Possible Story: It all happened so fast. One-minute Ainavol saw the knife of the human close down on him, only for a wall of bones to block his sight. It took so long for them to recede, and all he could think about during that time were the sounds of gaster blaster fire, telepathic slams, and even more bones rising and flying through the air. When they were low enough for him to see things, he was shocked to see Hardmode melt away from an excess amount of determination.
Ainavol didn't want to believe it. Why would Hardmode block him from the attack and not himself? It would've been the far more logical solution to save himself and keep fighting. Why would he waste his last chance of survival for not only himself, but spend it on him? A Sans who lost what it meant to even be a Sans long ago. He just...couldn't understand.
Until he remembered what Hardmode said before the human arrived...
"at the end of the day, i'm just sans, sans the skeleton, and old habits die hard."
Now it made sense to Ainavol. He looked over to Last Breath and KAB to reaffirm his suspicions. The scars they received from the human's attack were grizzly, but Ainavol could tell they will recover. They were unique than other alternative versions of themselves. They were sturdier, more determined, and could simply take more hits than others would. Even Ainavol, with the extra determination he acquired that warped his mind, was able to stand attacks much longer than most.
But Hardmode couldn't...and he always knew that. When it came down to it Hardmode would always go down first out of the four of them. He was never gifted forbidden knowledge, unlocked the secrets of Karma, or used experimental DT. He was just Sans, Sans the skeleton, or at least one who would "die harder" when it came down to it.
In a way this gave Ainavol more of a reason to keep fighting. Even though Hardmode was always going to lose, he still gave it his all, and truly owned up to his nickname. He was unwilling to fail...and now, neither will Ainavol.
Just a little story to explain why Hardmode saved Ainavol and not himself. I figured I'd write in Ainavol's perspective because I bet, he would have a lot of feelings about being saved by Hardmode. Great theme and I can't wait to see more!
