(x) means just hitting the strings against the pickup. In this case is important for the song. I overdubbed just a little tiny error at the end, but all the rest is one take (as it is in every cover). I lowered the action for this tune as it's usual for a Flea tone. I didn't lower that much though. I compensated the rest with more strength and snap. You can balance that how you want but with higher action you'll need lots of stamina and technique to not damage yourself. Check the description for gear and more and leave any question you want. I'll answer.

I have to confess I've never been sure of the difference between x and (x) - just so I'm understanding correctly, x is just a muted note, but (x) is almost like a muted slap? Thanks again for another RCHP cover - always glad to have a new one to learn!

@@davidscothern8513 kinda like that. Honestly i don't know if that notation is canon. I just find it useful to differenciate. Yes the idea is to just place the finger on the string with a bit of force it should sound pecussive. It's not thought but mostly a consecuence of playing, let me know if you understand

I know it says in the description about the tone but how do you get the exact funky rattle tone?
Strong attack, I guess?
find a loose point on the strings (usually neck pickup) then play with sharpness (tip of fingers) and snap a little bit. You'll need some explosiveness, strength, but mainly speed of plucking. Most important, lower the action so you don't get worn out. With time you'll be able to do it even with higher action
@@CoverSolutions which is the neck pickup because my bass has a pair of pickups and one thinner like the two on yours

oh probably a JP type i think (pair of little ones + large one?) i just mean closer to the neck. As long as you are closer to the neck, strings will be more loose and getting the snap will be easier
i find it helpful to think of "striking" or "hitting through" the string with my finger as opposed to plucking -- you should apply enough force so that, even unplugged, you'll hear the string hitting either the fretboard or the pickups. That moment of the string physically striking against another hard surface is where the aggressive attack sound of Flea's playing comes.

it will have fret buzz inveitably, but if it's too much your sound will be muffled so don't go that extreme

Unrelated to this specific song but how do you have a "pickup selection" when there is no pickup selector like there is on a guitar?
Or is just which one you're meant to pluck on
Usually you'll have a knob for each pick up (2 in this case) and a volume knob (there may be more for different effects etc but I don't really know what they do tbh). For example; You'll increase the tone on the neck pick up by turning up the tone knob for that pick up (fiddle around with each one if you don't know which one it is) in order to get a more gritty, low and deep bass sound. Hope this helps.
2 out of 4 of the knobs on my bass are pickup volume, so i can mute one and leave the other if i want to so i can have neck or bridge pickup, both, or even mix (that i don't usually do)
@@ethanthiele9284 I have 4 knobs layed out with one at the back and three at the front, and I usually have very low amp volume and every knob turned up other than the bass knob (for this song, and slap songs, depending on how high my pedals equaliser is) and for other songs (fingerstyle) I turn down the knob that is closest to me and turn up the low equaliser, I'm getting used to just having funky fingerstyle/slap tones and less rattly (Queen and things) tones because that's all I really use
It changes a lot though because I have some more specific things I do with my pedal that I won't bother mentioning
