖

Good Morning Jennifer. I’m a seasoned crocheter. I am so glad that you brought up charts. I can both read crochet patterns and crochet charts. I strongly encourage anyone that is new to crocheting to learn how to read both. I was about six years old when I learned how to crochet, however I wasn’t taught what any of the stitches were called. I taught myself how to read both patterns and charts. I recently downloaded a crochet pattern that I loved, however the pattern didn’t make ant sense to me. Thank God that the pattern writer added a chart. Following the chart my crochet item came out beautiful.

Two weeks ago, I purchased a 5.5MM, HiyaHiya aluminum hook. Well, now I am hooked on HiyaHiya! They are pricy for an aluminum hook, even on Amazon. The 5.5MM wad $11.50. I found a returned set of HiyaHiya’s for $39.00, with a beautiful cloth case. Unfortunately, one hook was defective. I ordered another set, at regular price, but they set the wrong set. So, I would be patient ordering sets. The sets come from a third party. Thank goodness, it is easy to return with Amazon. It is amazing how smoothly these hooks are. I can’t manage ergonomic hooks, my brain hurts even trying them. Since my brain aneurysm, it is like my brain says, “what is this, in our hand?” Thanks for bringing up this subject. No two people even hold a pencil or pen the same. Love spending time with you. Loved the opening, “If you know, you know.” 😂😆 Love you, Jennifer. Have a beautiful blessed day. Hugs! 💖🌹❤️

I crochet pencil grip; I knit by throwing. I am righthanded. I taught my VERY lefthanded daughter to crochet and knit. She was having trouble so I suggested a knife grip for crochet and it workedfor her. Her freshman year in college a friend showed her continental style knitting and she never looked back. When I broke my right wrist several years ago I had to use knife grip until I healed, but it really slowed me down because I'm not used to it.

Happy Wednesday Jen. I’m in love with that hook it’s gorgeous I definitely need to know in the long run how it fits the hand. Also I’m a pencil gripper who holds the hook a bit unconventional for a pencil gripper because the typical way hurts my wrist and cramps my fingers. So I hold it higher and less tight. You’re correct in saying it’s based on what’s comfortable and I wish people like that would just sit all the way down in a corner and think lol

I'm so glad you showed the Merit hooks. Ever since the Odyssey hooks were discontinued from Furls, I have been kicking myself for not getting a second 5.0mm (H) hook when I could. I don't know why I thought I had but I had not. So I've been on the search for a similar hook,
and this looks perfect. I was able to get one similar to the design you purchased for less than $12! I hit purchase before the price went up, LOL. I like the chunky handles for the same reason you do, I crochet with an overhand grip as well and tend to choke the life out of my skinnier
hooks. I don't mind wood hooks with the epoxy or whatever they coat it with to make it so shiny and slippery. The Furls Streamline wood hooks are slick in a similar way and I have not noticed much slowing of speed using them. Oh, when I taught myself how to knit there were just magazines and poorly written instruction books, no internet back then. I twisted my stitches too, the purl stitches were just twisted knit stitches. Needless to say, it did not make ribbing. The first year I was married, my husband came home and told me about a yarn shop inside the cable tv shop, and the owner showed me how to purl correctly. So, I feel your pain, but I would have loved to have 500 people tell me what I was doing wrong as long as one person showed me how to do it right. LOL. I'm just 65, so not old, just middle age. Thank goodness for internet tutorials, it sure makes learning a new technique a lot easier.

You are correct. I knit into the back loop also. It is easier. When you have a pattern where you need to knit into the back of the loop on your needle in only some stitches, and knit/purl in other stitches, your pattern will be different if you knit into the back only
    On all stitches.

Hi Jennifer, I was shown to pencil grip and hated it. It hurt so bad. I knife hold and no pain. Like you said, do what is comfortable to you. Beautiful hook 😊

I was told for 50 years I knit and crochet wrong. I taught myself and my items came out nice. I had my own knitting business in NH, but now live in NC not much call for what I knit. I also taught myself to crochet.

Aw…Mr. Cinnamon wanted to hear your voice! I’ve been told I hold hook and yarn weird. I was taught by my left handed mother. I’m right handed. I always just shrugged and kept on….

That’s right miss stitches. My gramma said it was all the snobs that held the crochet hook like that to look elegant while crocheting even if it was not their natural way of holding it..

And there are beautiful people that are so amazing, like Llama Mama Kayla (love that woman) that hold there hook different than anybody because she only has a thumb on her dominant hand and a thumb and pinky on her non dominant hand but crochets beautiful projects. So Jen is point on. However you do what you do is the correct way for YOU, just keep on producing YOUR art♥🧶

I just crochet how I was taught and I’m comfortable with it. Since looking at RUclipss I see all kinds of different ways to hold the hook. I don’t know what’s the proper way and I don’t know that I care. I hold my hook like a pencil.

Beautiful hooks, I don't think I could use them kind if hooks. I'm trying them Prym ones. That book looks interesting.
