Yes this is hard rock. In the 70s there wasn't even a category "heavy metal". In fact Ozzy and the rest of the group does not like the term heavy metal applied to Black Sabbath. BUT you could say that Black Sabbath invented heavy metal because their sound, their riffs, their imagery was copied by countless bands throughout these decades, and heavy metal music evolved from this. I first heard this song at a party when I was in middle school. My ears perked up when I heard the rain and thunder followed by those awesome opening chords. So heavy, and yes so sinister. Happy Halloween!!

This song is about an experience bassist Geezer Butler had.
This is his words about it.
"I'd been raised a Catholic so I totally believed in the Devil. There was a weekly magazine called Man, Myth and Magic that I started reading which was all about Satan and stuff. That and books by Aleister Crowley and Dennis Wheatley, especially The Devil Rides Out ... I'd moved into this flat I'd painted black with inverted crosses everywhere. Ozzy gave me this 16th Century book about magic that he'd stolen from somewhere. I put it in the airing cupboard because I wasn't sure about it. Later that night I woke up and saw this black shadow at the end of the bed. It was a horrible presence that frightened the life out of me! I ran to the airing cupboard to throw the book out, but the book had disappeared. After that I gave up all that stuff. It scared me shitless."

Love your reaction and comments. When I first came home from the record shop in 1970 (I was 22 yo), with this album, I listened to it and blew my MIND !! I immediately went back to the record store, and bought the other 4 albums and coveted them for years, till I wore all of them out. I played guitar since 1964, and when I heard the tone on Iommi's Gibson SG guitar I searched for an SG at all the pawn shops. I never passed a pawn shop without looking for an SG till I finallyfound a 1964 with P-90 pickups. and still have that guitar today. Since then I've owned at least 20 SG's, but I currently own two, both 1964's one with the P-90's and the other with PAF Humbuckers. Tone, tone, tone !!

*The funny thing about Ozzy in general, (whether with Black Sabbath or solo), is he's known as "The prince of darkness". Yet as Mrs. Coach pointed out, if you really pay attention and listen, you might learn something. Ozzy sings more about peace, love, anti-war, and ppl learning to get along more than he does about other topics. Don't let the image fool you." 🤘🤘🤘

This album actually led me to be more open minded about music, since before this, my knowledge of Black Sabbath was the simple, catchy tune Paranoid, and the image of Ozzy Osbourne in a blond wig and mascara biting heads off bats. I bought a cheap box set of their 1st album, Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and was hooked. I soon filled out my collection. It's hardly surprising they're called The Beatles of heavy metal, or The Sab Four.
