I'm a 49 year old man and this movie completely freaked me out with the story line, incredible acting, deeply depressing events, and overall "scariness". I walked out of the theater depressed and in awe with what I just witnessed. This movie has been my #1 recommendation to anyone who will listen to my suggestions. Would I recommend watching this? Yes. Would I recommend buying this? Yes. Am I going to buy it? Maybe.....it affected me that much.
People who don't get this movie don't get movies. This movie will become a classic. Its amazing. So well written. I also have the 4k and after a second watch, there's so many hidden bits in the movie as you said. Love it. Great review BTW. Only thing I would have liked is immersive audio. I asked Ari on twitter himself why but he didn't send me a response :(

I have been on the fence about this one since I saw it in theaters.. there was a lot I liked about it but I haven't appreciated it for the masterpiece that you have described, HOWEVER I did go pick it up following your review and it's definitely growing on me. Something about seeing this one in my personal theater, the increase in detail amd shadows were palpable ...yes this is a VERY strong offering in the horror genre...glad I took a second look at hereditary.

This movie was amazing, it's right up there with The Witch and The Babadook as far as great newer slow-burn horror movies that take their time to setup the world, characters, and atmosphere (much like the classic horror movies like The Innocents, Watcher in the Woods, Suspiria, etc).

Fantastic review - the movie is a true masterpiece that was created by a director with a true appreciation for the genre. Whilst entertaining, ultimately the Conjuring movies are made for the mass market - with associated flaws. It's great to see a film that isn't designed to please the masses, or to fill producers wallets. This movie will be talked about in decades to come - it's up there with Suspiria and The Shining in terms of importance. Day one!
im glad you mentioned the forground, and background.. on the 4k from wht ive seen from certain people comparing blu rays to the 4ks of the same movie (any movie), thats one thing i always notice.. u can really pick up the depth perception a lot more on 4k..
I've been wanting to watch this movie since it was in theaters. Can't wait to watch it, but the divisiveness is incredible. I enjoyed The Witch, but everyone else that I know hated it. I expect to feel the same way about this one. A co-worker told me that Hereditary sucked earlier today.

Dude this movie absolutely ruined me. It was so terrifying, so realistic, the pain in this movie had me sobbing for hours once I got home from the theater. It was a crazy experience in the theater and watching the 4k tonight I was able to catch WAY more stuff going on! Unbelievable movie. Thanks for the review. Where did you get that shirt?
Once again another UHD with a incomplete package. It's such a waste of money to spend on an Atmos home theater when many movies either don't use it properly or don't even have it at all. At least the video quality is good. Solid review!
Agreed, an atmos, or at least a 7.1 mix would have added a lot to the movie. I didn't even have anything coming out of my rear channels, that was disappointing. Also dont understand why this one didn't have a 4k di. Still the best horror movie I've seen in a very long time.
When you said "hiding things in plain sight" I was thinking of the poof de fromage. Have you ever watched "The Haunting Hour"? It's geared to kids but it's still very good. Wish I had this show growing up.

Between Heritatary and A Quiet Place at this Next year's Oscars they will easily be nominated for numerous awards seen both of those films twice this year bought Heritatary on Vudu last weekend same with a Quiet Place but overall I Thought that these film's were Really Good but yesterday on Discount Tuesday at my local Regal Theatre I seen this Thriller that was a Top Notch Masterpiece and that was Searching with John Cho what Truely a Great Cinematic Masterpiece you have to Witness in Theatre's before it disappears I Highly recommend it.But 2018 so far has been a Great Year in Films with movies like Incredibles 2,Mission Impossible Fallout in IMAX, Blackkklansman and even Crazy Rich Asains.

Great film, but I live in the u.k and it looks like we're not getting the 4k Blu-ray just the standard Blu-ray when it comes out next month, another overpriced import coming my way, eventually anyway lol
I enjoyed it in the theater, but thinking on it for a while. The movie isn't great. It's rather okay considering that there was one actor that didn't perform as well in the second half as he did in the first half. The movie went spiraling down in the second half when it felt a bit rushed. It became goofy and that was my biggest issue. The director said test screening didn't go well with the audience for the original ending and so they changed it. I just saw all the deleted scenes and I would've liked the movie better if those were added in. So, I am very curious about this 3-hour director's cut the director originally had in store. I hope they release it some day. There is a great movie in there. I hear it's wonderful in 4K, look forward to picking it up when the price goes down or if they release the director's cut.
I personally really enjoyed it. I didn’t feel it became goofy at all but to each their own. Seems to be a very divided movie. I hope we get a longer cut eventually
You should really check out those deleted scenes. They add a whole lot to the characters and it would've benefited the movie imo if they were in the movie. I felt there was development missing from the father and the son. The father didn't really have much screen time at all.

Yeah, it's about 18 minutes of deleted footage. There's another 42 more minutes missing from the movie or so.
3 Hours is way too long, I believe the movie was longer than it needed it to be. Probably my most disappointing movies of the year.
