Garbage Truck Driver POV: Rocker Switches & Joystick Controls

- Sooo...this time I wanted to try a different concept and try to step into the genre of POV style videos. Thought this would be a nice trial video.
Originally with this concept I tried with a hard mount that was placed inside the cab. However the adhesive for the mount wasn't strong enough so the mount and my phone kept getting knocked off the rear glass with every stop. Plus it wasn't getting the full perspective of the rocker switches on the right hand side (which is what I primarily wanted to capture since McNeilus does NOT offer rocker switches at all on their older trucks). I tried every conceivable surface in the cab, but it either resulted in copious vibration, or was too unstable to be mounted on properly.
Luckily I had a head mount I brought along just in case. I did a first initial test run of roughly 10 minutes prior to this video, then I re-adjusted the camera angle and the zoom depth which came out to what you see in this video here. I followed him for a while until I felt like I got enough footage.
With his particular truck, I'm not sure why or when they decided to put rocker switches on his truck, but it seems to work quite well in conjunction with the joystick. I notice he uses the joystick for all controls except retracting and raising the arm. I'm not sure if it's a Heil OEM control box that they somehow jerry-rigged or if it's an aftermarket part. It wasn't just mounted into place all ghetto style either, there's a proper bracket that's bolted underneath the hand egress/entrance handle. All in all it's a very interesting instance of a McNeilus truck being outfitted with a three button layout rocker switch, which is basically almost unheard of, even in their brand new trucks.
Special thank you to VJ for allowing me to film!
Enjoy the video!

ummmmm, one of the best go pro video's i've seen period. Great work with this Brian, this turned out so good!
👍
I got good Front load POV. Come check it out!
The movements…this dude does not stop moving. Quick truck and quick driver leaves us with this fantastic video! Love all the air sounds from the joystick. Bring back memories from operating the old Autoreaches of WM Yolo. Great video my man…also some sweet cart variety. Love the IPL at the beginning!
yeah he's quite efficient, he's typically done with this route by 10:30AM on most days. though I got a comment from another driver that watching the video made his head spin because of how much he was moving lol
This is genuinely a great gopro video. Most are kinda boring but this has it all! Awesome to see a legit pov. Nice work!
thanks! his constant motion does keep it entertaining and not mundane
I used to live in San Jose. As a kid I would come to the window and take a peak at garage trucks and out of all of them this one was my most favorite because of the sound the engine makes. Watching this video certainly gave me a tiny memory of my childhood
Neat! Wouldn't mind watching more of this honestly, the first person perspective is pretty interesting
there's some other companies I might try in the future when I have more time, though it's an issue of company policy and supervisors being willing/unwilling to allow drivers wearing cameras
Good morning brother nice video champ glad you started off inside the cab and this one collecting garbage Trashcan and you did amazing job
Definitely some after market, jerry rigged like you said rocker switch controls since Heil usually puts 4 rocker switches on their controls.. as long as the rocker switch control box doesn’t have a wires and stuff to where it makes it movable with anything, it should be good. Came out pretty good, I’ll give you that!
not sure where they got that box from, but his truck is the only McNeilus in the entire fleet with one so I'm not sure if it was an experimental product from them
@@GarbageTrucksofSanJosewe had 4 320 Autoreachs which we sold a they had the new product from mcneilus we still got CCC Autoreachs that a the same joystick like the one in the video
Love the reving sound of this truck.
smooth
The only 2 McNeilus trucks that i've seen with rocker switches is this, and a ZR that my company has on a few trucks
Cool! Maybe do a hopper vid as an alternative?
most likely not possible due to company policy concerning driver safety and device liability (most companies forbid drivers entering or reaching into the hopper for any reason while on route)
i always liked to pov style videos
Dose he have a RUclips?
yo this is my Job now and on lunch break i ALWAYS watch you're videos, Keep Up the good work! and hard work but i work for Montana's Waste Services (MWS) I Drive A Python.
What are you doing with right hand is that a hand brake?
Just panel controls for the asl arm. They work pretty good, and often times better than the stick.
What’s the box on your right side you are pressing?
Rocker switches
@@danmelbourne7597I understand that. What is its function?
@@scott19000It controls the arm on the truck, and each button will do 1 thing usually although up/jog will usually bring the can in and dump it. Unlike my truck where it will dump the can in the street if i don’t pull it back first.
Did the driver let you drive the truck?
To bad it's only a side load, those and front dumpster ones are cale walk. He's literally missing 2 additional joy sticks and controls that I have
Knowing that that company made $7 for every single one of those cans he picked up makes me want to go drop $300k on a garbage truck and get to work lol
38 in 13 minutes is what i got thats 2.9 stops per minute. 😎👍
I thought this was a sim then i didn't so idk
joystik
Awesome video bro.
